Maybe she took a crazy ARM mortgage when rates crashed during the pandemic, was only paying interest, and is now on the hook for the actual repayment of the loan with much worse interest rates?

I remember reading bonkers situations people signed up for during the housing bubble, but I don't know to what extent those 'deals' are still around.
