One of two teens charged with vehicular homicide after a fatal crash in Iowa City in May has now had his case moved to adult, or district, court.
Kesean Ford
Kesean Lee Ford, who turned 18 Wednesday, is charged with homicide by vehicle-excess speed over 25 mph; homicide by vehicle-drag racing; and involuntary manslaughter in relation to the May 27 death of Jennifer Russell, 22, of Waterloo.
According to a criminal complaint, Ford was driving a 2008 Saturn VUE at 10:45 p.m. May 27. He was speeding on E. Court Street in Iowa City next to a white 2012 GMC Acadia being driven by Elijah Seals, 17.
The VUE crashed into a gray 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Russell, at the intersection of E. Court Street and S. Seventh Avenue. The Malibu was then pushed into the Acadia, and Russell was killed in the crash.
The two teens both were charged with homicide by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter in juvenile court in October. Russell’s parents also filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the teens in June.
A judge ruled Tuesday to move Ford’s case to district court at the request of prosecutors. Ford was moved from the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center to the Johnson County Jail. He had his initial appearance Tuesday and was being held on a $30,000 bail.
