Might be stupid, but is that Smith from Stillwater related to the previous Smith's? I'm sure it's been asked and answered before but I do not know. Thanks.

Yes, he is John Smith's son.

I could be wrong, but I would not be shocked if the guy everyone is talking about after this event is Te'Shan Campbell from Penn Hills at 170. He has flown under the radar nationally and I saw his State Title match. The kid is a definite go-er. Just freakish ability on his feet and superior athletic ability. If the kid has college in his future, I would expect to be hearing about him. Stay tuned.

I also saw his match. I agree with his potential. He did get some knee
injury in the tournament and wrestled the finals with 1 1/2 knees and still won convincingly.

Turk did get chosen for the team at 138 and Early was chosen at 145. Turk hurt an ankle during his state finals match and Early is giving his shoulder proper time to heal for junior duals/Fargo so both had to pull out of the Dapper Dan.

I watched the Illinois 3A finals and it sure seemed to me that Early got robbed of a TD on the edge. Quick whistle by the ref maybe. I came away impressed with Barone but just felt like Early could have opened up bit more. Rudy Yates beat Kris Williams rather handily and that kid will certainly be one to watch. Rundell stalled his way to win over Joey Gunther. A kid that I saw wrestle that I came away impressed with was the 3A 195lb champ Timothy Young. Seemed a littler raw but extraordinarily quick for a kid that size. Built a lot like Ed Ruth/David Taylor with his length and wing span. Anyone know any info on that kid, could be a diamond in the rough.

Glad you saw it Thom. The kid's athleticism was really impressive against a nationally ranked opponent and running on a bad wheel. We both live in SWPA and this kid flew under my radar. Not sure if you heard of him. I'll be anxious to see him at the DD.

I must say I look at the main Dapper Dan lineup and am rather disappointed with none of the arguably 3 best seniors there in the Valencia's and Massa.

Snake, It's to good to see Teshan Campbell win a state championship. He has always been very good but in past years would literally hit a wall in the 2nd period. We have all seen wrestlers "gas out" and struggle to finish a match. With Campbell it was on a whole other level. It looked like someone shot him and he would collapse on the mat. He would tough it out and battle back and beat some very good wrestlers (Scalise, UVA recruit) and others. He just couldn't do it consistently. Campbell is also a very good football player and faced the same problems on the field as well.

Over the summer he was diagnosed with severe stomach ulcers and allergies to food colorings and a laundry list of food allergies. His condition is manageable with medicine and a strict diet. This year he has dominated kids who were able to force the match into the 2nd period last year and hope he would hit the wall. Campbell's strength and athleticism is off the charts. He is just now starting to refine his technique and IMO has incredible potential at the D1 level. He has been under the radar and started to get the attention of college recruiters this year.

He is the first kid from his HS to qualify for states in a long time and its good to see that program have some success as well. If there was ever a kid that would benefit from a college room and a red shirt year it is Campbell.

Barone is good. Stays in solid position and is tough to score on. IL places 6 and last season between the the state finals and sectionals the week before he had wrestled each of the other 5 kids with him on the podium to tie breaks.
I feel like you that Early cost himself the match by not opening up earlier. Anybody can be beat in a 45 second go, so if you take a 6 minute match and stare at each other til the last 45 seconds its not the refs fault whatever happens. Early had beaten Barone every time they wrestled until that match including as kids, last season's state semis and Barone's only loss this season a couple weeks before the state series.

Williams is legit and Yates made a statement.

Rundell and Gunther have seen too much of each other in the club practice room over the last couple years for that match to be exciting.

Diamond in the rough is the perfect descriptor for Tim Young. He was a Cadet World Team member last year with insane athleticism for an upper weight. At last year's junior duals he was well on his way to to tech falling 1 of the the Dixon triplets (Oklahoma prized freshmen) before being headlocked. He hasn't had the partners, consistent high level competition and coaching that a lot of the more known guys have had since they were 8 years old. Huge upside! The 3A 220 champ Josh King is another athletic big man that will make any college coach happy but word is he will be playing football.

Bump.........starting on FloPro right about now.

OR NOT! Looks like they had a 2:30 start time and now it looks like 4:00 for the Illinois and 6:00 for the one with Kemerer vs. Thomsen.
