Des Moines Radio Personality - Larry Cotlar

twice in my life i have experienced the feeling of almost drowning; its awful, where you are struggling, panicking, and trying to not take in water. luckily i was helped in time, both times. horrible story. horrible way to die, because it happens so fast and the person is gone.

Jeez, absolutely terrible. Don't know the man, but have listened to him many a time in sports radio here in DM. Seemed to be about the nicest guy around, always in a good mood and laughing. Terrible.

Listened to Larry Cotlar for nearly 40 years. Seemed like really nice guy. God please watch over his family and comfort them

I recall Larry would be in a segment on radio where he would be giving scores from college football games around the country. When he came to the Rice Owls he would always say "Rice got steamed" against whoever they played that day. it was kind of funny the way he said it.

Didn't know of Larry prior to hearing this news. Sorry to hear it. Condolences to the family.
Getting the amount of rain they did in the Des Moines area last night is enough to create some powerful water movement.

Unreal amount of water hit central Iowa. I spent the night in the Des Moines area ... seemed like torrential rains. Happy I was out of it and in my (crappy) hotel room. Took my son down to the AAU regional track meet down in Indianola.

Anyhow, it's sad to know that tragedy struck due to flood waters last night. Thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Or "it was a really hot day in Houston and Rice got fried Texas"

Terrible news. TnP to family and friends of Cotman. He was fun to listen to on the radio as a passionate fan of sports doing interviews and calling Drake games.

Rest In Peace Cotman!

In my opinion the radio football version of sound off was at its best when he and mike newell were doing it in the late 80s and early 90s. Maybe that opinion was formed by me being a kid then but I sometimes listened to his current show just for the nostalgia of hearing his voice.

I was somewhat familiar with Cotlar, but had no idea how well-liked he was in the business. The respect and love being shown is pretty amazing.

I didn't know anything about Mr. Cotlar personally until this tragedy, but I, too, always appreciated his work on WHO. I hope the people who did know him said all those great things to him when they had the chance.

When I lived south of Des Moines I listened to the Cotman every day on the way to work. Helluva nice guy. Didn't always agree with him but I sure respected him. Sad way to go. Prayers for him and his family
