What coaches has Iowa produced that have been successful at the college and NFL level? Which school in the state has turned out the most successful former assistants?

What is considered successful for this request? Time frame?
Had success at college or professional level as a head coach. Time frame can be our lifetimes. I was born in 62'. BTW, I believe that Iowa turned out the best of the bunch in one Bill Snyder.

Is McCarney considered successful in regards to your request? Or does it need to be Stoops level? Does Iowa get credit for Alvarez?

Hawks get credit for both. Mac took over a program that had very little admin support and had bottomed out when he was hired. The talent level was D1AA outside of a few players(e.g. Troy Davis).

You are 56? They way you post I’d would have guessed you were a teenager or college student at worst. Wow this is even more sad and pathetic to think a man in his 50s goes to a rival teams board and post the garbage you have done under multiple user names.

He's probably done a lot of drugs. They say you don't develop emotionally while addicted to them. He probably started young.

The success is at different levels for the coaches. More Iowa coaches have had success at the Collegiate level, but the ISU coaches' success reached greater heights. Like I posted before, Bill Snyder is at the top of the heap for both schools. The success he has had at KSU is unmatched by anyone considering how bad that program had been prior to his arrival.

Interesting, who are you putting in the 'greater heights' category?

Jimmy Johnson & Pete Carroll & Mack Brown

I have heard them mention their time at ISU as a driving force in their career often. The national media brings it up frequently as well. Good call. 6 years at ISU between the 3 of them. Maybe Iowa should claim the Harbaughs, their Dad was at Iowa so their tree branched off from there.

Very impressive! So Iowa with Lou Holtz(national champion) bob stoops (national champion) Dennis green(super bowl champion) and I’m sure I’m missing some aswell
Lou Holtz coached at Iowa before I was born and Green never won a SB as head coach. I do believe John Fox made it to the SB as a head coach...twice

Whatever helps you to sleep.

Interesting list however I do see one glaring omission. Frank Broyles had Hayden Fry, Lou Holtz, and Jimmy Johnson on his staff at Arkansas and maybe a couple of others. Also as much as it pains me Woody Hayes' coaching tree also deserves mention. I think as far pro football goes Bill Walsh and Bill Parcells have mentored several successful coaches.

Jim Caldwell and Tom Moore who was arguably the mastermind behind Peyton while he was in Indianapolis

the thread is concerning assistants at Iowa/ISU that went on to have success as head coaches at various levels

Sorry I was responding to info that was in the link that was provided in this thread and felt that Frank Broyles deserved to be mentioned since he did in fact mentor Hayden Fry.

This is beyond laughable. Johnson, Carroll and Brown were at ISU for a combined total of six seasons. The bottom line is that ISU was a stepping stone job for all of them. Compare that to the coaches under Hayden's tree:

Barry Alvarez spent eight years at Iowa.
Bill Snyder spent ten years at Iowa.
Bob Stoops spent five years at Iowa.

And each of them attribute a great deal of their success to the mentoring they received under Hayden Fry while at Iowa. As well as working with all-time great coaching staffs. Listen to their interviews. Read their articles. The fact that you're trying to cast ISU as having a coaching legacy is homerism at its absolute worst.

I get that it bothers you. 3 SBs and 3 Nattys is a pretty nice accomplishment for three guys. Stoops won one so no need to get too bent out of shape. BTW, whether you are sharp enough to understand or not, ambitious young assistants don't hang in one place too long.

They owe it all to good old ISU. The reunion in Ames was beautiful when they all came back. What a tribute.

Does Iowa get to claim Howard Jones and his 5 Nattys? Seifert with his 2 SB's? Do we throw Coe in as well with Levy?

Your ignorance is bothersome, yes. Bottom line: ISU didn’t shape any of the coaches that you want to attach yourself to. If so, let’s see some quotes and interviews about it. Because I can provide tons on the Iowa side. Cradle of Coaches. Iowa City. Choke on it, troll.

Best coaching tree in the state? Iowa, and is not even close. The Hawkeyes having arguably the greatest college coaching staff of all-time ends the discussion, no need to drive in any further.

No what bothers me is the fact that you are not smart enough to know that your own team also employed Johnny Majors(NC at Tenn.) and Jackie Sherrill who was an assistant under Majors ( until he got caught screwing underage girls) also won a National Title at Pitt. Maybe you should do a little research before your next trolling session pinhead.

Does ISU claim Chizik on the coaching tree? His time in Ames deeply influenced his winning a national title at Auburn. Namely that he needed to leave as fast as he could. But he did get a commemorative coin.

Another one who doesn't like the facts presented. Without looking, I am venturing a guess that you are banging on the kid who is transfering to the South Dakota school for his senior year. You definately fit the stereotype that many opposing fan bases label a portion of the hawk fan base. You go boy!

Odd extrapolation on that one. Keep taking your shots at people and programs. It is a pretty accurate reflection.

George Seifert coached at Iowa in 1966. Using your dumbass logic, that's two more Super Bowl rings for Iowa! WOOOO!

Going back to 1895, Iowa State has won 7 or more games 17 times. In 120 friggin’ seasons. Oh, coaches learned plenty at ISU over the years. ... like new and creative ways to lose. And how to get the hell out or Dodge ASAP. Probably the most pathetic legacy in the Power 5.
