Looking ahead to 2017, is anyone a little worried about who replaces Jaleel and then Bazata the following year? I was just looking through the roster and there didn't seem to be any obvious replacements. Maybe a defensive end moves inside or someone comes out of nowhere. Usually we are fine at DT. Does anyone "in the know" have any input?

Hulett and Bazata in'17 and Daniels out of Texas will figure in and play. Maybe Lattimore but it could be a trouble spot.

Do you remember 2003 and 2004? Iowa will always opt to play their best 4 ... even if that requires guys moving around. In 2003, Babineaux slid to the interior from DE. Derreck Robinson, one of those long-and-lean big guys ... he rotated in at DT in 2003 out of need due to injuries to Babs and Clauss. However, in '04, DRob moved back outside to the DE spot opposite Roth.

Jaleel and and some of the other D-linemen have been saying good things about Hulett. Although he's a walk-on (probably one of those guys who will eventually earn a 'ship), he'll likely carve out a role for himself in '17. Given body-type and internal talk, I would venture to guess that guys like Slater and Lattimore will be firmly in the picture for playing time at DT in '17.

Given my initial comment - I wouldn't be shocked if we eventually end up seeing an experienced DE slide to the interior if 3 of our top 4 guys are DE-types.

We'll likely eventually want to have a space-eater type of DT. That is presumably why the coaches initially landed Harris ... and now are recruiting Daniels so hard since Harris decommitted. If the Hawks land Daniels, I could definitely see him firmly being in the picture as a "big bodied" DT in '18 as a redshirt freshman. Also, guys like Duwa and Schulte will likely develop as Klug/King-type DTs ... really quick, high motor DTs.

I've thought about our '17 and '18 DT situation quite a lot ... however, I'm not certain that it's quite an area of concern yet. We'll have to see how guys continue to develop and see how healthy guys can remain.

The Ghost (in the 4th paragraph) is right on track. Duma & Schultz as Klug/Kingers--and Doyle shaping up a fantastic pool consisting of Slater, Lattimore, Hulett, Brincks, Reiff, Simon and hopefully Daniels.

I remember hearing the staff was high on Slater playing on the inside last year. It appears he is on the outside this year as the opportunity for PT is there. Look for him to move inside next year. Also, look for Reiff if he keeps adding some weight(very similar to Klug's frame) to get in the rotation. We will be fine at DT.

dont forget jansen at dt he could surprise some people

I don't doubt that - however, I haven't yet heard anything about jansen for the better or worse.

Given that Gressel left, he probably felt that too many guys were passing him. Given that Morehouse and others have stated in the past that they thought that Gressel looked decent in Iowa's open DL drills. That suggests to me that Iowa's DTs will probably be okay.

Being Bazata is only a Junior he should be penciled in for 2017. I also agree that Slater sounds like in another year and a few dozen more LB's he will be next guy in. Also agree one of the DE's this year slides to interior and there is always an Iowa guy in each class that out performs his recruiting ranking. Other than 2012, our DT play has been above average at very least every year (other than early KF tenure) so generally do not worry so much about that position....besides Morgan is still the coach so there is really nothing to worry about (best position coach in college football and has been for 15 years. Look at the TE's he coached, and then the OL he coached, and then look at how much better DL has been since he took over. in 2013.

We'll hopefully have more answers to this after camp in August.

Yep - Coach Morgan has the veritable Midas touch. What is especially surprising about Morgan ... and is probably part of the reason why he originally got moved to the DL ... is that wherever he coaches, the attrition rate tends to be very low. Thus, to me, the very fact that Gressel and Harris have both left in the past year tells me that the quality of the guys ahead of them is pretty good. The implication is that they left simply because they didn't see playing time in the foreseeable future.

Top Future DT candidates

'17 Class
Kirkpatrick 6-5 265
Daniles? 6-2 310

'16 Class
Schulte 6-4 250
Lattimore 6-5 260

'15 Class
Slater 6-2 285
Jansen 6-2 270

'14 Class
Hulett 6-3 285

A couple of these guys could be called upon right now and step in size wise. Others are going to have to take the King/Kroul/Klug route and be Doyleized for a couple years.
