Coworkers who can't handle work stress

Anyone have the pleasure of have coworkers who freak out of break down any time works stress ratchets up a bit? A coworker basically starts hyperventilating any time something is asked that might have a tight deadline or different than whatever routine she is already in.

I'm all for being accommodating, trying to emphasize, etc but I'm in starting to think folks are being too coddled in the workplace.

(I know, most people here have built their own multi-billion dollar businesses and don't deal with coworkers)

After a recent life experience, I now believe this could just be a narcissist seeking attention as a means of controlling others. It's just another way to create drama, invoking a response from others.

Tell them it's part of the job, and if they think it's too much maybe consider a change. Tough love. Don't let them control. Even if they aren't narcissists, it not bad advice.
 
No hyperventilating but they shut down, act like they don’t see things or play dumb. Hard to believe no one else sees it or have held their position this long. Can’t say anything because not worth being that guy, but at times makes the group look bad.

It’s work!

To answer your question OP, no, people like that tend to gravitate away from me, maybe it's the hair, I don't find myself having to deal with people like that.

I used to be in the 'you don't know what they're dealing with' camp but, to your point, everyone is dealing with something so let's work to get shit done.

Let's be honest, we all have a reputation.


If "sara" shows up every day and kicks ass, and some random project beats the hell out of her, Sara is good shit and the team will support her.


If "xavier" cant make it through a day without crying in the pisser, the team doesn't care, he needs to go.

Most "people" here, are the cause of their co-workers' stress!! While their CWs are busting their asses, the shut-ins of HROT are sitting here all ****ing day posting and toasting like the slack dicks they are!!

Took a minute from watching the Minneapolis crime watch feed, did ya?
 
And it’s regular shit that breaks them down, it’s not like the requests are unreasonable. Clear off their calendars, don’t respond to messages and emails in timely fashion.
 
I have an employee, everyday is a crisis for them. We aren't saving lives here, its just normal work. But, everything is a crisis. Always.

I get an email- I am copied- it is not urgent. I get an IM with a screenshot OF THE EMAIL from that person - within seconds with some variation of panic

All I can think is they used to work in customer service/retail- and that mindset won't leave?

I tend to get my and other’s stuff done without too much trouble amongst all of the distractions that come with the gig. Some can’t handle multitasking as the job demands.

I don’t take smoke or walk breaks, most of the time don’t take daily or lunch breaks but I do surf.

In the real world the team should be able to speak to the leader and discuss each members ability to perform the task at hand.


In the 2024, feelings matter, world, what you should do is go talk to HR about how the work place has become anxious and you feel as though there is underlying hostility being cultured. Those words will make something happen.




Best advice I can give you, costco whiskey is 23.99 for a 1.75

Not disagreeing with you but team harmony is still important and could backfire if we draw those lines. Been on good teams and bad teams, the best ones are when everybody truly gets along.

I have no issues helping and could give you insight to whatever they are working on, but don’t dig when you watch me do it for you.

The best harmony, amongst men, comes with honesty, if the team can openly discuss strength and weaknesses they can use their skills to best accomplish a task.

My understandinf is the OP feels as though there may be a team member taking advantage of other team.members, that immediately goes away in an open floor environment.

My experience is that the older generation in process of retiring will get pissed off when someone does something stupid that leads to more (unnecessary) work for them and they'll bitch about it for a while but get the work done.

Then there's a class of (mostly) younger people who seem stressed out about existence in general and mope/complain about everything constantly. I find that they're also the ones leading to the bitching from my first example, which leads to people being mad at them which leads to the younger employee melting down further and the process repeats itself in a negative feedback loop.

Indeed, sometimes I'm the cause of the break down.

Years back when I was working for Comcast, we were auditing the local branch in a big city. The head of that branch's office was right next to the conference room we were using while we were there. The audit wasn't going well for him, and before we finished, he retreated into his office, kept the door closed, and stopped responding to us. None of us had ever seen that before. We knew he was in there, he just shut down and stopped communicating with us - I guess he was hoping we'd just give up and leave. I wasn't around the for aftermath of that, but I'd be surprised if he wasn't demoted/reassigned.
 
I don’t see employees sticking with companies for long periods of time like many use to.

Leadership needs to realize this new reality and stop doing one-off things or customizing procedures and/or computer code for small segments. Eventually over time the people that did it will leave and nobody left will know all the stupid little shit done to make people/customers happy for one day.

Keeping it generic will also help companies integrate with AI much faster.

I kind of chuckle at the coworkers who show no empathy towards other staff when they get dumped on, but as soon as something negative happens to them or work gets thrown on their plate they have a fit about it and bitch to everyone who will listen.

Getting dumped on is different than the scope of your job responsibilities. There are ways to share the load if it’s called for….it’s where the honesty can be a factor.
