The McCaffrey boys interviewed DB on this week’s show. I was impressed. He gave thoughtful, insightful answers and has a maturity that belies his age. The kid has his head on his shoulders and seems to take seriously what he has to do to succeed. I expect to see a lot of him on the floor this year, maybe along with Aron Ulis. He’s got a bright future.

I posted this in another thread. Might as well here too..

Here are some cool player & coach interviews, if interested.

The Tyler Cook one recently was very good too.

He loves Iowa, but had things not fallen like they did. He wouldn't have been a Hawk.

Florida was the place until Billy Donovan left for the NBA (Their AAU program pretty much sent a steady stream of future NBA guys to Florida from the St. Louis area)
Then Iowa State (yep, he was smitten with Fred Hoiberg) but then he too left for the NBA.
That cemented Iowa who recruited Fat TC :) Fran was in before anyone else... before he was a dunking machine. Other schools came late but he was solid with Iowa.

Interesting comments from the latest podcast. Apparently, not all recruits have an amazing time!

I agree and came away with the same impression….. the young man is mature beyond his years….. I think we lucked out with the Courtney Elridge connection getting this kid

Good listen. Thank you for the suggestion.

Does anyone know why I can't find the T'd Up podcast on the "Podcasts" app on my iPhone? It's not showing up on Spotify for me either. (I had to use the YouTube links above -- thanks for sharing those, @Franisdaman)

Also, is this podcast still under the umbrella of the Gazette?

I hadn't listened to the McCaffery boys since their first episode ... they've improved a lot since their first show. They do a good job of letting their personalities come through, while still keeping the focus on their guest.

It's actually under "The Taco-Bout Network" since Estella's is the lead sponsor and built them a studio to record the podcast.

ok….. I agree but my point was we’re lucky we had the connection…. really not worth splitting hairs over is it? You’re being a little bit pedantic my friend

I don’t think it was LUCK at all. I think it was completely by design.

Sure, the Boston/BABC connection between Eldridge & Dasonte helped some in landing Dasonte but the same BABC connection didn't help land TJ Power.

And I don't think there was ANY luck involved. Instead, Fran, as always, worked his ass off and recruited Dasonte for OVER TWO YEARS before he committed.

Fran offered Dasonte May 10, 2019.

He played one year in High School with Josh Ogundele (also part of the BABC).

IOWA was the FIRST
to offer Dasonte

Dasonte UNOFFICIALLY visited on Oct 20, 2019.

Tues June 1, 2021
was the first day that official visits could occur in well over a year (because of covid). Instead of visiting a new school, Dasonte took his FIRST OFFICIAL VISIT to Iowa the weekend of Thur June 3 - Sat June-5, 2021.

Dasonte committed 4 days later, on June 9, 2021.

The big difference is that Courtney has known Dasonte since he was a baby. I don't think Courtney had a personal connection at all to Power outside of the fact that Courtney played for BABC back in the day.

From what I have seen, the BABC is one big family and are well connected, no matter how far the alumni go back.

The Boston guys, from Left to Right, at last year's Penn State game:
Caleb Middleton (6'10, Class of 2024 PF)
Courtney Eldridge
Dasonte Bowen
TJ Power
Josh Ogundele

So anyone think that maybe Josh O was brought back to help lure Power here as well. Just curious.....

You never know........I wish I could watch practice. The recent video clips appeared to show Josh O in a little better shape, getting up and blocking a shot by high flying Tony P on the baseline......that said, the video clip is so short it's hard to say........But IF (Big IF) he gets in good shape and has dropped some weight, we will get to see what he might be capable of.

Based on what Dasonte had to say about his breakfast work out club, I predict he will be a very good player for us. Guys that put in extra time and effort and have that strong desire to improve develop quickly. I think he will be special and sooner rather than later.

I think Dasonte is going to be that point guard we’ve all been expecting since Fran arrived.

Caught this pod a couple days ago during work but who exactly were the Pat and Connor referring to in regards to the Notre Dame transfer they were sure was coming to Iowa? May have misheard the specifics. Paul Atkinson? I know he was linked to Iowa for a minute.

On July 20, the media had access to the players and to Fran.

Dasonte said he was getting up 700 shots/day with 400 (57%) -500 (71%) makes. He commented about Keegan and how Fran & the Iowa program have opened up some eyes when it comes to what's possible.

Regarding the PG completion, Fran mentioned that Ulis, in his 3rd year, was playing really well and Dasonte is a terrific player. Fran also said Tony and Connor can play the 1 and that he could play Ahron, Dasonte and Tony together.

Fran has not been shy on how good he thinks Dasonte is. On Oct 31 (exhibition game) I think we will see for ourselves.

The little guy's film is great. Looks like a good shooter and quick enough to blow by defenders that get too close to guard the shot. Like a combination of Jordan and Joey T's skills, which of course makes for a very good player.

Forgot, never can count for a lot out of freshmen out of the gate. There is usually a lag time adjusting to live fire play.

Addressing the 2nd highlighted part...

Yes, please. Pretty, pretty please?
