Constant underperforming

Wrong. I just don’t get caught up in my emotions. I’m realistic and see the big picture. We’re the 2nd best program in the country. Tell me your plan to take over the freight train that is PSU…. In the meantime I’ll continue to support my favorite team.

I’ll add that many complaints are validated, but I’m not going to pretend I’m smarter than Tom Brands or a better wrestling coach. Put in an application, email Gary Barta, or donate a very large sum of money or shut up.
Iowa was ranked second all season and will finish second. Penn State is in the middle of a great run. That may continue for a while. He has a really good situation there. There is, however, been only one program consistently good over the past 40-45 years, and that program is IOWA. Iowa has maintained the strong program even though the level of talent in our state has diminished greatly over the years. Okie State is really struggling and is currently coached by one of the all-time greats of the sport. Should he be fired? ISU was once an NCAA wrestling power and has not been able to get back to that level. It is tough to do. They are to the point where they celebrate a top 10 finish. Hang with the Hawks. We will be back on top soon.

I don't think anyone here is saying Iowa wrestling doesn't need to significantly shake things up, but outside of Carl Sanderson, who right now do you think could run Iowa wrestling better than Tom Brands?

Last time I checked, Dake and Taylor are still competing through another Olympic cycle and Burroughs doesn't seem interested in coaching at this level, at least not yet. It's also a major stretch to just assume those guys could step in and replicate what Tom has done with zero experience coaching at this level.

I am curious who you think Iowa could realistically get who could step in right now and do a better job than Tom.

Jake Herbert :)

Yeah, if anything this is possibly the best our team has done compared to seed in quite some time. The problem is in how low our seeds are. Warner is too talented to go into NCAAs seeded 14th. Abe Assad was too high of a recruit to be a 12-seed four years into college.
agree on Warner. Abe is a warrior. Not many guys would have gutted this season out. He gets a pass from me.

This thinking is part of the problem imo. I think we focus on winning the big matchups in the regular season to get better seeds. In doing so we are getting worn out by NCAAs. Who gives a shit what number is next to your name at the beginning of the tournament. It only matters what number is there at the end. PSU frequently loses matches during the regular season but is fresher and game at NCAAs. Why is it a bad thing that Nelson and Warner are the ones taking scalps? You think Michigan fans are upset Amine took Ls this year and was an 11 seed? He made the semis.

I don't think this has been true. Brands has been willing to rest guys more during the regular season for several years now and he takes a lot of heat for it.
I don't know what Iowa does in training. But my impression is that collegiate wrestling often has focused on high intensity sessions. But I have a lot of people arguing that moderate or even low intensity should make up 80% of your training. This is an area where I think that NCAA practice restrictions could be harmful to the athletes.

I thought this was an OSU thread. 2 AAs: Fix, Plott. Wow.
FWIW:
  • Semifinal - Vito Arujau (Cornell) 24-1 won by major decision over Daton Fix (Oklahoma State) 29-1 (MD 11-3)
  • Quarterfinal - Chris Foca (Cornell) 27-2 won by fall over Dustin Plott (Oklahoma State) 25-5 (Fall 1:54)
  • Cons. Round 3 - Jacob Cardenas (Cornell) 20-5 won by decision over Luke Surber (Oklahoma State) 23-10 (Dec 12-5)

This might not be the year to actually make this thread. Considering we have 3 people far exceeding their seeds. I don't think anyone on earth expected brands to place out side of some of the people on this board.
Warner went from the 14 to top 6 outplacing Dean.
The only real underperformed is lee but it's clear something hasn't been right with him ever since the knee brace went back on.
Can't really call Kennedys performance under performing when his draw was just awful

Imo, Iowa is finishing second to PSU in spite of Brands being the HC, not because of. I think quite a few coaches could have had the similar results the past 3-4 years. There was a ton of talent in that room. Iowa finishing second next year with 0 Spencer points would be a real accomplishment. I’m pretty sure Iowa won’t make any changes this year, so we’ll see.

It’s possible but we’ll never know until Tom retires.

You do realize that the 5 guys from PSU that are in the finals were seeded 1,1,2,3 and 3, right? The only high seed that made the semis had his part of the bracket blow up in Van Ness. No matter what you say, if you want to be wrestling on Saturday Night, seeding plays a very big part.

What a comical take. Without Brands you wouldn’t even have Nelson let alone any other factor. Without Nelson’s points they would be in a tight race to even get a team trophy.

Make no mistake, Brands has done a LOT to try to catch PSU. Major change in recruiting, big fund raising for new facility. Mastering transfer portal. It is just THAT hard to get to PSU’s level and when you compare everyone to that, they ALL are going to fall way short.
