Cortez Bros-Gilroy Cali

Hope not. CA, with over 800 high schools, has a single class state tournament, one of the toughest in the nation. Plenty of stars have come out of CA in last few decades - Eric Guerrero, Jake Varner, Jason Welch, Morgan McIntosh, Aaron Pico, Zahid Valencia, Nashon Garrett, Jesse Delgado and others. Would be a mistake to overlook CA, especially with PA and OH pretty tight with their own powerhouse universities.

Billy Murphy was the dominant wrestler in CA right after Varner graduated. He was at or near the top of HS recruits his SR year. I believe he faced of against another very high recruit, Frishkorn of Oklahoma (?) in some post season tournament and won. Brands recruited him and had him for a RS fr year.

My memory is a little hazy but I believe he was undefeated his RS fr year and was able to handle Dan Dennis in practice, though Dennis continued to get better after that. Murphy had a troubled childhood (father in prison) and had difficulties adjusting to college. I think he dropped out after a year and briefly tried MMA? Someone may know more about that.

When Murphy was at Iowa Central, he beat the Iowa starter in a dual. Might have been Dennis. It was the Iowa Duals where the early duals were in some tiny Fieldhouse gym, and the last dual (ASU?) was at CHA.

I was mat side for that. Dennis won 3-2 over an extremely gassed Murphy.

I could see A.C. in a Hawkeye singlet.

The 120 Cortez was stuck in a defensive fall a couple of times and the ref wouldn't call it. Ended up winning 1-0 against the returning champ.
