She makes getting top flight recruits her mission and the ones she doesn't get seem to come back to the team for the training ( Like Blades) and then she is CONSTANTLY signing the best recruits and stockpiling talented wrestlers at the weights she needs. Is it the new facility ? What is her draw?? Perhaps it is the 1st Big Ten team that is drawing the recruits ?? She isn't banking on her Team's storied history since they haven't had a history yet. Just seems every time we get positive recruiting notes they are for the Lady Hawks and that is great ....but maybe we get some solid news tossed our way ?? This is NOT a knock on her or her team it is more of an envy post , I guess.

Ill give him a head start:

Step 1- Be the only game in town.
Step 2- See step 1.

🤣🤣come on it’s not like there’s much competition out there, but if gets you excited cool

We aren't just the only B10 team, we are the only P5 school period and one of very few D1. It's certainly going to be fun to see how many titles they can rack up over the next decade (and beyond if no other big school joins the party) but the program itself was basically born on third base with a wild pitcher on the mound at that. Last season was probably the closest challenge they'll have just because of injuries at 136 to both our top wrestlers second semester and North Central bringing back a couple fifth year Covid wrestlers ranked top 3 at semester to take the lead "on paper" and Iowa still pulled it out. Now they'll have more depth going forward at every weight and hopefully avoid that bad luck too. But the program kind of sells itself being the only D1 power school and one of the few historically elite at that. The men's history and fan base that cares is a huge part of the team even existing and a huge recruiting advantage that puts them in kind of unparalled territory. Even the women's hockey teams didn't have the same advantage because there were several powerhouse teams adding them all at the same time, not a huge head start like Iowa has for women's wrestling.

It isn’t being the only game in town.

It is having the best lower weight coach in the game. It is having the best Greco coach in the US.

It is also having the best all around coach.

And those are three different people.

Well, if there were more women’s wrestling teams, there would be more competition for recruits. But there’s not.

I think we were able to put together an elite staff though because we were the only game in town, or certainly the biggest name. We had the pick of the litter from day one starting the program and candidates that no other school would even be able to interview. If they had really wanted to be college coaches they'd probably have already been doing that elsewhere. Any of them could've been head coach at virtually any other school if they'd have even shown interest. Instead, Iowa gave them an opportunity where it'd be worthwhile to leave National teams and coach college. In some cases that'd be viewed as a step down, but because we are "Iowa" with such a groundbreaking opportunity it was worth making the switch. So while I agree they are a big draw for recruiting the elite, I think it just further illustrates the case of Iowa having such a unique advantage compared to all the other schools.

With no more Sunkist Kids that is basically true.

Still have many of the top girls going places other than Iowa. None of our lower weight wrestlers have been able to beat Jimenez…when she was in High School and ours were in college. She is going to Lehigh.

In fact Iowa did not get one of the 4 seniors ranked in top 11 P4P in high school….only three of the 15 ranked in the top 25.

Now granted adding Olympians and World silver medalists as transfers is another level of recruiting.

I do think Chun gets most of who she wants though, and that has very little to do with rankings.

Do you think Iowa being the only major school pouring money into women’s wrestling had anything to do with the jobs they accepted or nah.

Absolutely believe that.

Absolutely believe that is the difference.

Sterling was ranked 8th at 106 coming out of high school. Emilie was ranked 10th at 106. (Brianna was ranked 1st at 100).

Ava was ranked 15th at 112.

10th ranked and 15th ranked (at their weight class…not P4P) become National College Champions 2 years later in their first opportunity.

💯 you guys have bragging rights, we would be too if it was our program! They definitely have a good chance of beating 34, and the number will be what everyone EVENTUALLY looks at good for them (the team and school).

Ps. I do hope we get a team and romp you guys though! 😋
