Interesting read folks about the BIG having only one protected East-West football rivalry. Care to guess who these two powerhouses who the fans clamor to see are? Surely it's got to include Michigan, tOSU, PSU, Nebraska or MSU, Iowa and Wisconsin right? I mean Ohio State has that stupid turtle game with Illinois and Iowa has had some very good games with PSU.

Heck Michigan an Nebraska have that whole 1997 title debate going. Michigan State and Wisconsin vs Iowa and Nebraska in any matchup you want. Surely these are one of those protected games....no.

The game picked is.......Purdue vs Indiana!!!!!! I know this is a classic regional rivalry and with the number of league teams and an uneven amount of conference games something must get cut. So I relent and eagerly await the start of the season and who knows this may be the BIG title game.

They're in the same state...
If MSU and MI were in different divisions.....I bet they'd still be playing every year too

I understand, I just wonder why they didn't keep them both in the east and switch out a Northwestern but then geography came into play. The eastern most western statend and time zones and legends and leaders to east and west. Why does the Earth rotate on it's axis at a tilt so the moon and California drift further away each year........boom

I can't wait until football season. This odd sport of kicking around a white ball with your uh...foot is foreign to me. Then I see a bunch of men hitting a defenseless little white ball with a stick when all it wants to do is go home...barbaric.

As mentioned they are in state rivals. There was a clamoring to have Michigan State in the West rather than Purdue, and that definitely would have helped with the perception of "imbalance" between the 2 divisions. But it also would have meant MSU/Michigan would have been the protected rivalry, and that would mean every other team in the west gets Michigan on their schedule less often as they would only have 2 cross over games rather than 3. I don't think many teams in the West are raising too much of a fuss about getting Indiana less often.

I have no problem with it at all. zero. If the B1G expands to 16 teams, maybe they can wind up in the same division, but until then I am perfectly fine with them being allowed to play every year.

Every west team has an "east rival" though. We get PSU, Neb gets OSU etc.
So, they don't have to be in the same division.....

Hiking up in big sky, mt over the 4th. Out on a trail and see a guy with a Purdue shirt. Honestly didn't know what to say to rib him since they mean nothing to me. Usually I have some smart ass comment to break the ice when meeting a fellow Big booster but in this case I just kept walking. Not sure how to politely insult those folks?

You guys sure have a good.....women's basketball team? Engineering program? Drew Brees!

Probably for the same reason the Iowa schools have a protected game. It's the game of the year!

To whom? Just kidding my sarcasm meter works just fine. I guess just because 99 percent of fans don't see it as a rivalry that doesn't mean those two canvases don't.

I find it funny but respectable how dyed in the wool the BIG conference is. I would question Hawk fans about if they would be upset at dropping Iowa State as an annual rivalry game, but I know it would just be about 7 to 3 in favor so no point there. My personal view is Iowa/Iowa State is good for the state but I don't live in the state.

Iowa is by far a superior football program but I wager most of the players love that game unlike any other.
