Cook..wowsa

And there were a couple of dunks that he clanked that would have made his stat line look even better.

His inside dominance of the terps bigs on the offensive end was the counterpart to Bohannon's dead-eye performance from the three line.
No more freshman WALL for Tyler. He went through.@Always double double.NEED the boards always.

If he learns to just bank those in hard off the board, he'd add 6 or 8 points to his stat line....dunks look cool, but they still only count for 2.

If cook played all year like he did last night he just might have been a one and done. Wow he was a beast. Great game Tyler

One and done might be a stretch. Heck, you could say the same about jbo last night.

Let's just stick with he had his best game in his young career at Iowa. The light almost seemed to go on for him last night. I saw some leadership skills in him last night as well. This bodes very well for Iowa in the coming years. This will be cooks team starting next year.

Cook definitely attempts some thunderous dunks and has missed a decent share of them. It makes thinking back to Aaron White even more impressive - I've never seen someone so easily dunk in heavy traffic. Most of White's dunks weren't highlight-reel quality because he made it look so effortless.

I don't recall white dunking in heavy traffic. His dunks were mostly uncontested, but man could he get up fast, lighting quick on his dunks.

If he played like last night every game he would be a lottery pick. Hence I said every game.

I know what you said. Exactly why I said if jbo played like he did last night all season, he would also be a lottery pick. Context.

Best part is Tyler will only get better as a rebounder as he gets stronger. Plus can't under estimate the finger injury had on his shot early on after he returned from his injury. Could tell little shaky less confident but can see on his fts how much better he looks. I bet we see him see more jumpers from next year when he becomes are top scorer I bet next season.

Most dunks in general are uncontested, but if you don't remember Aaron dunking in traffic you might want to rewatch some of his film. He had amazing body control while in the air which made him a big threat on back-door alley-oops and drives to the basket. Also, as you point out, he was a very "quick" jumper which allowed him to quickly dunk after offensive rebounds while the rest of the guys in the paint were still on the floor. He had an uncanny knack for dunking the ball - I don't know of any source of stats that tracks how many dunks players have during the course of a season, but I would not be surprised if Aaron White had more career dunks than any other Hawkeye.

Cook has a very nice outside 3 shot which is scary to think how good Cook could become if can add this shot to his collection of offensive skills real time in league play. He was knocking that outside 3 shot in PTL last summer and it looks real good when it goes in. He just hasn't worked on it or taking the shot enough yet in prime time play during the season but I would say, look for this more next year....btw, his FT shooting is getting better too.

I see Cook as a 15 & 8 type next year.......not sure if it will be next year or year 3 where he starts shooting more 3s.

Aaron White couldn't dunk in traffic like Tyler cook can as a freshman.. not knocking Aaron but nope Tyler is fearless as a freshman if there is a opportunity to slam it he's taking it up no hesitations.. Aaron caught a lot of oops too on the run.. Tyler will go straight up on you drop step Aaron wasn't doing much of that..

I dont think hes lacking strength and definitely not explosion, he just needs to figure out how to rebound and defend.

Its instinct, technique and aggression.

Last night was a step in the right direction.

The block at the rim was nice, something he should be able to do allot more. He also high pointed a rebound which has been rare. Something Baer does 3 or 4 times a game most nights.

Offensively hes there. He will usually make a couple of those dunk attempts or get fouled.

White was a great finisher but 99% of his dunks were not what I would consider contested, meaning a defender in between him and the basket.

Even with defenders in the area he was great at getting up before the contest and if there was a contest he usually drew the foul.

What Cook tried to do last night was a dunk over a defender.

I think by next year Cook will be comfortable enough to face up and blow by bigger defenders.

Right now hes goes mostly back to the basket but he has the ability to handle.

He also has a jump shot, hes just not doing it much yet. Once all 3 come together hell be impossible to gaurd.

I think hell become a more explosive Nigel Hayes.

The sky is the limit for Cook. The "stare" was epic. Eddie Horton was one of my favorite Hawks and Tyler can bring that tough attitude to the team.

He would not. I mean that's basically what Swanigan is, plus he can shoot the three and Swanigan is barely a first round pick or early second in most mock drafts. Unless Cook becomes like 6'10 or gets a jumper, he doesn't have to worry about going pro early.

The magic johnson running hook shot came out....if he can perfect that.....

Love that shot and the amazing thing is, he can attempt that shot that with either hand. Defenders will not be able to overplay one side when defending Cook whether he has the ball facing him or with his back to the basket. His first step is very quick also. Looking forward to many pivot left/right one dribble dunks in the years ahead.

In addition to the magic baby hook, would love to see him develop a fadaway jumper also. Others have mentioned his shooting range out to the arc. I hope that is rare - this team is loaded with 3PT shooters. Cook is much more effective staying inside, within 15 feet of the basket.

I foresee some double teams in the years ahead which will leave Bohannon, Ellingson, Williams, Uhl, or Baer with an open 3PT shot with one or two quick passes.

He's a beast. I always thought he looked a tad undersized on TV but after seeing him up close at games, he is a monster. I'd be extremely happy if he stayed one more year

Looking to the future - Cook will have some other bigs to complement his game ... so he can remain fresh. Pemsl, Wagner, and Garza ... and perhaps Kriener and Nunge too.

On top of that, in '17 we also get McCaffery ... so we're adding another good perimeter guy. In '18, we get Wieskamp ... who can probably do it all. Add those guys to Bohannon and Ellingson ... and we then have a perimeter that can definitely spread out Ds. Then add to the mix, a guy like Moss who is clearly a really fluid talent ... definitely capable of both shooting and slashing into the lane.

It looks to me like the Hawks will only continue to improve through the coming years. Should be an exciting squad to follow.

He can keep attempting the dunks as far as Im concerned. Highest percentage shot in the game. I would like to see that explosion used to block more shots, but I think we will see it as he learns.

You must not watch the NBA. PF in the game today must have a good jumper which cook has yet the develop I see over the offseason him working on his jumper and defense.

At best he will be a 3 year player but his mom chose Iowa for his degree and basketball second. Cook will make the NBA and I think he will develop and good jumper and decent 3 point shot.

If he does this he has a good chance of making the NBA as a late first rounder/early second if he doesn't he will just be a great college player who got picked late second or undrafted.

He's really putting it together I can't wait to see him and Joe W play together and for cook to be playing with a true center when he's a PF.

Our guards are great at finding cook I think Thomas Bryant should make his guards sit and watch film on how the guards get cook the ball. Man that Indiana team is defuncinal!

Congrats cook on your best game of the season on both ends of the floor your first of many 20/10 games.

And bohannon too! Think if we beat Wisconsin we beat the three top teams in the big ten and should have beat Minnesota

On a side note Illinois could make the tournament they have 2 winnable games left. So those losses won't look as bad as people thought.

Agree, he'll never be a lottery pick but hes got better upside than Swanigan.

Swanigan is pretty slow and unathletic. For how big he is hes really not that effective around the basket. I dont see Swanigan translating to the nba unless he can really prove he can hit nba 3s.

I was at the game, and he was every bit as impressive in person as he was on TV. His ability to go either direction with both hands, with finesse or power really stood out.

He was by far the most physical player on the court, too. He made Maryland's bigs look soft. Iowa seemed determined to get him the ball early and often. I know everybody thinks the post game is dying if not dead in modern b-ball, but man it made a huge difference in that game. Everybody (including the Terps) seems determined these days to simply trade 3s all game, but having reliable scoring on the blocks makes a huge difference.

Cook is staying four unless he becomes a knock down 3 point shooter in the next two years.
No doubt. Why does everybody think Cooks leaving early? There are a lot of great players in college, and only about 15-20 get any real shot in any given year. Were just getting a glimpse of what he can become, but he's got a lot of work to do, to be doing what we saw Saturday three out of every four games. I'd love to see him work more on the 12 to 15 footers, more than the three point shot. If he starts falling in love with the three, those rebound numbers will go right back down, if he's spending a lot of time away from the paint. The three point shot is the great equalizer IF you can hit between 35 and 40%. If not your just trying to score by getting farther away from the basket. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me to take the best low block scorer we've had in a long time, and hope he starts jacking some three's! We've got guys who can shoot the bombs. Give me Jbo, Ellingson, Baer, Moss from outside, dropping it on the block to Cook, Pemsl, or Kreiner. The inside out game the Hawks played Saturday should be the blueprint going forward.

If Cook can make a decent percentage from 3 then he should shoot them, thats just common sense.

If he cant, then dont.

Forget the three. If he can make a 10 footer with consistency the opponent will have to double team him. That opens up a lot of offensive weapons.

Remember, he's a month behind everybody else...

TC would NOT be a lottery pick. There's going to be a whole slew of freshmen coming out this year, too.

I doubt Tyler would be first round even with a stellar season. I think we need to pump the brakes a bit on him yet. Enormous potential, yes. But in the NBA he'd be an undersized 4 with no outside game whatsoever.
