125 CRUZ UR vs #13 Not sure where the Beaver was(no pun intended) at the apparent time when match should start? Good hand fighting, TWOOO shots he could not finish, then good work to get a TD but gave up reversal, and did not escape. Kid was tuff rider, did not like the antics from the beaver at the end! 70

133 AYALA #7 vs UR Looked bigger, stronger, more "fresh" not sucked out. TDs looked slick and diverse, got a little sloppy giving up TD in 2nd, but continued to pure it on for the tech 88

141 BLOCK UR vs UR again there wrestler was MIA??? once under way the kid showed some power on 1st TD, good hard work to get escape, BIG TD late and TUFF ride out to get 1st win. Other kid had some good wins last years so give him the 83

149 PARCO #4 vs UR started thinking of opening a Tattoo parlor during this match, in any case, kid is fast, strong, has good tank and looked good in all positions and situations, match was closer then expected 75

157 RATHJEN UR vs UR , mostly just looking to see TEEMER but...... 1st TD call I thought might not have been a TD??? Did not matter much as he couldn't get much going. 65

165 CALIENDO #2 vs UR Slick on 1st TD, good scramble on 2nd, great work to get 3rd with some backs with very short time in 1st to blow match open.Continued to do what he should. 90

174 BRANDS??? #4 at 184 or something vs #32 Good hand fighting, Defense, and ride gets him a W but needs to do more. 70

184 ARNOLD??? #7 at 174 or something vs UR, He is like wrestling an OAK TREE with speed!!! He is THICK and QUICK!!! nice 1st TD even better 2nd going to be fun to watch this kid! 91

197 #1 BUCHANAN vs #5 MATCH of the NIGHT, WOW defense on 1st shot!!! Kid was after him and I was a little worried because he looked tired but got STRONGER as the match went on it seemed. Did not like the quick 1st stall call? Showed tremendous heart and skill to gain lead late. STATEMENT mat returns at end! 95

285 KUETER #11 vs UR Good D on first shot, bottom line is he has all the skills to be a multi NCAA champion needs to add Horse Power! 80

Nice Venue, good crowd, saw plenty of IOWA fans in stands give em an A!!! felt the BEAVERS wrestled tuff, stayed on mat for the most part so give them and coach credit. Good to see them working hard out west and would love to see more programs out that way! Pretty good play by play, thought the one guy saying "riding system" was kinda funny though.

They stated during Ayala match that with his brother joining team, they are the 47th pair WOW!!! Also said something about father son during Brands match something like 9 have gone through now.

GREAT to have WRESTLING SEASON HERE!!!!

Parco gonna win close and comfortable. Obviously the skills to open it up and pour it on but yeah his style isn’t changing now.

My two cents:

This team has more pure athleticism up and down the line-up than any other Iowa team in recent memory.

Ayala, Parco, Caliendo, Arnold, Buchanan and Keuter are all impressive, fast-twitch athletes. Teemer will be another when he joins the starting line-up. A lot to be excited about.

Parco didn't run up the score, but he can sure move. Fun to watch.

I suspect Peterson will overtake Cruz at 125, but Cruz wrestled admirably against a stronger opponent.

Ryder Block has crazy length for his weight. Fingers crossed that he starts to put it all together.

With four strong wrestlers at 174/184, the coaches need to establish a fair process and let the two best guys go at 174 and 184. If Nelson's the guy, fine, but they should guard against optics of nepotism creating bad will. I know Nelson has some rust to knock off, but it was disappointing he didn't attempt a takedown against a dude who was a five-year backup at Missouri.

Pretty much spot on in my opinion. Except anything over 60 is usually considered passing and no way Rathjen gets a passing grade last night. He always seems to be either really on or really off, maybe it was a style match up.

i don’t do grades but i was really impressed with 133, 165, 184, 197. also liked what i saw from 141, 149, and hwt. not worried one bit about a few guys looking tired. i would rather that than them be in peak shape November 2

this oregon state team and some of these wins are going to look much better on paper at the end of the year.

Yea I hear you, I give a passing grade I guess for what I consider at least giving some effort. Really not sure how good he is, or how good the other kid is ? Maybe I am getting TWOOO soft in my old age???

A little early to get to excited but man did I like what I saw from Drake, Cali, Gabe and Buch. Kueter and Block will get better as the year goes. Parco is what he is not going to score a lot of points but he is going to control matches and do a lot of winning. Reminds me of Lugo.

Lets shit on a kid who could've transferred when they brought in a couple guys, but chose to fight for his spot. Who wrestled a week earlier a weight class lower in an intra squad, and who until recently expected Teemer to be going. It was apparent the guy was too strong for him and Caleb didn't have his A game while being a weight class smaller. This is only directed at the small handful of posters that do the same crap every meet and relates to this thread and the pbp. It's quite pathetic.

Brother, I don't think anyone is shitting on him or hating. They're merely giving grades and feedback based on what they saw and what they know. And for those of us who only get to see him when he's wrestling we've seen him look really really good and at times, and some folks have even talked about him competing for one of the spots this year. So when he goes out and looks just the opposite of what we were expecting we are a bit dumbfounded. That's why I love hearing from guys like you and a few others who are in the know who see and know what we don't; it gives us a real perspective that we don't otherwise have access to.

And if I'm not mistaken, the kid that Brands wrestled beat Plott last year or the year before. The kid is tougher than people think.

Just my thoughts...

Not sure we really learned a whole lot, but this a team that will finished 2nd.

125 - Cruz looks better than I thought he would honestly.

133 - NO BRAKES DRAKE!!!! That sequence to get the last takedown? Shot, snap, fake, snap, outside step... Whoo buddy. That's a pace that wins chips. And it looks sustainable up a weight.

141 - Block looks exactly like what he's doing. Cutting a bunch of weight, conserving energy, but the kid is damn athletic.

149 - He is who we thought he is. Someone else posted his bonus rate, but that's just not his jam. Never looked threatened, and moves really well.

157 - Rathjen gonna Rathjen. There's a reason we got Teemer. Nothing to see here

165 - When you talk about development - Caliendo is the picture of it. He was not this offensive at NDSU. Looks like the 2nd best wrestler in the nation right now.

174 - Brands gonna Brands. Anyone expecting him to bonus guys isn't paying attention. Again, that's not who he is. He's going grind his way to wins almost no matter who he wrestles. Hope he does shoot more though - that's a recipe for a 2-2 at NCAAs

184 - I don't know. Arnold looks happy at 184. He was a lot more offensive than I've seen him even since high school. He's so athletic, and if he can keep that up, he's going to be a problem at 184.

197 - Buchanon is stupid athletic. fought off, what, THREE deep doubles from Munoz???!! That was impressive. That Iowa gas tank really showed in the 3rd.

285 - This is going to sound weird... but whatever conditioning Kueter is doing - needs to be halved.

1. He ain't got grinder muscles. He's half black. Think of a johnny lovett - he wasn't out of shape, he was overtrained. (CMU 3 hour practices will do that to you).

2. Kueter is small for the weight, so his muscles are exerting so much energy to accomplish anything. Cardio just for the sake of it, is going to cost him strength/power he needs.

Overall - the team looks good. I will always give credit where do - and the guys have a variety of offensive skills. They're finishing well, and we don't seem completely lost in scrambles. It's a breath of fresh air.

Craps or teammates? ;)

At this point in his career, expecting Nelson to change his style is like expecting IRONBIRD to lose the caps lock. Your best bet is to polish what's there, not try to start anew.

Only Vince Turk gets to shoot teammates.
