SIAP...with the expiration of the "no new casino moratorium", it sounds like residents in CR will be voting again on a potential casino being built near the downtown!

Mayor Tiff sure sounds like she wants one.

Next question...what kind of stunts will the owner of Riverside Casino do this time to discourage the vote???
Promise another amusement park? Another donation to Dim Kim's campaign to find a loophole?

Stay tuned!

I really wish they would get this passed but some of the investors that put money down before and lost it are not going to keep doing that.

Some guy from CR was bleating that it was unfair for CR to not get a casino, in the Iowa legislature, right before the session ended. 5 people were in attendance, 4 were asleep, and Chuckle's buddy Fat Pat, gaveled it. I get that CR has butthurt due to Riverside. But I don't see what magical revenues it would raise for CR. Riverside, except for some special events, seems like a tomb. The only person making bank is the owner who owns Riverside. I doubt the service workers there are all driving Bugattis.

I forget, why didn't the waterpark or amusement park get built?
I believe it was because they did not take the deal and continued to push forward for a casino. They lost the bid for a casino thus also missed out on the water park or amusement park money that the area casinos were offering to make Cedar Rapids stop pushing for a casino.

Won’t the gaming commission just shut the idea down like it always does?
There are new members on the commission now, I imagine they hope that the new members may view the reports differently. I do believe a Cedar Rapids Casino would steal business from Riverside, Meskwaki, and Waterloo. There is no way around that, it will ultimately come down to if enough new tax revenue will be created by it being approved.

The sad part is where they want to put it. They used taxpayer money to buy the hotel that was there before, then used taxpayer money to demolish the building. Then I bet they give their buddies the casino developers the land for free in exchange for building a new hotel and casino.

I can’t believe anybody thinks Iowa needs more casinos and it helps the local economy at all.

Maybe somebody can open a home medical equipment kiosk in the lobby so people can get their oxygen tanks refilled while they play penny slots.
Selfishly I just don't want to drive to Riverside to play blackjack a couple of times a year. But that's just me.

How about the worlds biggest outdoor playground or something like that?

Incorporate it with a new deluxe minor league stadium.

Anything but another damn casino.

I am anti Zoo because I think it’s extremely cruel to animals.

I rarely walk into a casino but when I have they seem very depressing. It’s just chain smoking losers hoping to turn their life around with a lucky pull.

I really wish they would try this hard to actually bring in an amusement and/or water park. Or heck a zoo or anything for that matter. Cedar Rapids makes zero attempt to bring in any sort of kid/family friendly entertainment.
Lost Island in Waterloo would be tough to beat for a water park and it’s not even an hour away.

Something along those lines would be better than another casino,... I think the casino game is played out everywhere..

Not saying CR should get a casino or not get a casino.....and I agree its not like the employees make more money there than other "normal" jobs, but at least in the small towns of Washington County (which is obviously a way different dynamic than CR and Linn County) the Riverside Casino has given away millions upon millions of dollars over the years to a wide array of organizations and groups (and not just from Washington County either) that have greatly benefited.

Just stating there are indeed some other beneficiaries beyond just the owner of the casino.

That's going to be a boon for Dollar General, Walgreens and payday advance companies.
That and oxygen tank refill companies. I was at the hard rock in sioux city for work a few years back, and seeing all of the old people at the slots in the middle of the day with portable oxygen tanks was about the most depressing shit I've ever seen.

A mini version of the Vegas Sphere would be cool.

Concerts, some education stuff, and advertising could provide additional revenue.

Blackmail casinos to help finance it in exchange for not building a casino.

New gaming commission members, new hands need to be greased.

I think it's been decided that CR isn't getting a casino. The topic will be brought up every 10-15 years and elite and the tribe will have to kick up to ensure it doesn't happen.
