Texas cornerback Matt Hankins is headed to Iowa.

Three-star cornerback Matt Hankins has made his college decision. After returning home from his visit to the University of Iowa over the weekend, the 6-foot-1, 160-pound Texas native verbally committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes today.

“I picked them because out of my top four that I visited, I felt most comfortable with Iowa,” said Hankins. “The players and coaches were great and I got along with them all.”

Hankins had previously narrowed his options down to Iowa, Texas Tech, Duke, and Houston among his list of 20 scholarship offers. In Iowa though, he feels he has found a home for college and one that fits him well.

“I like how it's a college town and the fans are amazing,” Hankins said. “What made me comfortable was talking to the players and them telling me the inside scoop. Also, just having some of my boys committing helps too.”

Overall, Hankins is commitment No. 14 for the Hawkeyes in the Class on 2017 and the 4th from the state of Texas as he joins Eno Benjamin, Peyton Mansell, and Gavin Holmes. The Iowa coaches are also still after cornerback Kobe Boyce, who visited with Hankins this past weekend, and wide receiver Camron Buckley, as they try to keep the pipeline going from the Dallas area.

“It's very exciting,” said Hankins. “We all know each other really well and we’re making it a Texas movement.”

In committing to Iowa, Hankins chose the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Texas Tech, Duke, Houston, Colorado, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Southern Miss, SMU, Tulane, Fresno State, Connecticut, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah State, Colorado State, Toledo, Bowling Green, Louisiana-Monroe, UTSA, and North Texas.

As a junior, Hankins finished with 50 tackles, 13 pass deflections, and 2 interceptions at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX.

See highlights from his junior year in the video below.

Boom! Really good pickup. Amazing the kids they are getting out of Texas. Sure helps that Eno was on board first. Kid has been one of the best recruiters for Iowa. They are getting some really good skill guys.

I love this guy's highlight film. 1. Really good coverage skills, 2. *Wants* to hit guys, 3. Made some good reads in the run/screen game, even 4. Fought through blocks to make tackles.

I think he got muscled a couple times and will need to get stronger, and of his hands were better he'd have had close to double digit interceptions, but I think he'll be really good (assuming he stays out of trouble, etc).

The state of Texas has been a goldmine so far for the Hawkeyes! Thank you Matt for keeping the joy ride going and picking the Hawks. You had many choices for your services and you honored the Hawkeye program with your pledge to us. You will enjoy your time in Iowa City.

Awesome! Lovin it! Another 3 star 5.6 recruit on paper according to the critics and non believers from Dbag State etc. "Ho hum" they will vomit incessantly. But these fellas will be Doyalized. Might as well be 5 stars.

See D. King

Great to see the changes in recruiting philosophy going on now. Thank you B. Ferentz (fellow Liitle Hawk). It's exactly what this program had to have.
Go Hawks!

He's got good size at 6-1 but he will need to add a little weight to his frame. Thankfully he should have time to do that. Good get for the Hawks!

Adding good weight is something at which Kirk's football program excels. He could not have made a better choice.

Mabin is 6-2 200, King is 5-11 205, Ojemudia is 6-2 190, and Jackson is 6-1 185. I don't think you want to be any smaller than 180-185 to play in the B1G. Hankins putting on 20-25 pounds without losing a step shouldn't be a problem by the time he is called into action.
