Carver Ticket - Season Ticket Holders

First time I've really thought about this. So, I was looking at bringing the family in from Chicago last Friday, and when I looked at the Hawkeye ticket office, there were no tickets anywhere close to the court on either side. Only tickets on the end, or way high up, in the last couple rows, for four tickets together. However, when I watched the game, there were 100's of empty side seats when the cameras showed the crowd. I decided not to come obviously, but we are pondering Friday's game again, and I once again see there are no side tickets anywhere close to the court. Last year, several times I went to buy tickets, there was nothing close to the court. My question, for those that know, are these season tickets holders that just don't come to the games? What gives? If that IS the case, and these season ticket holders buy up the tickets, then only show for half the games, is this some of the reason Carver sucks? Is there a way to get season ticket holders, to give over those tickets to those that want to attend, outside of charging them regular prices. Website? I mean, if they aren't going to go anways, who cares if they get any money for their tickets, right?
I realize those that pay for tickets will get upset about giving them away argument, but if you really aren't going to go, just give them to someone who will at least show and make some noise, in order to try to build up the Carver atmosphere again.
With so many comments about our lacking attendance, Iowa finished 23rd in average attendance per game, yet it looks like a morgue during half our games.

It is mind bottling to me why people shell out the $$$ for close to the court club seats,Total cost around 25k per pair) and then don’t show or give the tickets away. Many folks don’t come to basketball games until football is over.

I completely agree. It's not hard to find someone to use the ticket.

I have never been to Carver but the visual on television is the probably worst in the Big10. I was watching the Northwestern game last night and it was quiet and half empty, but at least the place is well lit and looks better on TV. I then turned on the Marquette/Purdue game and the Marquette arena was very rowdy. I know it doesn't matter alot, but the atmosphere at Carver has to be affecting recruiting.

Carver is more than fine when it is full and the students show up. Problem is thee are too many empty seats.

I agree, I've been to a couple games where the atmosphere was awesome, loud as hell. Rewatched the game on TV, and sounded about 1/10th as loud as it was in person. Really weird. I still as just confused as to why people would buy season tickets, then just not go to games. If that's the case, how do we get these people to give away their tickets in order to help the atmosphere?

I agree that CHA can be loud and awesome.

However, having a 15K arena is too much for the times imo. Way too many variables go into getting that place sold out (on top of having a quality product).

Remodel Carver...knock seating down to 12K or so...Barta gets paid a lot of money to figure out such things as getting people there and getting the environment a true home court advantage.

Obviously step one is win. That isn't happening any time soon so he best get creative.

I am one of those season ticket holders with lower row center court tickets...For the non-Big Ten games, prices asked and bid for are so cheap on Stub Hub it isn't worth the effort to sell them if I am not going...So I would recommend one of two things for a potential buyer: 1. Go to StubHub and see how cheaply you can buy any number of great seats or 2. Wait until game starts and move to open seats nearer the court, only risking embarrassment if ticket holder shows up..

Again, I say this as a paying season ticket holder...I would rather someone enjoy my seats than go empty just because someone is afraid of embarassment...

A near capacity CHA rocks but the issue is it’s hard to reach full capacity on a regular basis and it’s an ‘arena’ not a basketball venue.

The best move is to scrap CHA and build a reasonable 10K Fieldhouse with two decks, and decks that extend to the court on all 4 sides. The sight lines can be tight. The students occupy both ends but are up against the court not 50 feet away. What so many lose sight of is the number of seats is a bragging right only. It’s the venues ability to contain noise and make an atmosphere even under less than capacity crowds that counts most to recruits.

I’d find a strategic spot that’s either:

1. On the true campus for easy student access
OR
2. In a location conducive to fun like downtown PED mall area where it can be surrounded by existing bars & restaurants
OR
3. In a growing area with lots of space now with ability to be zoned for entertainment around it like somewhere out by the 80-380 corridor.

Build it and they will come and we will win much more. Problem solved.

Then donate to Ronald McDonald house so your seats are filled.

How much would you be willing to contribute to such a project?

The ADs job is to come with the vision, pitch this idea and then come to all of us to seek funding. There’s nothing to contribute to so how can I say how much? This can be done but there’s too much laziness in our entire athletics.

My point is that at this point in time it might be pretty hard to raise the 200 million it is going to cost.

I took my family to couple games last year, one of them was Jacksonville State I believe. After halftime we went to move up as there 100s of seats in front of us that were empty. After sitting down, one of the staff members confronted our family, and asked that we move back to our seats. I thought it was ridiculous and even said to the lady, nobody is sitting in the seats, can’t we move closer? She was kind, but said people had paid for those seats. Complete garbage in my opinion at that point.

The AD has a lot of Jobs. It sounds like he is doing pretty well selling season tickets now. (not many seats available for sale ) The real problem is getting people to show up and sit in those seats.

It definitely sucks when you look at available tickets online and the closest they have have are corners row 38-40. Then you get there and there are just pockets of open seats mid court 10-20 rows. It’s frustrating for sure.

I understand, people bought season tickets and are free to do with it what they want. The university is happy, because they got their money, so why do they care?

You know Marquette plays in the Milwaukee Bucks arena, right? It was just built and opened last year.

They've had $5 tickets and still get the same results. Free or $5 nobody cares.

They do it so they can have a place to read

They did that prank last year before the games. Some people get there an hour before the game and pass the time reading. I'm seen teachers grading papers. So a salute to this guy who showed up very early for the game. What else yah uninformed bags got to rag about?

DFPE.

Yet somehow Iowa state is able to fill Hilton in the prime seats every single game. Why can't they do it that at Carver?

I mean those 100mm ridiculous endzones pretty much grow themselves after all.

Try checking out StubHub or another service that season ticket holders can sell unused tickets on.

No, I know they are on there. But you can get $5 tickets up top right now for tonights game. So my family of four could just buy them for $30 total. Stubhub, after fees and everything, $71. They aren't selling these, they are just going to sit empty. Which is sad. Wish there was some way we hawkeye fans could work together somewhere, to exchange non-used bball tickets for free, if they are just going to sit empty, especially for these early season games.

I'm a season ticket holder and this has always been a gripe of mine. I think after 5 minutes into the game they should have everyone move down to the open seats. If you can't be there by then, your seat is free for the taking. It looks terrible on tv to see all the open seats, and it's just harder to get cheers going when we're all so spread out (and don't hound me - I AM a vocal fan and have supported our hawks through thick and thin).

We are in the Des Moines are and can't get to all the games. Like tonight - choosing to not drive over for the basketball, back home late and then back for the football game tomorrow. Would love to have an email address for a charity group that would use any tickets we can't. Speaking of which - anyone want two free tickets for tonight's game? Must know the Iowa fight song and be the ones who are going to sit in the seat. GO HAWKS!

You got that right. I totally agree. CHA is a dump which cannot be fixed. Just it's location is a problem for the reasons you give. Build an arena next to Hancher. Or blow up Hillcrest and build it there.
