CJB

Thanks for sharing, enjoyed this little tidbit. :D

“I was really hoping he’d go to where coach Ferentz was,” Bobby said. “When he got back he said, ‘Hey, Grampa?’ I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘Oh man, the hottest girl escorted me, took me around campus. If I commit, I think I have a date. So I called coach Ferentz and said, ‘That’s illegal recruiting!’”

"“I was really hoping he’d go to where coach Ferentz was,” Bobby said." "Bobby Beathard had once tried to hire Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz as his offensive line coach with the Chargers. So Bobby made a phone call to Ferentz, which led to C.J. taking a trip to Iowa City before signing day." Say what you will about Coach Ferentz, but the guy is greatly respected in the NFL.

And, if you really think about it, it tells you how little stars mean in recruiting. KF wants a certain type of person, not just an athlete which we all know.

I am a bit surprised more kids aren't calling him to come to Iowa, funny as that sounds. Just think about this: We complain about our QB's from time to time. Think about Drew Tate's Canadian career, Stanzi's been hanging around, Rudock was close with the NFL and started for Michigan, and CJB gets drafted round 3.

Now lets talk about the professional careers of Nick & Urban's QBs. Chris Leak, Tim T, etc...

I like being an Iowa fan. I like it a lot.

And I think close on Rudock is underselling it. I know his year at Michigan is what put him there but he is the backup in Detroit

this is CJ kiddin around, no?.... there's gotta be more to this story

Very interesting was Shanahan's comments about not "watching the rush". That is CJ both good and bad. "Feeling" the rush might be a different thing. Something to ponder.
It's interesting to consider how differently CJ responded to the rush from '15 to '16. Many scouts have claimed that CJ doesn't seem to feel the rush very well. But I don't think that they were accounting for the fact that his bum knee made it really hard to move away from the rush. During '15, he may have been in pain - but he didn't have to worry about exacerbating a knee injury to a point where it becomes a season ender. Thus, even through pain, he moved away from the rush far better in '15 ... and that was with both seasons where our pass-pro left something to be desired (presumably due to injuries and the resulting juggling of personnel).

There were several times when CJ waited too long in the pocket in '16 ... but that was attributable to him waiting for a WR to break open and/or be where he was supposed to be ... and those occasions usually led to sacks. I have a hard time faulting him for taking those risks ... because our O desperately needed the opposing D to worry more about our vertical passing game. Sadly, we never were able to elicit that response.

His entire career and abilities put him in the NFL, not just his year at Michigan.

Look at his adjusted YPA. It progressed like pretty much any other player during his career, from 6.2 to 7.3 to 7.7. He didn't make some huge leap at Michigan, he grew as a player from a Junior to a Senior.

The Iowa coaching staff deserves at least as much credit as Michigan's.

Plus his receivers were at least twice as impressive as Iowas.
