Crystal Mangum just admitted after 18 years that she made up the rape allegation against the 3 Duke Lacrosse players.

I think if you make up a false accusation like this you should bear the penalty that the accused would bear if guilty.

So assuming she did manufacture the whole thing I think she should do the time as if she was the rapist. And then she should have to pay civil penalties for the life-long harm she inflicted (reputation, legal fees, lost time, etc).

No.

There has to be stiff penalties so others never consider doing this... Pure evil

And 18 years ago we all knew she made it up.
The whole thing was a case of a drug addict gaming the system and the system gaming a drug addict. She used the cops to try to keep custody of her kid and the cops, namely Mike Nifong, used her to get elected to District Attorney. Everything about the investigation was handled incorrectly. From when she was shown only pictures of the lacrosse team to Nifong conspiring with the lab to withhold exculpatory evidence from the defense. Of the many miscarriages of justice in this case, the fact that Nifong only spent one day in jail might be the most egregious.

Good on her for admitting it, for herself and others.

One of my former partners' sons was one of the "top 3" guys that got wrapped up in that. A terrible terrible time for him, that no one should wish on anyone. Kudos to the parents for putting everything they had into their sons' defenses. A good friend who is a formidable defense lawyer represented another of them.

As a special parting gift, my former partner got a nice case of stress-induced diabetes from the affair to take with him the rest of his life. Thankfully, both he and his son have moved on and are doing quite well.

Good idea. Execute all people that have ever lied or embellished about being a victim in frivolous lawsuits.

Can we start at the top and work down to sex workers? That seems to be a more effective path towards ensuring justice.
This wasn't a lawsuit. It was a criminal trial that potentially could have sent three innocent men to pound-me-in-the-a$$ prison. Mangum and Nifong deserved lengthy prison terms for what they did.

Give it the death penalty…
lol. Seems reasonable ….

For the POS DA that railroaded these kids. Scumbag maggot knew this was BS from the drop and wanted to make a name. He is the problem here, not this attention seeking dirtball who is just following the lead of our celebrities in wanting to be a star. It’s the real pandemic of our time.

Why not? Did it not ruin three lives...maybe more?

One person here had the power to assess her obvious lies as such and instead of being judicious and doing the right thing, he chose to use this girl to create a platform for himself and he ruined all the lives. He has since served brief jail time and been disbarred and put out to pasture because his peers don’t want the integrity of their profession and its production to be compromised by his kind.

OK? I said harsh punishment was a good idea, and was just adding that getting people of consequence on the same types of lying to enrich yourself/destroy others would be more effective in showing this behavior isn't tolerated.

Nobody is going to give a sh!t that a stripper in prison for killing their boyfriend stays in prison.

Weak echoes of Emmitt Till and Carolyn Bryant Donham—a rhyme, not a repeat.

I’m going to go meta and say that this highlights the absolute critical necessity of due process in our society, and I am using it as a lens to examine and edit my more ghoulish thoughts about the Brian Thompson murder. We need due process. It is imperfect, but it reduces harm. Due process worked for David Evans, Collin Finnerty, and Reade Seligmann, who were spared from humanity’s worst impulses—they thankfully had the privilege of being subject to due process and they enjoyed support networks that ensured it would work justly.

It did not work for Emmitt Till who held little privilege in his day.

I am still ruminating on the failures of due process in the Brian Thompson murder. Accused and executed by a vigilante, he enjoyed no benefit of due process, although his killer will.

The motive for the murder arguably arises from the idea that due process has failed the American healthcare consumer. We need to always strive to be better. Due process must work for all.

If you jailed every jerkoff that lies to the police about being a victim, we would have nowhere to put all the Venezuelans you are clamoring to deport.

People lie about being a victim all the time. But DAs don’t conspire with labs to withhold exculpatory evidence in an attempt to defraud the state and ruin lives to make names for themselves.

This girls claims would have never been made public if not for this POS.

Assuming she is dirt poor they should still confiscate a portion of her social security and give it to the victims.

What a bitch. Law enforcement should also pay a severe penalty.

The lie started with her and doesn't need to have been prosecuted to ruin lives. The lie by itself damaged those boys without prosecuting anything.

I know there was a guy accused of raping a girl when I was in college that was never prosecuted but his life was effectively done at that college. Maybe he did it. I have no way to know but I do know that everyone treated him like a pariah including the college. He was banned from dorms and cafeterias on campus and the due process afforded him on that decision was the sole decision of a university administrator. He left college and I wasn't friends with him so no idea where he went. I doubt it was anywhere good next and may have affected the rest of his life. Maybe he did it but he sure wasn't afforded any due process and wasn't prosecuted. Immediate presumed guilt and ostracized out.of school.

But she is black and made her false accusations against white guys, so she needs to be forgiven because her intentions were good, right Silberman?

Call me old fashioned but I start placing blame at the person who falsely accuses someone.

Holy shit. If your child tells you a neighbor is peaking in his window at night, and you go look, and there is nothing there. But he insists, so you set up cameras to prove there is nobody, but instead of showing him the proof and getting him to back off the claim, you tell everyone in your hood you think the kid is telling the truth here and you think you can prove it. Who is to blame for the reputation damage of that neighbor, you or your child?

Because that’s pretty much what happened here.

lol. How about I call you a dumbass? The guy was disbarred and did jail time. He ****ing conspired with the lab to bury DNA evidence that exonerated the accused. He had all the power and knowingly wielded it against innocent people because he was a media whore and wanted to use it as an opportunity to get famous.

The UHC assassin sure had a lot of different colored backpacks for his trip.

It did lasting damage to the university and the lacrosse brand as well.
