Coffey stays in draft

B1G looking weak right now after looking really strong potentially a couple months ago. Minnesota was a sleeper team.

Not a lot of top quality after Michigan St. Could be a year where only 5-6 B1G teams make the dance. Maryland and Ohio St should be solid. Michigan has a lot of talent but also a lot of ?'s. Wisconsin and Purdue have to replace do everything studs. Indiana is Indiana. Iowa loses Cook, Moss and Baer. Minnesota lost top score and some quality players but did add some nice transfers and still has two of the best So's in the conference. Illinois and Rutgers will be improved but not top 40 improved. Northwestern, Nebraska and Penn St will be battling for last place.

and now Rutgers loses a big part of the team

Agree, but if Bohannon can get healthy for this season, that could be an advantage for Iowa if they are able to take advantage and beat up on the bottom half of the league.

Coffey was not rated at all near the top 60 in one review of draft eligible players I saw.
He may be another of the many players who have received bad advice and/or are not exercising good judgment.

It's completely the opposite of my thinking, but I suspect that for many of these players they put little value in actually obtaining their degree. Or at least they don't value it anywhere near what I think it's worth.

I don't keep up with incoming recruiting classes, but the B1G is not going to be tough top to bottom, like last year. Minny and Rutgers both looked like they could make big steps forward, but guys leaving early will hurt them. I think Illannoy is probably the most likely to show the biggest improvement, which sucks. I have a hard time predicting where the Hawks will finish. They have some proven players, but need JoeT, CJF, and Nunge to be at least solid contributors. I think Pemsl and PMac are less likely major contributors, but we will be thin at 3 and 4 without some minutes from them. The grad transfer would at least give us some depth at guard, which will be critical if JBo can't make it back 100%.

College athletics will never be the same ... I would not want to be a coach/recruiter ... I think gone are the days you will see a guy remain at your program for four years ... If he's not playing enough - he'll hit the portal ... If he averages decent numbers - someone will tell him he's NBA material ...

I'm surprised at all of these guys who leave early ... There are so many talented basketball players in the NBA + G League, and overseas. To make it in the NBA you really have to be something pretty special ...

With the new NCAA rules, they can come back to the school they left and complete their degree for free.

Then there is no risk to declaring for the draft. If you're lucky and get picked, great. If you don't then just go back to school. I must be missing something.

If I'm reading this right, a player can sign with an agent and still return to school if undrafted. The player has to terminate all relationships with an agent. If he is drafted, he immediately loses eligibility.

NCAA story
So then there is essentially zero risk. Why wouldn't every player just stay in the draft and see what happens?
There must be something missing as this makes no sense. Then again it's the NCAA so it doesn't need to make sense, it just needs to make money.

Here's the key part ...

College basketball players who request an Undergraduate Advisory Committee evaluation, participate in the NBA combine and aren’t drafted can return to school as long as they notify their athletics director of their intent by 5 p.m. the Monday after the draft.

So if you're one of the lucky ones invited to the combine you get to roll the dice risk free.

Doesn't seem fair or make logical sense, but the NCAA and NBA must think it's in their financial interest. Those two organizations don't typically do things that negatively affect their financial bottom line if they can get away with it.

Hoping he is right. Illinois was really young last year against the second toughest schedule.

Ayo, Giorgi, Frazier, Feliz. Add in top 40 big Kofi Cockburn. Need a jump from Jones and Griffin.

I’m in wait and see mode.

This is really on point. Just like everything else in society, there is no "happy medium". They either have to be getting 32+ minutes per game or they're unhappy--never mind if someone is ahead of/better than them. I get that everyone needs to do what's best for themselves, but it's getting to the point where why don't we just put everyone's names back on the Open list and coaches have to re-recruit their entire team every year.

I agree. If participating in the combine is a precondition to returning to school, that doesn't make sense. I guess there is also the risk that you thought you would get drafted in the first round, but only got drafted in the second, which doesn't mean you will necessarily make it on the roster. You would not have the option to say, never mind, I want to go back to school.

If you are a player that has an outside shot at playing in the NBA, it really seldom helps your chances to stay all four years in college. You no longer have the "potential card" to play, whereas 18-19 year old kids still are likely to improve...

It really has messed up my thoughts on college athletics and "student athletes", but I think those days are disappearing.

Yeah I actually think they have a shot at top 6 in the B1G. Ayo has the most ability IMHO out of any of the soon to be SO's in the conference to take that next step to be a top 10 player in the B1G. If he puts it all together and the other guys take nice steps forward Illinois could be really tough. I thought Illinois and Minnesota could be the sleepers this upcoming season. Minnesota could still be. I really like the transfers they brought in and Oturu and Kalschuer could have breakout years.

I have heard from several people that Coffee didn't want to return to Minnesota at all. Even if he didn't stay in the draft. Heard his dad (Who was all over his original recruitment) Was not a fan of Patino. Not sure why.
