Dan Dennis: Wild Man episode 1

DD said they would have to do some serious editing because Gilman was kicking his ass. I know Gilman and the coaches have their plan, but still wish he was competing this weekend form a selfish perspective.

THAT WAS AWESOME!!! I watched it 2x already. Learned a ton about Daniel and also how much TnT mean to those guys. I thought Tom looked/sounded like a coach that every parent would want to have coach their sons. What a great man who cares beyond just the wrestling mat.

Flo better watch out.. People are going to start accusing them of recruiting for The Hawks!

My guess is when Flo watched 42,000 fans show up for a wrestling dual their marketing director decided some additional pro Iowa content might snag some subscriptions. Maybe they are coming around. Good for them

worked for me

Love the "Minnesota Trademark", "Minnesota Rule" quotes. Can we encourage Ironside to print some T-Shirts? I'm buy'in it!
Was Dennis's knee to the head counter takedown an Iowa Trademark, then? Ness is just lucky that they didn't have concussion protocol back then or he may not have been allowed to continue.

Dung up or not this is exactly why the current rule is one of the best rules the ncaa has implemented in some time. Dennis could have went both up or down and this match dynamic is totally different.

I must say that I have never thought of that as a Minny trademark. Talk about negative recruiting. I am surprised that they kept it in the documentary.

As for the rest of the content of the video - Dennis seems like the kind of person folk legends or super heroes are made of. Paul Bunyon, Pecos Bill, Spiderman you name it.

Is there any way to buy the DVDs - or is it cheaper just to subscribe for 1 month and watch all the content?

This cracks me up. Flo has been doing docs on Iowa since they began the pro series(long before I was there). In fact, their very first one was about Iowa.

They have continued to do pieces on Iowa frequently over the years. Even before Terry/Dennis Iowa was by far the most frequently covered team in the documentary sense.

Sorry for crap post wish i xould prioritize $ better. Dans an animal!!wish i could watch this :-(.... lol Transcribes.....

Dan Dennis wildman brought too you by Flo.

It was great as usual. I've said before the brands, HWC and the iowa marketing people don't get enough credit for the access they give. They also have compelling stories to tell which is hard to get people on board to tell and live with the chance of criticism.

Wish other programs gave us "stars" to root for. Regardless of school colors stories like dennis s is what moves the needle for this sport.

For every Imar dake dt sanderson.......there are 100 Brody grothus, jim English dan dennis types that don't get their story told. But it is those guys -which are probably more us guys- that keep us coming back to the sport we love.

GREAT video btw. Can't wait for part two. How can you not love this guy? He's freaking awesome.

Can someone expand on what these taglines are in reference to?
During the Wild Man video, Tom is talking about the National Championship match with Ness, he states that Dennis gets a take down to ice the match, and that Ness calls injury time right after the TD. Brands says that was a Minnesota Trademark (calling for injury time to give them a breather and get better position) and is why they changed the rule to give the non-injured wrestler his choice of position when the match resumes, he referred to it as the "Minnesota Rule".

Right after the take down, Dennis has Ness flat and probably could have rode him and wore him down a little, but after the time out, a well rested Ness gets to go back on all fours in the down position and is able to quickly escape.

For sure a fake injury, but he played it well and won the match.

Okay, I recall the sequence of events, just wanted to make sure I was reading the Tom Brands tea leaves correctly. Thanks

After that stunt, I have had no respect for Ness as a wrestler. Pure BS. I my mind he flat out cheated.

Wow! And I thought Hawkeye fans were supposed to be informed. Evidently, you are the only college wrestling fans not to have seen the knee to the head take down. I always thought that it was accidental, but now that Brands is pretending that it didn't happen it must have been coached. Helps to explain how Dennis was able to stay in the match after being drilled 8-4 during the season and 9-3 just two weeks earlier.

Ok...I'll play with you Mr Big Gopher Fan Conhusker guy...Ness shoots in on Dennis head first and hits Dennis in the knee as he is about to sprawl. Dennis goes behind and Ness raises his hand in injury. Now, Ness gets a nice lunger and I don't know if he was hurting or not but I do know that when they blew the whistle again, Ness's reaction time and energy were pretty dang good. He escaped in less than five seconds. Not bad for a guy whose bell was just rung a minute earlier.

Hence why I used "additional". I wish more of your FRL content made me crack up. Then you guys would really be on to something. Less crying, more comedy!

Nice OpEd Jammenz, I couldn't find the video but here's basically equivalent, Ness worthy, soccer flops:

I feel as bad as anyone for Dennis. His underdog story was so compelling, it had to be hard not to root for him even if you hated Iowa. With that said, I watched the replay a bunch of times right after the injury timeout and have to say it looked legit to me. When Ness's head hit Dennis's knee his legs went rubbery. Because he was able to go hard later in no way means he didn't get his bell rung. Now I won't argue that Minnesota didn't use the injury t o as well as anyone. I just don't think it was the case in that match. Dennis out wrestled Ness for 6:55 of that match and I truly wish he had some last second Darrion Caldwell in his DNA. Sadly, he didn't. If he would have just ran and did a flip with those last few seconds left, he would be a champ right now and Varner would have won the Hodge!

Ness is one of the highest character guys there is in wrestling. He took a knee to the face. These posts are sarcastic right?

Pyles-- enough of that bullshit-- we dont want facts to get in the way of some good message forum banter. Is more fun when we say Flo hates Iowa or Willy is telling recruits to go to PSU--- even if its not true.

It would have fallen under concussion protocol most likely.

I also like how Brands says that match is what caused the rule change. The higher ups were so appalled that they made the rule change 4 years later?! Ha Good one Tom.

Thats not what he said, you should re-watch.

"I am convinced that is one of the reasons why when you call injury time you get choice now. I call it the Minnesota Rule."

I stand by my statement.[/QUOTE
You sure about that, cause you said that Brands said the rule change was because of that match and it took for years to change the rule. What Brands is referring to is that fact that Minnesota had been faking injury time for years and because of it the NCAA finally said no more getting away with this and changed the rule.

So we are disagreeing as far as what "that" is referring to in Tom's statement. I understood it to be the Ness match, you understood it to be MN's apparent long lineage of false injuries(Ness match included). Both could be correct, IDK.

What "fake injury timeouts" occurred for Minnesota after the Ness finals match and prior to the rule change? I would imagine there must be plenty for you to refute my statement of a rule change occuring 4 years later. Without that, I can't help but laugh when this rule is associated to MN by Tom.
