As a Hawkeye I hate to see any good player leave for selfish reasons of being a hawk fan as of course I want all the good players to stay.. but I am a bit on the teeter totter with his decision.. do I think it’s a good move for the moment? Yes, of course a possible 4 million to 7 million contract or go back to the grind and back to school and risk a season or career ending knee injury.. I wish though he would of took an insurance plan maybe Lloyd’s of London policy for 5 million in case he injured himself that he couldn’t ever play God forbid.. however it seems like he’s close to getting his degree anyways but another year in college football can’t hurt and help him get better but I will stand by him as a great Hawk like Jackson ... I respect their decisions but wish they would of came back!

Quick question, let’s say Daniels or Jackson didn’t sign with an agent could they withdraw their name from the draft by Jan 15 and still come back to play at Iowa?

I'm happy for the young men. Let them be 2 new examples to recruits why it is such an advantage to go play football at Iowa. Let them be 2 new ambassadors of the Hawk program in the NFL. Both guys clearly love and appreciate the Hawks.

Let them be successful ... let them enrich themselves. Down the road ... it will continue to possibly enrich our program! And, in the long term ... that is what we all want anyhow!

I believe the answer to your question is yes, the can explore their options and worth and either declare or remain with the school. Not exactly sure what the process is but that is the gist of it.

With what we know about CTE; any prospect projected to go that early that decides to come back is making a mistake of epic proportions. How can anyone in their right mind claim that forgoing a mid 7 figure check for a paltry two semesters of tuition in exchange for incurring brain damage is the right move? Once you've got several million guaranteed, take the money so you can quit playing that much earlier to save your brain. Playing longer for free when you can be paid for that massive sacrifice would be the only bad decision here.

far from a guarantee in my mind, but we'll see. hopefully he gets it!

I'm still PO'ed daniels left....I was looking forward to his cyhawk celebration next year!!

Everybody seems to forget that the Daniels family has a younger brother ( ELLIS) who Iowa has a curious eye out for as another OL. Brother Ellis is thought to be the best athlete of the brothers. I think I read where he is bigger than James at this point in his growth. Best wishes and hope to see the Daniels family return with Ellis to see Kinnick again.

Doing the right thing (encouragement) and staying positive in thoughts and prayers for James (and LeShun and their family) should the Hawkeye fans' concern.

Thank you James and may God be with you on your journey in this life.

Stoops redux. I like it!

Stays would he have been a first round next year?

He could have been an AA first teamer and more likely a finalist, if not winner, of the Rimington Trophy, especially if Stanley could mount a charge to a top 12 team finish and maybe 10 wins+ next year. Accolades and another year of film and pro feedback could have improved his stock value to a mid 1st round.

Every NFL team is looking for the next Dwight Stephenson (all-time NFL legend at center). Iowa has had its share of great centers (and guards) that have graced the NFL rosters (Hilgenberg name is just one family at Iowa). The NFL knows the Ferentz pedigree of OL.

McShay projects him in the early second round, which would be a $7 Million contract.

Honest question...assuming there are 32 draft slots in each round...does anyone know if the draft predictions of these draft experts are constrained to the number of available slots? In other words, if there are 32 available slots in the first round...how many players have been tagged as first rounder? 32? 40? 50? Etc.

It does seem to me that some announcers "over" predict and might describe 40-50 players as potential "first rounders", when only 32 can actually be.

Hence the word potencial first round. I wonder if Kiper or Mcshay had 26 DB's "potencially" going before King last year? I'd bet you or I could spend a week prepping for the draft, and be just about as close in our picks as they are.

I hope he has a long NFL career. Props to James for his time and hard work at Iowa. I'll cheer for him every Sunday.

I havent followed the NFL in years and I guess it shows. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that kid would be a 2nd rounder. Good for him.

Yes, each analyst gives predictions for each round, and only as many as there are picks. So there could be more projected first rounders than available if you include all the analysts, but not when you include "consensus" picks: players predicted to go high by the majority of the top analysts. like Kiper and McShay.

McShay ranks him as the 2nd best center and 35th best player, Kiper ranks him as the 3rd best center and a late 2nd rounder. It's obvious to anyone impartial this is the right decision by Daniels. Centers aren't going to be extremely early picks the vast majority of the time. The risk of coming back to try to improve his stock and getting hurt or having his stock drop far outweigh the potential positive of only improving his stock slightly to the late first round. Centers are almost never picked extremely early in the first round. Those teams have much bigger problems to fix that warrant priority over a position like center.

Pat Elflein from Ohio State was the Rimington award winner last year who many viewed as the best center in the draft and he didn't go until the third round. Same thing could happen to Daniels this year or even next. Elflein probably hurt his stock by coming back for a fifth year, he's been great for the Vikings this year.

It is borderline irresponsible for a guy like this to return if he can go in the first 3 or 4 rounds. Go get paid.

Highly unlikely considering he's a center, leaving as a projected 2nd rounder is a no brainer.

Exactly. People have it in their heads that the only reason to go early is if you are a Top 10 pick. If Daniels is really getting 2nd round grades, that is as high as he will ever be as a center. Virtually no centers get taken in the first round, so there is no upside in terms of earning potential by coming back. If he's taken in the top 2-3 rounds (heck, even 4th or 5th) he didn't "make a mistake." The fan in me wanted him to return. The objective person is saying it's hard to turn down that amount of guaranteed money.

I’m assuming he got a great grade for the nfl.
