Cory Clark on USA Wrestling's Bonus Points podcast

This is one of the best interviews I've ever heard. I can't emphasize enough how impressed I am with CC from this interview alone -- he is incredibly articulate and does a great job describing various details on the mental aspects of the sport. There are no generic responses; really lets you inside the mind of a champion.

Agreed. I got kind of choked up when he talks about Gilman on the last half of the interview.

This was straight up awesome...Cory hit it out of the park in his post match interview and one ups that here. You can tell how strongly he feels about Gilman losing and close they have become over the years. Cory really opens it up and gives it straight in a very personable way. Great job by Immel at just letting him talk where sometimes interviewers want to inject their own 2 cents.

Yeah Immel was great! His questions were short and to the point. I get so annoyed when an interviewer rambles on for 30 seconds and asks about 5 different questions in the same sentence.

A must listen!! I admit that I've been a bigger fan of Gilman than Clark, but was very impressed with Cory in this interview. So many things struck me - he gives very thoughtful answers (I loved his post-finals interview when he said he'd like to be able to wrestle himself). I laughed at his final comment, directed to young wrestlers --- "nothing really comes easy, and that's the fun part to it, that's the fun factor, that when you work really hard and you accomplish something, winning is fun." Then the interviewer said "I'd like to end the show with a little fun" (referring to rapid-fire questions). Man, I love that word! :D

Great interview. After listening to several interviews during/post the NCAA tournament I think Cory became a better wrestler as a result of his injury. It made him stronger mentally and more focused internally/less focused on his opponents or other distractions that might take him off his game. Almost like losing one of the five senses and therefore making the other senses stronger to compensate. Plus it was nice learning more about Cory as he's usually less willing to put himself into the limelight.

Not to run down another person, ok I'm going to do that, but the difference in Jason Bryant interviewing CC and the recent Spencer Lee interview is striking.

Listening to JB and comparing it to Scott Casber, SMH. Thumbs up and way to go JB

I don't think that was JB, or are you talking about another interview? Pretty sure it was Richard Immel.

He mentioned on the interview that he feels like he could step on the mat right now and compete with the other freestyle guys out there at his weight. Can anyone tell me who those guys are and how big of a challenge it would be for Cory to get to that level (for instance has he wrestled any of them before already)?

Sorry if this has been discussed, but has Clark had, or will he have surgery for either of his injuries (shoulder/wrist)?

Curious to see how Clark does at the next level.

Thanks. I had no idea he's already ranked #6 in the weight class. And Gilman #9 in the other weight class.

So looking through those rankings, #3 at the weight is Cody Brewer, which is who Cory lost to in the finals his sophomore year.

#2 at the weight is Jayson Ness, who Daniel Dennis was beating 4-2 with 20 seconds left in the finals before getting taken down to his back to lose last second.

And #1 at the weight is Logan Steiner who was a 4-time champ but he was 141lb so I don't think Cory ever wrestled him.

He says in the interview linked above that he's going to get the injuries taken care of (both shoulder and wrist). I don't know if he specifically mentioned the word surgery but that's definitely the way I interpreted it. He sounded disappointed he can't go straight into freestyle because he needs to get the injuries healed up first so he will be out of commission for awhile. He said he feels like if he could just keep going right now with his conditioning where it is now he would like his chances against the top guys at the weight.

I think the weigh ins are moving from day before to 2 hours prior. I'm guessing some guys will be moving up if weights stay the same. Not sure when all the details come out or when the proposed rules take effect.

I think he could make 57kg unless Moug is right. Still, Cory is a light 33. He would have a tough time with Streibler

I don't know what all the proposed rules changes are but Metcalf made reference to the 2 hr weigh in during his Skype interview with Bader when asked if he's done competing. 7:00 mark takes you to that dialogue.

If the weights remain the same I doubt Streibler makes his World Champ weight either. Time will tell I suppose.

I think same day weigh ins are good for the US wrestlers in general.

Great interview. You can tell that Clark really had to do some mental work to get over his injury. Seems like he is in a place mentally that few ever get too. Hope he can keep that mindset with his training and competing going forward.

Yes he will. Clark will be tough as hell with his gut wrench and toughness once he returns. 2 hour weigh-ins would help Gman against guys like Garrett and Tomato.

Adding some muscle might help CC against the quick powerful guys. He did not have an easy time defending against Brewer's and Garrett's power double leg attacks his previous 2 years in the NCAA finals.
