Checking In On the Teachers Union..

Teachers union head: ‘Conservatives don’t even want black children to be able to read’

The Chicago school negotiations will be great to watch.
Somehow despite losing 20% of student population over the last 10 years the # of staff jobs has rose 15%.
Current budget is deficit of $400 million.
With some schools having just a few dozen students (union refuses to allow closures) they demand every school have a librarian and asst librarian, justice coordinator (?), reading specialist, newcomer liaison and other staff positions.
Current demands are 9% increases/yr, additional 15% bump for certified teachers, increase to 30 sick days/yr, housing assistance and free public transportation. FYI - the average teacher salary is already over $100k in Chicago.
Biggest loser coming up - the Chicago homeowner who will see taxes continue to rise. The tax revenue has increased 115% over the last 20 years while average income has risen only 57%.

Winning hearts and minds...

There's a reason that leech locks comments on every one of her social media posts. She's an absolute nut.
She's not wrong
How can you possibly claim she's correct here? Look at the terrible standards of government schools, especially in inner cities, and tell me how you believe forcing kids to attend those failing schools proves they care about their education. I'll wait.

Numerous teachers post on this board.

Quite telling that they remain silent on this subject.
One had the "courage" to say they're not part of the union at least. Still sad that they refuse to weigh in with an opinion in general.. I think we all know why

These ladies look crazy. Too bad conservatives in states where they control everything (ahem, Ioway) won't put the effort in to fix the broader education issues either.
Would you list what you think are the broader issues? All trolling aside, this would be a good topic of conversation.

Off the top of my head and a not even remotely comprehensive list:

School Safety/Behavioral Management
Mental Health Management
Achievement Gap
Faculty Shortages/Quality
Impacts of Poverty/Digital Divide
Standardized Testing/NCLB Weaknesses
Attendance/Student Engagement
Curriculum Standards

The list is a mile long. HORT, like republicans spiking the football and moving on after they think they had some big win with vouchers, is unable to have a serious conversation though so this isn't where I'd look to discuss or solve it.

I think they are, starting with not allowing a failing monopoly to run the entire thing.

My personal opinion is there is a lot wrong with the NEA.

Like police unions and labor unions, they protect people who have no business being in the profession.

And like any political group or movement, there needs to be accountability and evolution to keep up with modern times. If you’re asking me, however, to completely disavow all labor unions or the progress that has been made thanks to them, I will not.
