Watched a few games from 2015 over the past week, a few things stood out:

1. Our O Line sucked pass blocking for much of the year. I quit counting how many times CJ ended up on his back in the B1G championship. In the Maryland game we were clearly managing CJB's workload which is why our offense kind of stunk that game. If we see significant improvement there, this offense could explode.

2. There were a lot of running opportunities Beathard couldn't take advantage of due to the hip last year. One of which may have cost us 4 pts in the B1G Championship.

3. Beathard has first round QB talent. But you know that already....

I am still concerned about our O-line. Losing Blythe hurts with this group of young guys. I am hoping our 1st round draftable tackle emerges this season.

With the more experienced tackles, our pass blocking will likely improve this year. But losing Blythe/Walsh will likely cause or run blocking to slip a little.

1) I do agree our pass pro at times needed improvement. However, CJB also held on to the ball far too long on many of those sacks (he even alluded to that in several interviews this offseason on something he was working on-getting the ball out on time) Also keep in mind CJB's mobility was extremely limited for 80% of the season where he was not able to step up or roll out in the pocket. This also led to about 1/2 the pass plays to be scrapped because he was not able to boot, roll out, or sprint out...which is/was a significant part of our offense with P/A passes

Your OL is only as good as it's weakest link. The weakest links from last year are the same guys, but a year older. I would expect the line to be better this year than last.

I think they'll be significantly better due to experience, and another year of KF coaching those tackles. Losing Blythe and Walsh hurts but happens annually.

That 2.6 stat about CJ is unreal. He's Drew Tate with an NFL frame.

Honestly if our line sucked then any change over last year is a good thing. No your right Blythe was good but hope we are now collectively better.

CJB has way better velocity on his ball, but yes, the resemblance is there. Drew was a master improvisor. CJ and Stanzi have no doubt seen this on tape and incorporated it into their games. Tate has expressed desire to come coach for the Hawks when he's done in the CFL. Hope Kirk/Brian are down for that. It's time to install a proper QB coach.

I wouldn' say that Drew's improvision ability had any influence on CJ. That's an instinct you either have or don't. CJ has it. That is one attribute that sets a great QB apart from a good QB. Stanzi was good, CJ has the ability to be great.

You're right, it probably hasn't had an effect as CJ was unaware of Iowa's history prior to coming here, but it definitely helps all parties involved that Tate put in down on tape within the framework of the Iowa philosophy, if that makes sense. More importantly, KF/GD/BF has seen what extending plays can do for this team and feels comfortable giving CJB the green light to do his thing.

Tate was the most polished day 1 QB in Ferentz's tenure. He is one of the top 3 QB's in the Texas HS records. The only reason we got him was the coaching change at A&M and that he would sit behind Reggie McNeal. No Hawk QB did more with less than Tate his JR year.

If hopefully our O-line solidifies and our WR have breakout years. CJ needs a DJK type receiver (without the mental meltdown).
