Crazy stat of the night - yards per play

That is interesting and a bit surprising.

BUT...the real telling stats are:

First Downs: Penn State 29 Iowa 11
Total Yards: Penn State 579 Iowa 273

It's a small miracle Iowa was in position to win the game at the very end when you look at those stats. And it makes 21-19 a little more palatable, even though it's heartbreaking to lose the way Iowa did.

I must be miscalculating.

Crazy game.

LIONS - 99 plays, 579 yds, = 5.85 yds/play
HAWKS- 45 plays, 273 yds, = 6.07 yds/play

I think the last paragraph almost goes without saying and why I don't think too many fans hang their heads about this one. At least not more than several i can think of in recent memory. We really had no business being in that game.

13 of their 45 plays were ran between the yard line and 20 yard line. They gained only 32 yards on those plays.

The first half field position was unbelievable. Our offense didn't drive over the 50 yard line until the 3rd quarter. Excluding the interception return that we scored off, the other 6 drives in the first half averaged starting at the 15 yard line. Ferentz knows that turnovers that deep in our own territory will kill us in a game like that, hence the ultra conservative play calling in the first half. The first drive that we got good field position we scored on the very first play. The game could have been very different if we were able to flip field position on them at all in the first half.

Their defense was the one that gave up two or three big plays. Ours didn't give up any that I can remember if you remove the play where Barkley should have been called down. That's impressive considering they were the one with the most explosive offense in the conference.
