Carton to Marquette

Not really that close. 4 hours compared to 6 to tOSU. Hardly what I would call "playing close to home".
Driving from Chicago to the Quad cities quite a lot, it's closer to 3 hours than 4. Did you just make up how long you think it would take driving to each from Bettendorf? OSU is over 7 hours. If you cut your drive time in half, it's definitely closer to home.

I wish him well but he was also in “a pretty good situation” at Ohio State. Playing time and style of play shouldn’t be the reasons for transfer. So what is it? He’s a little but not that much closer to home if that was what he was looking for. I don’t necessarily think he will be “THE guy” at Marquette any more than OSU.
Marquette is way closer to home than Columbus.

What school(s) wouldn’t have been a “strange move” in your opinion?

As far as “facilities” Marquette’s are top notch. Few programs anywhere can beat Ohio State. For basketball...?Maybe Kentucky. Maybe. Can’t think of any other.

I realize MU has nice facilities (my sister went there) I’m more talking about the weight room facility if you have pro inspiration. Programs within a couple hour drive would have told me he wanted to be closer to home. A program like like UNI would have made sense if he wanted to be more of “THE” guy. The move to MU leads me to believe he didn’t have the greatest relationship with Holtmann. Just a guess and like I said he most likely he will never really give a reason.

I realize it is half the distance but when a player transfers to be closer to home it’s usually a distance family can reasonably drive to see a game and return home after the game. Milwaukee doesn’t really fit that so to me rules out the “closer to home” reason for transfer.

But neither is really close enough for family to make a turnaround trip to see a weekday game. When I was coaching small college this was what players/families told me when they said “they wanted to play closer to home”. I think this move makes it unlikely that closer to home was a main reason for transfer.

3 hour drive home isn't too bad. It would suck after 8:00 PM games, but Marquette only had 4 of those all of last year, everything else was earlier. 3 hour drive to get to every home game to see your kid play is very feasible. 7 hours would require an overnight stay on almost every game after 3 PM.

“THE GUY” at UNI with AJ Green there?

What about conference road games OSU vs MU? Not to mention drive from Milwaukee in Jan/Feb can be some brutal weather. Yes, Milwaukee closer but again, if closer to home is important I don’t think MU makes much sense to ME.

I hope it works out for both the school and the kid but I kind of will be surprised if it does. He will only be there for a year anyway.
