Most everyone seems to focus on the quarterback and the offense in this thread. We got about what we expect from both in these areas in the Michigan State game, but the defense was terrible. We couldn't stop the run or the pass. We missed tackles all over the field and got zero pressure on a young quarterback. They never had to punt once in the game! We looked better defensively against Ohio State than we did against the mighty 3-3 Michigan State. What has happened to our elite defense? It has to be more than missing one starter!

Well, we're now a little over 4 years removed from Chris Doyle as the strength coach. You know, that guy who demanded excellence and made you tuck in your shirt and be on time? The guy who consistently churned out NFL olineman, dlineman, linebackers, tight ends, and players in the secondary.
Well he's gone now because the University caved to the woke.

yes they are down, but you also need a capable offense that can help move the chains and take the pressure of the D to always have to win games.

I want everyone on this board to remember that Kirk chose his son's career over taking advantage of elite level defense for three years. That's how I'll remember him.
Anyway QC is correct, we've been spoiled but they are down this year. Maybe some stats top 25 but no longer top 5 or 10. You just can't do what we did offensively in the first half and expect to win. If Cade completes more passes in the 1st half is it 12-7? Maybe a long scoring drive gives the D a breather and time to adjust and it's only 9-7. We'll never know.
I do know this though it's very rare under Kirk Ferentz that our offense plays outstanding and we can blame the D for a loss. The D may not be great a few games a year but the offense is rarely helping them either.
