Cook needs to come back to work on his shot

Many Iowa fans(message board ones anyway) like to do this to their senior leaders(or in TC’s case a junior considering leaving). We had these exact same posts when Jok was a senior. Many were certain we would improve after he left. That didn’t turn out too well.

This same commentary will be on the board next year for JBo. “We will be so much better with Joe T. At the point”, etc. the following year will be Garza and on and on.

No one ever takes into account when you are the focal point of a defensive game plan like Cook, as compared to RK who is more of an afterthought of the defensive game plan. If RK was expected to play 30 minutes, get 15 points and 9 rebounds a night, and lead us to victory they would dislike him as well.

If you are one who feels like our younger guys are always waaay better our older guys, ask yourself this: Why are we not always improving? By now we should be competing for a national championship.

It’s not that I want Cook gone, I want him and Fran and staff to realize that forcing the offense through him leads to less desirable results. This isn’t based off one game, this is based off a whole season of proof. The games or parts of games where Iowa has looked best this year is when the offense has filtered through Garza and Wieskamp primarily and Cook has been a secondary part of the offense. It is not an anomaly. It’s been pretty consistent. I want Cook to stay and be a big part of the team but I want Fran and Cook to adjust. And I know Fran knows more about basketball then me and all that but I believe they are being stubborn out of loyalty. Also, this team defensively Fred’s off their offense, not vice versa. They have shown their defensive intensity is better when their offense is performing better.

And regarding Cook’s effort, I don’t need people to tell me he is giving 100% all the time when I can see for myself he is not always. I’m talking rebounding, defense and going after loose balls. He is way too good of an athlete to get beat as much as he does and come up short on these things that we all know he would get to if giving maximum effort. And that’s a problem. Effort should come easy and shouldn’t ever be something that is worried about. It’s one thing to get beat because the other team ot player is just better and more talented, it’s pathetiv to get beat just because you don’t want to try all the time.

The treatment of Tyler Cook on this board is sad. He has his faults like everyone else. A lot of things said about him are racially motivated and that is upsetting as a person in general. I thought we were better than this.

Total bullshit.

Tyler Cook was likely hurt most by AAU ball playing with Jayson Tatum who hogged the ball and took every shot. Tyler needed to have his overall game developed much earlier given his natural gifts but played a garbage guy role with Tatum. It’s no wonder he struggles with some of the basic fundamentals and shooting more than 5 feet from the bucket.

Nah. There have been posts on this board about his intelligence away from the floor. There have been posts about his work ethic. You guys aren’t going to change my mind. I’m not taking about on court deficiencies. I’m talking about insinuating certain things about TC away from the floor that are completely baseless. Why is that? I haven’t read that about anyone on this team.
So you’re saying that in your mind, black people aren’t smart and are lazy off the court? It seems that you’re the only one putting those things together.

Defense, offensive & defensive Rebounding, post up moves & receiving the ball in the post & footwork should be Tyler’s main focus going in to his senior year at Iowa. He can work on his jumper too (although that won’t get him on an nba roster) I think working on a quick move after receiving the ball in the post, explosive going to the basket will be awesome for him! And a good point gaurd that can get to the basket and get the ball to him slashing will be good for him and the whole IOWA team!! right now Iowa’s guards can’t realky break down a d and get to basket off the bounce and actually Tyler has almost as much success getting to the rim off the dribble as the guards do which is why he’s asked to do from time to time and that in its self is a problem! Better guards better Iowa it’s not all on one player..

@jellyfish10 is the last thing from a " crazy lefty " or any kind of a troll. He has an opinion that he's entitled to. I think at times it could be like a reverso racism, we expect more from TC because he is black as are the majority of today's great players. When Baer gets beat to the rim , it's " oh, he's slow ". When TC gets beat " it's oh, he's lazy ". I think that's the conundrum...

I didn't say he was a crazy leftie, although I guess that is implied because lefties have to believe a lot of things that aren't true and disbelieve a lot of things that are absolutely true (e.g. the binary nature of biological gender).

Only a leftie would imagine racism as the motive for off court criticisms of a black player; although I notice you don't have any actual examples either. I repeat: I read almost every post about the major players and I've never seen anything about TC being lazy off the court nor a rumor of any academic problems.

TC can be lazy on defense and especially rebounding. You chose a terrible example because Baer never plays at less than maximum hustle.

Picked a bad time because TC is playing out of control, trying to do too much and killing us today-amidst a terrible team performance in general. He looks like the star of the 9th grade team trying to go coast to coast and totally out of control.

... While its unlikely that he's real high IQ ...

WTH? This 79 year old granny (Iowa grad, class of '61) finds this judging assessment of Tyler Cook shocking and appalling . And it's based on your critique of his floor game? C'mon now. As a former honor student with two college degrees, I can guarantee you that my floor game has always sucked. Come to think of it, I don't even have a floor game any more, except to make sure that I stay upright on it with my cane.

Lesson for today: There is no correlation between floor game excellence and intelligence. Quiz tomorrow.
