Good News Bad News

If TJ Otzelberger is that great of a coach, why did he leave UNLV with a losing record? Could it be that falling into the NIL jackpot that is available at ISU made him a better coach? Just askin' for a friend.
Tj, unlike fran, did change his defense considerably. He preaches it and expects it. If you don't do it, you don't play. Omaha would still be playing significant minutes for fran because of his lack of high expectations on defense.

Much like moneyball there are players to be had that can play at a high level, when coached correctly.

He chose the right athletes to play it.
He gets credit for that.

Roster construction is a recurring issue for Fran.
All O, no D. Too many lanky, not very athletic players.
P Sandfort would be a great complimentary player as a spot up shooter playing strategic minutes surrounded by good athletes who can defend and cover for him on that end.

You can have 1 Sandfort on a team and be really successful.

But you can’t build a whole team out of Sandforts and be really successful

Yup. That's the point.
Haven't heard the term positionless basketball in a while, which is good because it's mostly nonsense.
Having a roster full of great shooters who also have superior athletic ability for their position is the ideal. And will almost surely never happen at Iowa.
For every good shooter, poor athlete there needs to be a counterbalance of great athlete and defender who scores off O rebounds and garbage buckets.
Traore, who is a good quality player but hardly unique on the college bball landscape, looks like an athletic freak compared to most of his teammates.

I'll help you. He was only there 2 years. They came in second place with a 12-6 record in their conference the first year he was there. The second year he was in rebuilding mode with 6 freshmen and 2 sophomores on the roster.

In his last 2 years of a 3 year stint with S Dakota St he went 52-16 and finished in first place in the Summit both years. They made the NCAA tourney 2 of 3 years he was there.
Don't forget that includes beating Iowa with the Jack Rabbits.

He values skill but often at the expense of athleticism, toughness and strength

Speaking of Omaha Biliew, I looked at his stats at Wake and it's 5.3 PPG and 2.3 RPG in 13.7 mpg in 3 games. No one mentioned Xavier Foster, but he's tearing up with 2 PPG at Radford in 3 games. I remember thinking losing both was going to sting...

I think McCaffery has been a lot more reserved this season. I rarely see any outbursts from him, but then of course, those are OK when it's Underwood or Izzo. His relatively calm demeanor this season indicates to me that this is going to be his last season as the Iowa HC.
🤞🏻🤞🏻

Fran looks at that and thinks 15 ppg and 7 rpg if I play him the whole time.

It is kind of interesting that PMAC is el Fuego from 3pt line at Butler. At Butler he is primarily being used as a 3pt shooting specialist on kick outs. . Of course, PMAC a career 33% 3pt shooter is lighting it up from 3pt line while we see our own Payton Sandfort is heaving off balance Bricks. PMAC having his best year away from his Father.

So yeah, there is a role for a 3pt specialist that doesn't defend or rebound very well, but the other four guys better be plus Rebounders/Defenders.

That said, Despite getting an ex-Iowa starter, Butler is only 7-5.

Does Pella even have a stop light?
You apparently have never been there? Is has a very nice downtown area. Also, Pella is near Lake Red Rock which has a very nice bike trail. I don’t live there, but it’s also home to Central College…if you want to watch some D3 sporting events.

If you had been to either, the answer would be obvious. Winter weather slightly better in Pella, plus Pella is much closer to Des Moines metro than is Ames.
I've been to both towns. You're splitting hairs about the weather. It's exactly the same.

Pella has nothing to offer in terms of restaurants, entertainment, sports, etc. D3 sports are a joke. I went BV, which is a D3 school in Storm Lake. Those D3 "collages" are glorified high schools. In fact, there were more kids in my HS than at BV.

If you've been in both towns you'd know any comparison is not a good one outside each having a d3 school.

Hey, I’m also a fellow BVer, so I know all about Storm Lake and D3 sports. 😉. I’m just saying, if I lived in a smaller town, I would prefer one with a college as it offers more opportunities for things to attend…sports, plays, concerts, etc vs a town with no college. Regarding weather patterns in Iowa…it may be “splitting hairs” but there is some difference in weather (gets slightly warmer/less snow) from Highway 20…to Highway 30…to Interstate 80. I recall several times last couple winters where Ames had more snow/ice vs Des Moines area.

I was comparing Pella to Ames (which was the earlier/original comparison), b4 another poster brought up Storm Lake. Anyway, by most measures Pella is a superior town vs Ames. It’s cleaner, closer to Des Moines metro, better weather (albeit slightly), great bakeries/meat markets/restaurants, and near a nice lake/bike trails/recreational area. And best of all, not as many iswho fans! 😜

We have good places to eat. If the Hickory place or whatever you call it is the best restaurant you have then that’s laughable. It sucks compared to other Smoked BBQ places that I have eaten at.

I think it's a sign of lack of passion.

As for izzo and underwood... please.... their kids play with a toughness ours do not. Their demeanor translates, therefore it's a bit more authentic. Frans has never translated to his teams.
They ARE NOT the same thing.
I was simply talking about those coaches and the way they are much more caustic in their demeanor with the refs than McCaffery is, but he gets the reputation for being a hot head and they others are just coaching their team hard.

Hell of a lot smaller too, homeslice. It's actually an apples to tacos comparison. Makes no sense really. Just funny to me that someone living in Pella would thumb their nose at Ames. It's actually pretty f ckin hilarious.
It is pretty hilarious that a shithole city like Ames can’t stack up to a small city like Pella. Maybe you grew up there and still like it. And I don’t care. Shitty people live in shithole cities.
