Coaching Mistake

Coming out of a timeout with 3:13 left in the game with Iowa up four and Fran has Jok on the bench for Uhl. Ohio St comes down and makes a three to cut the lead to one and with three timeouts left Fran doesn't call one so he can get Jok back into the game. I just can't figure out why he wouldn't want to get Jok back into the game since it is the biggest offensive possession of the game for Iowa. After Gesell tries to bail Iowa out of a horrible possession with a missed (contested) layup Fran signals for Jok to get up and check in. Of course Ohio St goes down and nails a long jump shot to take a one point lead and that was the game. This is what Fran should have been so pissed about at the press conference.

No doubt the team cannot finish games, but Fran's coaching under 5 minutes ia highly suspect. Good call on not getting Jok back in. When has Gesell driving down the lane for a last second shot worked? We just can't get guys open while defensively we lose Loving or (insert name of hot shooter). At times it looks like our opponent has 7 defenders they way they smother Uthoff and Jok.

Frans never been a good in game coach. Good at developing players, real average at recruiting and game coaching

To be honest it looked like Gessell was the only one who wanted to shoot that possession. Utoff caught the ball at the 3pt line and just passed it right back. You could of set up a number of plays, Utoff was not taking a shot, he was scared for some reason. He has faded away and he can forget about POY and any shot at being drafted. His stock is falling like a sinking stone. His play has regressed and his defense has become horrible. He is jumping on pump fakes and he is not boxing out.

We're now 11-25 in games decided by 6 points or less in the past 4 years. I'd say it's time for Fran to change up his late game strategy

NCAA rule question...

When Wagner went down hard and was unable to shoot his free throws, why was it that Uhl went to the line to shoot for him? Dom is shooting 58% from the line this year (9th on the team). Did OSU get to decide who shot the free throws?

Great question, but my guess is that Fran was allowed for any sub to shoot the FT's and he chose Dom.

Agree 100%, Fran wants the flow of game to continue by not calling timeout but when we stand and dribble ball for 30 seconds that is not a flow. Call a timeout and set up something productive.

Jok's sick and been sick. Said so in the paper, said his shot is flat. Fran also said he's gassed at the end of games.

for the life of me, I could not understand why, playing a team with little inside depth and 4 fouls across the board and in the bonus, we settled for dribbling the ball from the perimeter and did not set JU on the block and get him the damn ball. Many possessions JU is standing at the 3 point line and being fairly inactive. I would think any 12-13 year old AAU team could figure out the plan would be to attack the paint, get them to foul out or give a fairly lightly contested look from the block. Head scratching.

We have about 100 banked timeouts to use the final 2 games now!

Well, I will also raise a coaching question. At the end of the 1st half, there was a dead ball, and the Hawks got the final possession with no shot clock. Jok and Gessell both on the bench with 2 fouls. Why not put them in for that final offensive possession. Very little chance of a 3rd foul, but much more firepower.

I did google news search and this is the 1st article...
http://www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/late-clock-woes-plague-hawkeyes-20160228

"“My shot has been short all day,” Jok said. “I’m still not feeling well. I didn’t want to force anything because I knew I was going to be short. So I was just trying to pass it along so somebody else can make a play. That was a big turnaround. We needed to get a shot off there.”

What is Fran suppose to do if Jok isn't able to get it/take the shot?

With a whole 1 day for him to rest and kick whatever he has(flu season...?)....Tuesday isn't looking very promising.

Yes, Frans refusal to use his timeouts in key situations makes zero sense with the amount of experience he has, I do not get it.

Even if Jok is tired or sick, he is still the best option right now. Call the timeout, it takes at least 3 minutes for that to run its course which was probably less actual time than what transpired. You at least force the defense to play with a little honesty with Jok. Was listening on the radio and even Dolph was having trouble explaining how much difficulty the team was having to get any offense going. It seems like this team is having to think about every piece of the game and not playing on instinct and abilities. Probably at the "paralysis by analysis" point with the way things are going

It is not just Fran's experience sitting over there on the bench as dead weight pretending to be a coach. Doesn't Speraw have something like 17 years head coaching in D1 and one of the other guys has been a head coach. You would think someone could see this issue. It is really looking like Fran is a very stubborn guy and is a "my way or the highway approach". Well folks, the highway is the better option right now because his way does not work within games or over a 30 game season.

Yeah, I'm seeing the same thing. They seem to be overthinking everything.

Not sure if this is what is going on, but sometimes when guys are looking over their shoulder expecting to get pulled or yelled at when they make a mistake they play tentative or scared. Knew a hall of fame high school football coach in Iowa who coached basketball and had this problem. Kids can get pissed at you or fired up in football and take it out on the guy across from you, but this doesn't work in basketball. He would have kids afraid to shoot and so scared of making a mistake that they couldn't just relax and let the game come to them. Again I am not sure what is going on but players look tentative and leave it up to Gesell to make a play. The same thing happened with Marble at the end of games or shot clock running out and remember how he struggled with last second shots. Of course Marble wanted the ball and wasn't looking for others often.

I agree with the response to coaching thought. However, comparing this to team with Marble is quite right as Marble was the only option on that team. This team has at least 2.

+100000, wth was that. I don't often get on Fran, but we were losing that TO at the end of the half regardless. Call a TO to just talk about anything at that point. It was idiotic to not call a TO there, I'm not sure what he's expecting the players to do in those instances.

Good question. Sometimes I think Fran plays it to conservative by the book and he does not trust his players enough.

Did the same thing at the end of the half against Wisconsin. Iowa had the rebound secured with about 30 seconds. Both Uthoff and Jok on the bench. Never called a timeout to get either in the game.

Don't know if that has any bearing on what's going on with Iowa but my boys baseball coach and basketball coach this past year was the same guy. Strikeout and you may get the bench, make an error and you may be on the bench, have a stupid foul or miss a few shots and you may be on the bench. After this basketball season my son told my wife that it was sad that one coach could make him hate the 2 sports that he's loved his entire life. He couldn't wait for the season to get over with and I'm not sure he'll play either next year, which is heart breaking to me.

The more mad Fred gets the worse the guys play. He was relaxed early in the year now he is yelling and swearing no one wants to make a mistake so they don't take the shot or they are tight when they do.

Yep, stop ripping on things you have no clue what you are talking about.
You know what, I'm frustrated. Just because my assumption, to which I said I wasn't sure about, was incorrect, does not mean I will refrain from "ripping" things that haven't lived up to expectations over the past half dozen games. How about you stop telling people what they can and can not post.

I'm pissed too, carry on.
