Total Offense
Minn 102
Iowa 57

Passing
Minn 74
Iowa 89

Rushing
Minn 106
Iowa 31

Defense
Minn 24
Iowa 12

Punting
Minn 11
Iowa 80

Kicking
Minn 21
Iowa 70

Return
Minn 84
Iowa 114

So based on this Iowa has a good edge offensively with their balance. But Minnesota wind special teams.

Some of those Special Teams numbers surprise me. I think Iowa's special teams have been real solid for the most part. There have been a couple of big plays that have certainly hurt Iowa as far as this ranking (the Lively TD against Maryland for example), but I don't think the disparity is anywhere near what these rankings suggest.

And King hasn't been returning many punts lately. He hasn't had to. Iowa has led for most of the year, and we all know Kirk isn't going to let King or anyone else run wild with a 2nd half lead. Iowa's Special Teams are just fine. This area doesn't concern me in the least against the Furry Rodents.

Honestly, if Iowa holds on to the ball, and plays the way they are capable, they should win this game handily. Sometimes it doesn't work out that way, but on paper we're a rock solid favorite.

I know game comparison doesn't mean squat, and each game is whole "nother" deal in and of itself, but I like to ponder this one ............

Minny @ NW = NW 27 Minny 0

Iowa @ NW = Iowa in a bloodbath

Lets hope it turns out like that.

Total Offense
Minn 102
Iowa 57

Passing
Minn 74
Iowa 89

Rushing
Minn 106............and yet they're a running team?
Iowa 31

Defense
Minn 24..............irritating is the best way to describe Minnesota's defense. Aside from the Nebraska game, which is basically Armstrong throwing jump balls (see our game last year), they usually don't give up a lot of big plays.
Iowa 12

Punting
Minn 11
Iowa 80....................okay? If we're talking 80th in yds punting or averages like that.....don't care.

Kicking
Minn 21
Iowa 70.................meh to Minnesota having some kind of an "advantage" here.

Return
Minn 84
Iowa 114............I think this would be more due to Iowa not really having a chance to return any kicks. King has made a few big plays in the return game, just never been able to break one and take it the distance.

So based on this Iowa has a good edge offensively with their balance. But Minnesota wins special teams.

If we can protect the ball, not let Minnesota push us around with their run game and force them to have to turn to Leidner airing it out, and occasionally hit a few big plays.......I like our chances of 10-0.

Watching their game against Ohio State, there's gonna be opportunities for plays to be made in the secondary. They (minus King) just need to catch the damn ball.....

….so Iowa 67 Minnesota 0

Well unfortunately, that game was earlier in the season, before Minnesota had their second wind and Kill retired, which meant Minnesota had to magically elevate its play because of that.

My one concern, which has usually only been a problem on the road, is that Minnesota sells out for this game, which means the whooping and jumping around on the sidelines after every minute (minuut) play, and giving the extra shoves as plays end and after plays, and getting in our players faces and acting all excited like it's their first game ever, which they didn't do for just about any other game, won or lost and then going for broke in terms of risky play-calling with the trickery and fakes and onside kicks etc etc.

Minnesota hasn't really done this on the road, but since they've done it before against Iowa, I can't put it past them to try it again next weekend even though they've lost two straight to Minnesota after playing with that emotional high each weekend since Kill retired.

My hope is that this high they're on, conveniently drops in time for our game and their play is more similar to Northwestern's performance against us this year.

Kinnick will be electric. Get a quick lead and it will get rolling.

Iowa will make MN one dimensional by taking away their running game and it will expose Leidners innacuracy.

He has had some nice performances lately but hasn't faced a D like this. (Yes, I know they played OSU yesterday)

National unit rankings are not as inciteful as the raw numbers.

Comparing OSU and Iowa defenses…

Iowa 12th in total defense (300.89), OSU 13th (302.56)
Iowa 12th in opponent yards per play (4.49), OSU 8th (4.45)
Iowa 9th in opponent pass yards per attempt (5.61), OSU 10th (5.61)
Iowa 12th in opponent pass completion percentage (51.86%), OSU 5th (49.04%)
Iowa 32nd in opponent pass TDs (1.22), OSU 24th (1.11)
Iowa 14th in opponent rush yards per attempt (3.21), OSU 28th (3.52)
Iowa 1st in opponent rush TDs (0.33), OSU 10th (0.78)
Iowa 49th in opponent third down conversion pct. (36%), OSU 25th (32.63%)
Iowa 23rd in sacks (2.78), OSU 12th (3.00)

Would say these defenses might be closer than you think. Still think we shut Minnesota down fairly well.

Yeah Minnesota players seem to talk a lot more in this game and really push the limit on dirty play.
