Cool act of sportsmanship

damn right. The brotherhood of wrestling shows itself.
Amen.

Isn't that what Brett Farve did for Michael Strahand in football. Fell down with 30 sec. to go to let him have his 23 sack of the year?

I'd venture to say that it wasn't about the win but respect the guys on the opposing team had for that wrestler.

So to play devils advocate would anyone here be ok with an Iowa guy forfeiting a match to give an injured PSU, tOSU, OSU, or any other team their 100th win?

D1 is a whole different animal than HS.

That said, giving up a FF in a meaningless early season dual against a non-B1G team wouldn't bother me. It's not assessed against an individual
wrestler, so it's meaningless.

D1 may be a different animal but the fact remains you're giving an opponent a win. Hey is sucks that he got hurt but should the guys who Ness faced last year at the NCAA tourney have forfeited to him cause he's a nice guy and deserved to place higher? It's a neat story but injuries happen and sometimes you can't get to that special number for a win or you don't get that title. MM was hurt his senior year should the guys have just said you know if he was healthy he'd have beat me so I will forfeit to him. Guessing I am going to get ripped on for this but it's not my job to make some other kid feel good and just give him a win and his team some free points because he's a nice guy. Guess even in a meaningless dual I want to see the team go out there to win every match.

Thank God, everyone does not have your attitude.

I'm not gonna rip you. This story was posted on an Illinois forum and this was my response:
Part of records and milestones is being available to compete. The last victory is kind of hollow to me. I would be more receptive of the gesture if the kid had a career ending injury or something but he will wrestle in college next season. Injuries are a part of sport and there are countless athletes that didn't reach their goals because of injury. Imagine if they all were gifted the wins at the end of a season or career to artificially reach a goal. Meh

It was high school. The kid was gone for the season. He was friends with kids from the opposing team through out of season wrestling (something that is great about or sport). The ff had no bearing on the outcome of the meet or any affect on the rest of the reason. None of the points you were trying to make are applicable to the situation IMHO. Good for all the KIDS involved

Each to their own but injuries happen, I wrestled guys who were friends all through out high school and in college but wouldn't have ever wanted them to give me a forfeit because I was hurt regardless of what the dual outcome would have been.

Like I said I am sure my opinion is not the popular or politically correct one and if no one agrees with me it isn't going to change my view and I know I won't change anyone else's view. Just stating my thoughts on it.

The victory may be hollow, but the gesture isn't. 99 or 100, who really cares? The fact that wrestlers on another team want to perform a gesture to salute your ability and achievements, that's meaningful:

Strunk said, “Some of our guys know Lucas pretty well and said he’s a really good guy, so we wanted to do something for him. I told the guys that Colin (Runshaw) should go up to 160 and I’ll give up the forfeit at 152. It wasn’t a hard decision for me – he’s a senior and was stuck on 99 wins and it was the right thing to do.”

Agreed!

Nothing wrong with having differing opinions (although I'm right and you're wrong:D)

AZChief said it best IMO. Evidently the kids from the opposing team had a lot of respect for him. I would venture to say 95% (pulled out of my ass) of the time this doesn't happen because the guy at 99 wins doesn't give a crap nor does the other team. In this case, the other team looks like they gave a crap. And, it's not like the guy can re-gift it. Would be interesting if he had a Brands "you get what you earn" moment though.

Me? I wouldn't care. The sun will still rise in the morning, and my 99 and whatever record isn't going to impress anyone less than my 100 and whatever. However, the parties involved thought it would be a worthwhile gesture. They're the ones closest to the situation so good on them for being kind and considerate.

I don't see it as hollow. Over the course of a HS career you'll get forfeits, injury defaults, and cupcakes thrown in when the other team bumps a kid for a better matchup. As the father of a kid who sound up with 98 wins; mainly because of four snow outs and a jagoff coach who double-forfeited a match, I can tell you a lot of kids would greatly appreciate that gesture.

Mickey Mantles' last career at bat Denny McClain served up a fat one and Mantle knocked it out if the park. Nobody complained.

The difference with those other FFs racked up over a career is that they weren't given with the intent to get him to 100 wins.

Re: Mantle
I'm guessing someone may have complained if that HR was a major milestone or broke a record.

Like I said before, Meh.

I am about as big a hater of participation trophy, everybody wins, PC mentality that has infected our nation. However, wrestling is a sport where an opponent can command a grudging respect wrestling them throughout the years.

I couldn't hit a curve ball for shit, had a pretty good fastball, had a Larry Bird type vertical...the even made a movie about it called White Men Can't Jump. However, I could give you a tough six minutes out on the mat. Our sport doesn't require natural athletic ability...for the most part, it's just hard work and grit. Nothing wrong with peers recognizing a kid who probably has both. Give me that over a participation trophy any day.

Correct....100 isn't anything special now as far as a career total

Depends. In NJ it's still a big deal because they're highly restricted on how many matches they can wrestle. Very, very few NJ wrestlers will get 150 matches let alone wins. And if your team wrestles a tough schedule, 100 is a big accomplishment. Certainly not the same as it was 30 years ago, but a big accomplishment nonetheless.

Same in PA. You only get so many competition points per season. The coach and AD figure how to divvy that up between dual meets and toury's. Kids no longer get 50+ matches a year. A 100 wins in Pa is still pretty special.
