We are stuck in the mud with elections. Our elected officials only care about the next election vs. long term prospects. It is not a left or right thing. It is the truth.
I don't like China's government. But it sure is more efficient than ours right now.
While I get what you are saying, and you are not wrong when you compare them to the US's current microscopic view and rebirth of an isolationism attitude (thanks trump). But you also have to acknowledge they don't always have a history of expanding and open doors and their future place in the world. Say....the cycles during various emperors, the Boxer Rebellion or in 1949 when the current definition of the Republic of China ended the Open Door policy. Long term planing includes a globalist view point of the country.
I agree with you right now, they are planning generations out and we are not. Over a larger timeline, they aren't the best example with some of their vacillating. And they have a pretty long timeline to critique.
Absolutely have cultural problems in their country. They are also getting to the point that they have too many billionaires and too many in poverty.
I don't think I'm an expert. But from what I have always read, they play the long game.
Let's look at the current outlook:
1. Defunding the NIH
2. Anti-intellectuals want one of the worlds most well known infectious disease doctors who worked for seven presidents, arrested. It's fair to criticize some covid related issues but apparently he's a criminal to some.
3. Republican state legislatures have cut budgets to universities year after year.
4. Republicans want to send public dollars to private schools so some poor kid can't get a good education in public schools.
5. Liberal elites are stupid for going to college. It's a waste of time and money.
6. Anti-science is at the highest peak I've ever seen in my lifetime.
Need I say more about our future prospects for innovation in a country turning into the idiocracy.

Again, I would say, not always. They have been very closed off for decades/generations throughout their history. You are letting current events say the last generation color your view on this. I think that's what @TennNole17 is balking at.
I do agree we seem to be going in very different directions right now. And thats one of the many aspects of trump that scares me. They have some incredible plans right now that put us to shame. I do think the US's "newness" as a country is part of why we react so violently to some of these "small" issues. They know that in 50 years it won't matter.

I think you misunderstand respect and being impressed, with love. It is okay to admit that others are doing some pretty impressive things, esp when we aren't. And to ignore is intentionally being ignorant.
Example. Hoover Dam is a top 20 most impressive engineering feat in the US. China has built 7 that are taller or almost as tall. In the last 20 years. They are not a bunch of bamboo huts that MAGA wants to believe. Are they perfect, HELL NO, but we are chasing in many areas.
It is estimated that China has used more concrete in building in 3 years than the US used in the entire 20th century. Meanwhile, America's infrastructure grades out as a C- . They are progressing in many areas, we are resting on our asses crowing about how good we are.
Anyone with a big picture view of the world should be alarmed and wondering what is our next step?

I saw a map of the amount of high speed rail they have built over the last x recent years and it is astounding and ridiculously impressive. As I saw in another post, don’t confuse this with respect for the govt but to ignore the accomplishments and infrastructure advancements they are making right now will be our downfall. This needs to be our wake up call.

Right now we are doing very little with the innovations we do make it there isn’t an almost immediate transactional financial benefit that includes massive CEO etc bonuses.
It's all about power and money. They no longer care about doing anything important.
Just have to run over your own people with tanks and they fall in line.
