Common opponent......UConn

Watched some highlights on YouTube... unfortunately they can shoot the three. #34 Cumberland is their stud......6’ 5” wing guard. They have a quick point who is the top 3 point percentage shooter in their league.

Looking at their season they held a lot of opponents to the 60's. Only losses were to teams I would say are considerably more athletic than Iowa. And as you pointed out Cumberland appears to be a player. Throw Moss and Dailey and their 10 fouls at this guy and harass the hell out of him. Give another PG the treatment teams give Bohannon and make the refs call 10 fouls while hand checking / grabbing the whole game. Do something different than let opposing guards carve the D up. Iowa cannot get into an up and down with this team. Work the clock, make them defend and grind out possessions getting post guys multiple touches.

I don’t see that. Rutgers has a lot of big front court depth. That’s what gave Iowa fits.

Omoruyi
Doorson
Carter
Thiam
Johnson

I think your comments are legit....I think Rutgers front line might very well be better than Cincy's but I think Cincy's guards are more potent offensively than Rutgers by quite a bit. I think the primary comparison between those two teams is the defense they play and the athleticism....all that said, we probably can't compare them exactly to anyone in the B10. Maybe Ohio St without the big Wesson?

The benefit for Iowa is that our weakest links on defense are Bohannon and Garza. Cincinnati doesn't have great center and point guard play to exploit that. Their strength is in the wings offensively. I think that Weiskamp and Baer can do a reasonable job on Cumberland.

Offensively we need the Tyler Cook that showed up during the Big 10 Tournament. I personally don't care if he has 3-4 turnovers; I just want to see him attack the basket and draw fouls. Look at the games we lost down the stretch; Cook had 0 free throw attempts against Ohio State, Maryland and Wisconsin.

If Garza and Cook can get points in the paint early then it should open up good looks for 3. I think when we struggled down the stretch it was largely due to passive front court play. Garza seemed content to catch the ball 15 feet from the basket and settle for long jump shots rather than catch in the paint and work his post moves.

Cincinnati isn’t comparable on defense to any B1G team. To my knowledge the only time we’ve played against a matchup zone this year was versus Oregon.

A post isolation offense with little ball movement will get us annihilated. Move the ball, get the middle man to move out to the wing, then post feed.

Iowa has a record of 5 wins and 8 losses to teams
in the NCAA that we have played this season.
Our wins are Oregon, Connecticut, Iowa State,
Michigan and Ohio State. Hawkeyes have a good
chance to upset Cincy with a hot shooting day from
3 point land.

Did UConn make the tourney? Also, you forgot Minnesota.

I kind of like the matchup. I’d be much more worried about a team that could really score.

Smaller guards will certainly benefit our 3 point shooting

One primary scorer at the wing position. Can play Joe on him and then switch to zone when he needs a breather.

A very poor 3 point shooting team, with their second leading scorer shooting below 30%

While they are a talented defensive squad, we have shown flashes of brilliant offense.

They remind me of ohio state. A little inept on offense but very sound defensively, with bodies to defend the post. I think OSU has more options off the bench with Washington and Ahrens then Cincy

I don’t know, I think we win this game around 60% of time. The game being playing in Columbus is crap. I would be livid if I was Tennessee. Safe to say the volunteers will be rooting hard for the Hawkeyes.

I’ll have the Hawkeyes in the round of 32. We have played a much tougher conference schedule against very fundamental teams.

After watching the replay against Houston last night in the championship game of the AAC, it surprised me how slow they play on offense. Many times they walked the ball up the court after a rebound or a made basket. A few times I thought there would be a 10 second count believe it or not. If they play to their standards of defense and we aren't hitting shots, then it may be a grind of a game. Cumberland got to the FT line several times as well. I'm not sure if we can speed them up. Houston looked frustrated most of the game.

I wonder if our press would make them play uncomfortably, or if they would beat it badly?

I am fully convinced any Top 60 team can beat any other team in a one and done game situation.
KU had a very poor shooting night against ISU. IMO KU wins that match up 8 out of 10 times, maybe 9.
Parody in D1 mens BB is unbelieveable.[/QUOTE]

Parity, not parody, is the word you want to utilize here.

Well, first of all I'd like to say that watching that game last night was one of the most displeasurable experiences to date lol. It was the classic turtle vs hare game. Cincy being of course the loathsome turtle. I haven't watched Houston this year but I'd bet that their an up-tempo team. You could sort of tell by the look on their kissers. We can try to press and speed them up, but there were times they sped up also, but for a brief but agonizing moment for Houston. They have a 6'11 center who looked really thin, but not very athletic. I'll bet Ryan could have some fun in the post if he can slide in there along with Garza. Cook should get several FTs if he can drive to the basket. Their zone is a killah. They also have a lefty guard who knocked down some jumpers. Gotta watch him. Well, those are a few of the things I saw when I was awake during the game lol.

Cook has the quickness and leaping ability to play with just about anyone. But he doesn't seem to exploit his athleticism nearly as much as he could, especially rebounding and on defense. He was impressive against Illinois, but other than that, especially the last month or so, he hasn't seemed to play with a lot of energy or enthusiasm, and that makes his ample physical skills moot.

I would enjoy seeing Iowa come out and play physical defense like MSU, Wisconsin, Duke, and--I hear--Cincy. I'm tired of seeing Iowa's opponents push them around and get away with it. I really don't understand how Iowa's players put up with it. This is where Cordell Pemsl could be such a help. Remember what he did for the Hawkeyes vs. ISU?

Cook and Co. need to come out with their hair on fire and establish a physical presence, oh, from warm-ups until the last second ticks off the clock. Or they can stay in their shells and get pushed around again. But I hope they're finally tired of being bullied.

Pemsl doesn't take crap from anyone, Connor is the next most fiery guy. Need more of this for sure

I’d lean towards them having success against it. But, it could work if we “slow play” them. I expect we will run every style of defense against them but primarily the 2-3. The 2-3 is very effective against wing slashers. I think if this game ends up in 70’s, we win. 60’s, we lose.
