Looks like we had a few slackers back in 78!I am not sure. I stumbled on this researching your question.
Iowa Hawkeyes 1978 Big Ten Wrestling Tournament
6 Champions
2 runner-up finishes
2 3rd place finishes
Weird - I posted this yesterday and somehow it disappeared?
Since 1969, it's happened 5 times (twice in the Zalesky-era and 3 times in the Brands-era):
2018 – Lee (3rd), Glynn (DNP), Turk (5th), Sorensen (2nd), Kemerer (T-6th, MFF), Marinelli (6th), Gunther (6th), Bowman (8th), Wilcke (6th), Stoll (4th)
2015 – Gilman (2nd), Clark (3rd), Dziewa (2nd), Sorensen (2nd), Kelly (DNP), Moore (DNP), Evans (3rd), Brooks (3rd), Burak (4th), Telford (2nd)
2013 – McDonough (2nd), Ramos (2nd), Ballweg (2nd), Dziewa (DNP), St. John (3rd), Moore (4th), Evans (2nd), E. Lofthouse (3rd), Burak (4th), Telford (3rd)
2006 – Magnani (5th), Dennis (DNP), Tsirtsis (3rd), Eustice (3rd), Johnston (6th), Luedke (4th), Perry (2nd), Bradley (7th), Erekson (6th), Bucklin (DNP)
2005 – Falck (DNP), Galanakis (5th), Tsirtsis (5th), Eustice (3rd), Johnston (3rd), Perry (2nd), L. Lofthouse (DNP), Bradley (4th), Fellers (8th), Fields (5th)
That 2015 year was especially painful as the Hawks tied the Buckeyes for the tournament title, 120-120.
It was actually 1983 that was the best one. I believe it was still Lou Banachat Heavyweight then. We had nine champs and a 4th place. The 4th place was Rico Chiapparelli and he didn't qualify for NCAAs because Big Ten (at that time really 10) didn't get as big of an allotment (If memory serves, it was a straight 3 per weight them) And the coaches voted for Wildcards at the time and he didn't get a Wildcard. Rumor was Robinson and Hellickson blocked it. We also had 9 AAs that year and Rico would have made the podium and made it 10.Who was at heavyweight/unlimited that year?
Oh, that brings back sad memories of the younger Weber not getting a wildcard as a senior. It's probably a significant factor in why MN won nations at Iowa City in 2001.It was actually 1983 that was the best one. I believe it was still Lou Banachat Heavyweight then. According to the brackets, Rico did wrestle and finished in the blood round. He was the only non-B1G Champ and the only non-AA on the team that year. J Robinson? He was an Iowa assistant coach in '83It was actually 1983 that was the best one. I believe it was still Lou Banachat Heavyweight then. We had nine champs and a 4th place. I stand corrected. My memory is really getting bad. I remember Robinson and Hellickson blocking one of our really good guys from getting one, just can't think of who. I had it in my mind that was the year he left for Minnesota, then Johnson left a couple of years later. I'm going to quit posting '80s stuff without looking it up. Too much misinformation as it is. I also remember I was really mad when Rico got 4th because we thought for sure he'd get blocked. I do remember now him getting pinned off one of his funk rolls, but I was thinking that was '84 in my mind. He redshirted in '84 though.J Robinson? He was an Iowa assistant coach in '83
All good. '83 was before my time, but I really enjoy looking up past results like this and hearing stories of some of the historical teams.I stand corrected. My memory is really getting bad. I wouldn’t worry about it. There are plenty of people on this board who make corrections to our past results and that’s pretty cool in my mind. If you pulled all that from memory your brain is just fine.I stand corrected. My memory is really getting bad. Steve Wilbur - wrestled at Big 10s as a Junior (DNP) and Senior (3rd).Who was at heavyweight/unlimited that year?
Another crazy thing was 2018. That was probably the best team tOSU has ever hand. They won B1G's that year over PSU by 16.5. They even scored 134.5 at NCAA's only to still lose to PSU by 7. Iowa took a distant 3rd, but still well ahead of Michigan in 4th, flipping the B1G results...Weird - I posted this yesterday and somehow it disappeared?

Where do you look them up? The NCAA site is so hard to navigate for that stuff, and I forgot the name of the one site I really loved, and I'm not sure it's still around. All good. The '86 NCAAs were my favorite, and probably my favorite Iowa team. I think they would have set the record (they did at that time) if Eglund hadn't deserted them and Sindlinger wasn't a football star. All good. '83 was before my time, but I really enjoy looking up past results like this and hearing stories of some of the historical teams.
I could be wrong, but I don't think they gave places to 8th in '78. I think they started giving to 8th in '80, and had to adjust points given accordingly. That could be it. I'm sure someone will tell me if that is incorrect.Iowa only had 117.25 team points in ‘78.
In ‘84 they had 175.75. The results were pretty equal. Is that a typo or did team scoring change that much?
wrestlingstats.com is great for every year of NCAA Tournament results with every bracket. Many of the years either have all the team scores or the top 10 teams scores, as well.Where do you look them up? This is for anyone. What sites do you use? I used to be a nut about statistics. I would bring my Session Six brackets home from the NCAAs and spend three or four days figuring out which conferences had how many AAs, which home states had the same, etc. I've gotten lazier in my old age, and have had a few recent years I missed th Ncaas after 31 in a row, and 37 overall. I still enjoy that stuff, just don't work as hard at it. I would love to have a reliable site to look stuff up on. I know PSU has a good one, but it probably only goes back to 2011
