Kirk said that d-line was one area where true freshmen had a realistic chance to contribute this season. That surprised me considering the depth that most of us thought we had there. Are we not as good along the line as expected or are the freshmen really that good?

Maybe Kirk is thinking about the 4 games that he can "spend" ... and how our young DTs actually have some size that might be able to help our depth in the middle?

But, otherwise I think you're right, it's odd to think that our TR FR D-linemen could play. Kirk's standard line is that he always says that guys have a better chance to play the further they are away from the football.

Tyler Linderbaum is looking good.

Nice contribution ... thanks for sharing!

Interesting trio to be catching Ferentz's attention. Brents was injured for the first part of his SR year ... so a lot of folks didn't get to fully see what he could offer. But he's a really talented guy who is long and lean ... the same sort of skill-set that Josh Jackson translated to a pretty big NFL payday!

Linderbaum had a good Army-All-American showing ... but he's still been flying a bit under the radar.

Benson won his state's gatorade athlete of the year ... to little fanfare too. A talented kid who likely feels like he has something to prove.

It's pretty cool hearing of the new names that are emerging!

Developing DL depth will pay dividends in B1G play in Oct. and Nov. games in particular 3rd and 4th quarters. As far as freshmen starting farther from the ball that's probably true in most cases because the physicality of line play in B1G is too much for most freshmen to handle. I think the Hawks recruiting on the DL for the last few years has been excellant and it seems like every couple years we have DL freshmen that gives the defense valuable PT

The intriguing thing is that I think that if you would have asked any of us at any time prior at what position we potentially have the best depth ... many folks would say that we have pretty good depth on the DL.

However, you don't have to look very far down the road to see that we have a good number of SRs and JRs on the DL ... thus, the sooner we can get young guys up to speed in order to take over ... yeah, that would be a good thing!

DL is looking better than I thought. Matt Nelson is powerful, Shannon can play this year, Golston and Simon bring strength and speed and the regulars I haven't mentioned will do well.

Above average to great DL have been a mainstay at The University of Iowa since Coach Fry and Coach Brashier. KF and NP and now PP have followed the blueprint. We are the Bullies of The Big Ten.

From most of what I've read - it sounds like Linderbaum might be more likely to play as a TR FR at DT than Shannon. Shannon has great push and is a powerful dude ... but it still sounds like Doyle has a lot of work to do with the young man to re-sculpt him a bit.

All the same - having Golston, Brincks, and Linderbaum to add to the mix at DT ... that could definitely come in handy ... particularly against NIU since we'll be down 2 top guys in Lattimore and Reiff.

Agree, but Shannon is pretty chubby and needs to be “Doyleized” for a year so me thinks he will redshirt and get rid of the baby fat and turn it into muscles
