Dennis Avoids Trials Hype

Man I am really pulling for DD this weekend. After what happened to him in the NCAA finals, I have to think that the Wrestling Gods owe him one and his time is coming.

Always liked DD...just another example of a non elite kid who comes to Iowa and gets developed into a world class wrestler.

Definitely a spunky overachiever for a program that, more and more, is dependent upon that kind of athlete. Best of luck to him at the trials!

I couldn't agree more. That was a great night of Iowa wrestling, but having him lose, especially like he did, really hurt. I can't imagine how he felt.

DD is a big point threat guy. I've seen him look lights out, beating top guys with quick 10-0 tech fall wins. Tony is always solid. Lots of close nail-biting wins, but always solid. I've only seen him get beat bad once (to the Cuban). Even when wrestling the best guys in the World (Iran, Russia etc) TRam is in it. DD more offensive upside (especially par terre), TRam better defense. Part of me hopes that DD gets a shot, because of the medal drought at this weight and DD brings a different look. Part of me hopes that TRam gets in and finally figures out how to use his strengths to his advantage in the international style.
In the end its kinda like picking between your kids.

love this match. Dennis lost but was right there. and huge cajones.

Dennis-Ampar
Who u picking to win 57 and 65? I feel the winner will come from a top 4 seed at each weight.
Ramos vs Scott should be real good along with Dennis vs Graff. Graff got that trap arm of his first takedown and it was over for Dennis in there last match. I don't think that happens again.
Metcalf vs Kennedy should be real good. I don't know why but I feel Oilver is gonna get past Green.
I always enjoy ur insight. Keep up the good work!

Quinn -

I think Dennis and Scott are the best.

Dennis, imo, is the pure best wrestler at the weight right now. But Scott has such a huge frame and savvy/awareness.

Tony is a pure winner. and Graff is ultra dangerous.

i'd be lying if i said my pick at this weight meant anything. Gimme Scott. - i know that won't make you guys happy, but...

It's ok Willie, we realize that you have to go with your PA guy and throw a bone to OSU every once in awhile...might as well get it done all at once during freestyle when the PSU fans are not paying attention. Somewhere, Nico has hurt feelings. So is it going to be Jordan Oliver or Zain at 65kg? ;)

Just doing my best to keep the pot stirred.

Coleman Scott's a great pick - he's from PA, wrestled at OSU, and coaches NC. Hell if he had a bad tan and was a face musher, Willie could make everyone happy.

I don't think it would be a shock at all if Scott wins. People on his board can be a little to sensitive at times, but you can't blame them for being passionate about there team. I hope ur wrong and we see a Ramos vs Dennis Final! I don't know why but I favor Dennis in this one. Gonna be a great weekend! What do u think about 65? Oh and if you can answer this question with a yes or no, Reenan have any interest in Iowa?

You brave enough to try a PA-connected 65 pick on here? I might have missed it...

Just my opinion but I think Scott is past his prime. I think he gets taken out pretty early. Smalls, I appreciate you being on HR talking some wrestling!

If the seeds hold Scott has to be thrilled with his draw being on the other side of Dennis. Dennis has beat him 3 times in a row I believe.

I'll say Colon beats Graff and then Dennis over Colon. Scott over Ramos and then Dennis over Scott.

This is the third time Scott has made the weight so one would think it's getting easier.

I would agree that a healthy and inspired Scott is our best chance to medal.

Or Ramos continues his reign over everyone is the US.

For 65 my answer is simple - Metcalf until proven otherwise. He's owned U.S. 65kg and though there is always chatter about this guy and that guy and a changing of the guard, it continues to be unproven.

Thats the way I see it also. That bracket is so deep, can't wait to see how it unfolds. FRL today?

Rewatched Dennis vs Scott and Coleman has so much more length but had a tough time getting past the head/hands of DD after an initial TD from space. Similarly, I think Coleman will have a tough time getting in on Ramos. Question for Tony is does he have enough offense to beat Coleman.

I don't see anybody beating Metcalf but it's certainly not out of the question. Striebler and Kennedy have the athleticism to do it. The fact that Green lost this time down at 65 doesn't mean much either. He has had some head scratchers and came back to look unstoppable.

The last time Metcalf lost to an American opponent was in 2013...that streak is even longer than Burroughs. Has Tony lost to an American in freestyle?

With the allowances given at a lot of events I'm not sure this won't be the 1st time down to scratch weight for Coleman.

Jimmy Kennedy worries me
Sandor hit the nail on the head here IMHO. There are obviously a lot of studs here and any of them could get hot, but I can't see Green down a weight class having the gas tank to hold off Metcalf is he's up late, or having the energy to score on him late if he's down. I think Metcalf's freestyle experience and mat savvy gives him the edge over Streebler, ah but Kennedy is a tough out. If they meet up, I'm going to be nervous, especially if he manages to get on top of Brent. He's got some wicked turns.

Okay I want Dennis to win the 57kg spot too. What a great ending to his career it would be if he and Metcalf both made the olympic team and medaled.

Wow what an article. It feels so wrong trying trying to pick between Dennis and Ramos.
