Tweaked a knee in practice and won't play tonight. Makes it even more important for Uhl to bring it tonight.

That sucks if true. We are going to need someone to step up.

The glaring issue tonight was Ellingson, Uhl, and even Utoff struggled to get their shot off vs athletic tough defenders. I hope we can find someone who can step up outside of JOK, because he is a very Hit and miss player.

That is concerning. Uhl showed signs of life tonight. Hopefully he keeps it going and helps fill the void.

Fran quoted as saying, "He's talked to his mother... decisions need to be made." Some speculation here, but sounds like surgery is a consideration. A medical redshirt would benefit Jones' development.

Hasn't Jones already had a redshirt year?

We'd be looking for a Jess Settles type sixth year under the hardship waiver rules. My attitude is do what it takes to have the best knee to last a lifetime, be a student, and worry about an extra year on the court later.

Medical redshirt is different than the regular redshirt. He could be granted a medical redshirt if it is clear that the injury kept him out and he hadn't played in more than a certain number of games before the injury. I am not sure what the max number of games you can play, but I am pretty sure that 6 is below that limit.

Here are the details of a Hardship waiver from the NCAA regs. Sounds like they might apply to Dale Jones' situation:

12.8.4 Hardship Waiver. A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference or the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for reasons of “hardship.” Hardship is defined as an incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 11/1/01, 4/3/02, 8/8/02, 3/10/04, 5/11/05, 8/4/05, 4/26/07, 9/18/07, 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08, 4/24/08, 7/31/14)
(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any two-year or four-year collegiate institutions or occurs after the first day of classes in the student-athlete’s senior year in high school;
(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the first competition of the second half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (see Bylaw 12.8.4.3.4) and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season;
(c) In team sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the institution’s scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only scheduled or completed competition against outside participants during the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. Dates of competition that are exempted (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in the United States) from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition shall count toward the number of contests or dates in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in the season, except for scrimmages and exhibition contests that are specifically identified as such in the sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations. Scrimmages and exhibition contests that are not exempted from the maximum permissible number of contests or dates of competition may be excluded from the calculation only if they are identified as such in the sport’s Bylaw 17 playing and practice season regulations; and
(d) In individual sports, the injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than three dates of competition or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the maximum permissible number of dates of competition as set forth in Bylaw 17 plus one date for a conference championship (e.g., gymnastics: 13+1=14, wrestling: 16+1=17), regardless of whether the team participates in the conference championship, provided the institution is a member of a conference and the conference holds a championship event in the applicable sport. Dates of competition that are exempted per Bylaw 17 (e.g., alumni contests, foreign team in the United States) from the maximum permissible number of dates of competition do not count toward the number of dates in which the student-athlete has participated.

My guess is the decision is with Dale & his family..surgery could end his year. No surgery could possibly allow him to come back at some point - but at what effectiveness? I'm speculating we will not see Dale the rest of the year but that's just a guess.

Very unfortunate.

This 100%. As fans, there can be a tendency to forget that the players will have a life beyond basketball because the program always continues (well... until one of the blue bloods cheats... then the next little guy to get caught will have their program handed the death penalty).

Hopefully we receive good news on the medical front for Jones and this will be a non-issue. If it is an issue, all the best in a full recovery; Hawkeye Nation will still be there for you, Dale!

Having Jones for two years with Cook, Wagner, Pemsl, Kriener, Baer and Uhl would give us a very solid front court. With Jok at the three next year if Ellingson, Hutton, Moss, Fleming, Williams, & Bohanan are ready to contribute we should grow into a competitive team. It would have the athletes to play exciting ball. Now they'll need to develop a bunch this year.

Unfortunate.
I liked his ability to get off a 3 when needed. Also, he offered a decent rebounding presence.

Coach McCaffery just confirmed that Jones is likely gone for the season.
I wonder what the specific injury is? If it was a ligament tear I would think it would have been mentioned by now. Perhaps a severe sprain?

Assuming a medical redshirt is granted, counts against the scholarship limit, and IA/Jones pursues; that means we'd have no rides left for 2017 as it stands now.

Of course, it's very possible somebody leaves the team or the McCaffreys choose to have Conner go the preferred walk-on route. If neither of those scenarios play out, that means IA would get the one extra ride in 2018 to go along with Weiskamp as the only current available scholarship.

The thing is, IA is in on some good 2017 recruits - most notably Iowa City native now in IN Jack Nunge who reportedly grew up / still is a big Hawk fan. See this tweet...

2017 Castle (IN) 6-11 PF Jack Nunge (@jnunge30) will be a nationally known name sooner rather than later. 28 pts 12 rebs 6 blks tonight.

Lots of interesting scenarios / choices ahead...

This was the exact reason Doug McDermott gave up his ride his final year at Creighton because Grant Gibbs was granted a 6th year. Perhaps Fran would do that with Connor for a season if Jones does indeed get a 6th year. However, I think its inevitable someone will depart before this becomes an issue.

He certainly deserves one but he came to Iowa because he loves being a Hawkeye. He wont leave if he doesn't get one.

hawk-i-bob - I saw a similar, definitively stated post of yours in another thread. Are you a family member and/or know the family by chance?

P.S. I understand if you don't feel comfortable answering.
P.S.S. He's a heck of a player and seems like a great teammate.

His head coach at Bettendorf is my nephew.

I can tell you that Baer was thrilled to become a walk-on. The young man is a Hawkeye. I do hope there is a opening for him at some point but if not he will wear his spot on the team with Hawkeye pride & will contribute make no mistake about that.

The guy just has it. Always has. No one can tell him he cant play. Its not arrogance either. He has taken his natural talent and added to it with hard work. Tremendous BB IQ.

Credit goes to his high school coach for his encouragement. And to his family for supporting his dream to play for the Hawkeyes.

It's funny how many people wanted to argue with me that it was a potential benefit to be able to have Frans kids be walkons.

Baer provided quality minutes today. He'll need to play more minutes than planned with Dale Jones out. That shooting is not walk on kind of play to be sure.

Thanks hawk-i-bob, good information. Kudos to your nephew for his influence. Baer sounds like a quality young man that has a good family support system. That's important.

Argh!!! So unfortunate for Dale! Not to mention the team needs his abilities, his ouside shooting and overall game.

I hope Jones gets the medical hardship if it comes to that. Also hope Baer gets a scholarship if he proves he contribute during the conference part of the season. Being short on scholarships is the least of my concerns. If a big time recruit wants to come to Iowa then Fran will figure out a way to him here. If every single one of the current players stays for their full eligibility period then that is a good thing also...next year the team will be considered very young/inexperienced but 2-3 years down the road we could be loaded up with talented, developed players. Somebody, however, will probably see the writing on the wall as far as playing time goes and look for a different opportunity. That happens all the time in just about every program. I would only worry if a player who does get significant time decides to transfer, ala the Lick years.

Assuming he gets a 6th year, won't he be about 24 or so by the time he's a senior?

It's funny how many people wanted to argue with me that it was a potential benefit to be able to have Frans kids be walkons.

That's because the belief or expectation that Fran's kids will be walk-ons during their entire career at Iowa is wishful thinking and video game type mentality except for an extraordinary/temporary circumstance. In other words maybe one season to accommodate a special circumstance like Dale getting a 6th year. If I had to bet, Connor won't be a walk-on at all, but if he is, it won't last for more than one year.

I think we'll see when the season is finished, it's nearly impossible to keep 13 players happy, let alone 14 in our case with Baer. I would be shocked if there wasn't one and perhaps even two transfers between now and the start of next season (no inside info, but we are overcrowded at the off guard spot for instance and can't help but think one is going to look for an opportunity elsewhere). In your scenario, we could potentially have 15 scholarship worthy players in 2017 if Jones is granted a 6th year, Baer is still around and McCaffery comes in technically as a walkon to accommodate the roster. There just isn't enough playing time to go around and you're setting yourself up for mass defections. There is no need to have that many players, it will be impossible for Fran to manage and has a better chance of fracturing the chemistry of the team than it does benefiting it on the court in my opinion.

Thanks. I agree, the kid has "it" and you can tell he has really put the work into his game to become a 3 point shooter. I fully expect he will be a starter before he leaves Iowa, probably sooner rather than later. Kids like him make everyone else play harder and look better. I'll be shocked if he isn't on scholarship next year (if someone leaves), or the year after at the latest.
