Dayton Racer to tOSU

What does he have left for eligibility? I assume he redshirted at VT and redshirt freshman at Iowa Central. So is he a redshirt sophomore or was he at Iowa Central 2 years?

Huh. Surprised they were even interested. Did not fare well at VT while redshirting. Barely .500 I want to say.

We can always count on SPOONER to tell us the glass-half empty viewpoint. Keeps the fans grounded i suppose.

I guess I don't know what you mean. Results show he's not a major college talent so tOSU surprises me. A UNI or Iowa State wouldn't have.

This may or may not apply to Racer, but it is important to remember that just because you are going somewhere does not mean they were actively recruiting you.

He could have called Tom Ryan and said he wanted to attend...In turn, Tom could have said, "cool, but bring your credit card since you will be paying full tuition as a walk-on"

On the flip side, tOSU seems to be making an effort to stockpile middleweights...Being that he was the JUCO National Champ, maybe they figured they'd take flier on him.

Well maybe he will take out Ryan's son at 157 sure has been a big hole it seems.

Speaking of guys going places that they were not recruited. I am pretty sure Tom Ryan did just that at Iowa.

Well done, sir. Confirmation and refutation with one stroke of the cyber-pen.:)

being in the room with snyder probably helped moore's development a lot. when he was there that is.

According to Ryan, going out to Colorado last summer helped Moore a bunch.
speaking of colorado, the air force academy has a tiny house they put their mascot in to fund-raise at events...

Dayton Racer coming out of HS was ranked higher than Kollin Moore, who was not even a top 100 recruit.

Once upon a time, this kid was ranked in the top 10 P4P rankings. In fact he was ranked as high as #5 in the country in the 2015 class, this was in 2013, immediately following his Minnesota big school State Championship while at Apple Valley. He would never win another State Title and would continue to fall in the rankings following this peak.

1. Massa, Michigan State 1st
2. A. Valencia, California, State 2nd, 1st '12
3. Kolodzik, New Jersey, Prep 1st
4. Benick, Minnesota, State 1st, 1st '12
5. Racer, Minnesota, State 1st
6. Krivus, Pennsylvania, State 1st
7. Jan Johnson, Pennsylvania, State 3rd
8. Z. Valencia, California, State 1st '12
9. Brock, Oklahomas, State 1st
10. Myers, Kentucky, State 1st, '12 1st

Kemerer was #11 after his runner up finish. Hayes came in at #12. Shields was #13 after his 3rd place at States.. Joesph had taken 3rd in the State Tournament as well and was #14. Piccinnini and Martin would start their rise up the rankings shortly added to their State results great summers.

They would finish:

Rank Name Hometown State Weight Schoo
1. Anthony Valencia Bellflower CA 174 Arizona State
2. Logan Massa St. John's MI 165 Michigan
3. Zahid Valencia Bellflower CA 184 Arizona State
4. Myles Martin Penns Grove NJ 184 Ohio State
5. Vincenzo Joseph Pittsburgh PA 149 Penn State
6. Matt Kolodzik Bellbrook OH 141 Princeton
7. Nick Piccinnini East Setauket NY 125 Oklahoma State
8. Michael Kemerer Murrysville PA 149 Iowa
9. Kaid Brock Stillwater OK 133 Oklahoma State
10. Lance Benick Fridley MN 197 Arizona State

13. Shields
37. Johnson
24. Krivus
54. Racer
74. Myers

Its crazy how things change, but once upon a time just about every program in the country would have taken Racer.

Who's rankings were these? I don't recall Racer ever being that high in the PFP or in the 2015 class.

Definitely is a brutal sport and I can understand it. That said, you don't typically see wrestlers that have wrestled for 3 years and been 2x AAs give up their final year of eligibility without having a season ending injury or some type of off the mat issues.

Maybe grades weren't good enough to get into grad school?

These rankings are something to use when discussing the importance of a top 10 recruit vs. development(and only 1 of them is at PSU).

A. Valencia- R12 1st year in a very deep weight.
L. Massa- 3rd in that same deep weight.
Z. Valencia- 3rd, with 1 loss all season.
Martin- 1st and 5th with out redshirting and moving up a weight.
Joseph-1st.
Kolodzik-7th
Piccinnini-4th
Kemerer-3rd
Brock-5th
Benick-Soul Searching.

9 out of 10 AA'd as a Freshman with 2 Champs and 3-3rds.

I tried to find the highest ranking for Racer that I could find. He is in the top 20 in many others. The top rankings were from WrestlingUSA, the Sophomore rankings, from March 2013. I believe these rankings are compiled by Dan Fickel. I might be wrong about that though. The second grouping is the standard DICW rankings, which I believe are still compiled by the legendary Earl.

Shows you the wide variance of rankings that exist nowadays. I remember when the only rankings were the ones that came in the monthly Amateur Wrestling News magazine. Racer was at one point extremely highly thought of. His star certainly lost a lot of its luster by time he was out of High School though. I still don't think I have ever heard the "real" story about what led to him transferring out of Apple Valley right before the State Tournament series was starting. Anyone care to rehash that old story and enlighten some of us who are behind?

Also, does anyone know why Racer transferred from Virginia tech?

I think Ohio State just took on a lot of potential headaches.

When Racer was highly thought of he lost to Edgar Bright, before whatever "issues" started. Jake Ryan beat Edgar Bright. I think if Jake Ryan is healthy he is significantly ahead of Racer at this point. However, I don't know if Jake Ryan will ever be healthy again. I think neither will be the starting 157 next year.

This is what I was thinking. What's ur opinion on where Sasso goes?
I was thinking Iowa for a while but not too sure still say this is the case till proven otherwise. I did read somewhere (might've even been here) that his mom like Ohio state but even if that's true I don't think she has a huge barring on his decision

can't go wrong with either of those chooses. Of course I'm hoping Iowa. With Teasdale decommitting were a bit behind in the arms race. Sasso would really help with that.

So Jake Ryan was injured all season? What was the injury?

Something was wrong with him. He missed quite a bit of competition and when he did take the mat he was clearly not on the same level as he was during his Freshmen season.

I'm not sure if they ever announced anything or if it has just been speculated.
