This has been making the rounds on the internet the last couple of days. It started with this blogger who said that the Gazette posted pictures of mug shots of 4 black men who were arrested for burglary in Coralville. The blogger was pissed because just a day later the gazette posted pictures if the 3 wrestlers who were arrested in Marion. Instead of using mug shots they used their wrestling photos of them in suits and ties. Obviously this is just another example of racism in the media (according to the blogger anyway). The blacks were made to look like hardened criminals and the white kids were made out to look like good old boys.

Never mind the facts. Such as the 4 black guys were arrested in Johnson county and the 3 wrestlers were arrested in Linn county. Johnson county posts the mug shots online and anyone can get them. So the paper had them available. Linn county you have to put in a request for the mugshots, which can take a while to get. So the paper used the photos from the university, which you can get online. Once the Gazette got the mug shots they switched the photos. Also never mind that the Gazette uses the sports photos for black athletes also when they get arrested.

The blogger lies when he says the paper only changed the photos to mug shots after social media reacted. I know for a fact I saw them the next day after the original article was posted (which the gazette also claims) as we were discussing it at work. Of course other websites have picked up this blogger's rant and ran with it.
