Desmond King

Wow.

I'm not an expert, but even if he wins the DB award, what's his draft stock at? Is he fast enough to be an NFL corner? He seems pretty fast to me and I haven't seen anybody outrun him and I've seen him run away from several players. I'm not an expert in those sorts of things though.

Either way, to have him and Mabin back and if we can get any kind of rush out of our line, this will be a really hard defense to play against next season.

Perhaps part of the selling point to come back would be using king a bit on offense ala Charles Woodson. All American defensive back, stellar on special teams and used on occasion offensively? I'll be the first to admit I was initially against him returning kicks due to the fear of injury, by he is a dynamic playmaker. We lose a couple receivers to graduation so there might be a need to utilize his skills on offense occasionally. That might be appealing to Desmond, who knows?

Mabin can leave if he wants. I'm cool with that.

He took his fair share of lumps last season for sure, but so did King when he was an underclassman. Mabin will be as good as King is by the time he graduates, imo. Experience trumps everything else.

I'll take it with a grain of salt. Certainly not bad news, but a good game vs Stanford, and he could end up in 2nd round which I would think is his ceiling. (He's a projected 3rd rounder right now)

He may be leaning that way now, but he hasn't received feedback about the draft yet, at least no officially.

King reminds me of Darin Woodson, not the fastest but good instincts. Woodson is still playing at a high level for Oakland, and has had a long career.

I'll be more excited when we hear Desmond say it directly and that it is his final decision, not that he's currently "leaning".

Charles. Darren was the SS for the cocaine Cowboys.

He has another game left. Of course he's going to say that. He's been to the KF school of media training.

"will be as good as King"...not seeing it. I would call Mabin serviceable in Parker's D. I would love to see him get better.

He's no Charles Woodson, but he's a very good corner back. He could be probably be used on offense based on the returns I saw him make. But again, he's not close to Woodson.

With his tackling a covering ability, he could project to CB or FS in the NFL. He would be pretty terrifying as a ball hawking FS, roaming center field reading the QB eyes and making plays.

Bottom line, I would love to see him back next year.

If he comes back, I think he will have about the same production as this year. The whole key is who is the other Safety with Taylor? Because if we do not have a good safety, it could be trouble.

I think if King & Ott come back this defense will be scary good. There are a lot of younger guys who got plenty of PT this year, and hopefully they continue to get better. The offense line is what scares me. I know we lose Blythe who was the anchor. it seems every year we are really good, we have a smart and dominate center. Whoever takes Blythe's spot is just as important as King and Lomax.

I am hoping losing the BTC leaves a bad taste in the mouthes of the players and they bust their butts this off-season. They can be pretty salty next year, I realize we need to replace some key positions, but there are some studs in the program who will be good.

With all the injuries on the line a lot of younger players got some quality playing time this year.

I'm going to wait on this. As it was said before, if he picks off 2 passes and returns a punt for a TD in the Rose Bowl, may have a different thought towards coming back.
As far as our defense, Maybin has been frustrating, but has also had bright spots, and I really think that he can only get better, which is a good thing. He'll be fine, and if King does come back, not a bad workout partner to have, one that's going to be an NFL pick.
And for our O-line. Daniels will take over the center spot, and we won't skip a beat. He'll take time to call out assignments and what not, but the guy played often during the first half of the season as a freshman, that's saying something. I would be surprised to see if they moved Botteger to right guard, since Croston beat him out, but I highly doubt that. I did see that the youngest Ferentz worked his way into the 2 deep at right guard before the Nebraska game, but for a few weeks, a freshman by the name of Dalton Ferguson was there, and that guy is a monster for his age (6'4", 317), but, we tend to put out a pretty good group, so no worries there.
Now let's finish this thing and win the ROSE BOWL!!! GO HAWKS!!!!

Mabin has been the weak link in the db's, but he played outstanding in the MSU game. He was blanketed all over their WRs. I think his issues are fixable. If you notice when he makes a mistake it's usually in trying to locate the ball. He's usually in position to knock the ball away or intercept it but he gets caught not locating the ball and flagged for pass interference. If he can improve on this I think he could be a pretty good cover corner.

Thanks for monitoring our board and being hyper sensitive. I don't recall saying King is as good as Woodson, I simply suggested maybe Iowa utilizes King on offense like Michigan did with Woodson his final year.

However, due to your hypersensitivity, I decided to look up Woodson's junior year stats and compare them with Kings(Woodson stats courtesy of www.sports-reference.com so don't kill me if they aren't completely accurate, but this was the only spot I could find junior Michigan stats . Here is a comparison of King and Woodson from their junior years: If accurate, not even close MichiganMan:

King: 8 INT with 14yd avg return with 1TD, 12.7 yds per punt return, 25.6 yards per kick return

Woodson: 4 INT with 7yd avg return, 5.4 yd per punt return, 20 yards per kick return

Kings junior stats are superior to Woodson's senior stats, except of course the offensive numbers.

The fact is, if King put up similar numbers on defense and special teams, and was used on offense like Woodson and happens to score a couple touchdowns, he too could be a heisman candidate, or at least would be in the conversation.

Mabin improved a ton as the year went on. I'm excited about his future.
I've been saying for weeks there's really little downside to king coming back. The shelf life of an NFL corner is a lengthy one so there's no need to rush it. He's gonna get drafted and have his chance either way. I think he would benefit from another year.

How about Mabin stays and you leave? I'm cool with you not being a hawk fan - matter of fact Herkys revoked your fan card for being an a**hole towards a hawk player.

Sorry, forgot the Hawks had a good year so we aren't allowed to be critical of anything. My bad.

Mabin did not play well this year and anyone who thinks he did is kidding themselves and wearing black and gold glasses. He constantly played off 9 yards off the ball (i get it part of it scheme) and would be nickeled and dimed for 14 yard in routes down the field in every game.

Mabin isn't as good as King right now but trust me, we could do a lot worse at CB. Look around CFB and Mabin would be the best CB on the field in any Big 12 game.

Being critical of his play or telling him to leave, big difference. He has improved if you actually understood the game, last 3-4 games he played very well.

You obviously didn't see his improvement from week 1 to the end of the year. He struggled against Allison and Illinois. But as the year went on, he got better and better. He was excellent against Nebraska and he played very well in the BTCG. He'll be just fine going forward. He's developing and he's only gonna get better m remember he was a receiver when he came to Iowa.

ANYCuntHawk,

Being critical of play is completely different with wishing a player left the program.

Either way, you're wrong. Mabin is at worst an average B10 corner. We didn't finish 15th in the country in allowing 6.0 per attempt with a terrible corner. Next year he will be good.

Guessing you never played or don't attend games.
Mabin was outstanding the second half of the season.

+1

Mabin was a stone cold shut down corner the last 3-4 games. Came a long way from the start of the season. If both Mabin and King are back that would be one of the top 3 secondaries in the BIG next year

I think that sounds great but it may still be just emotions from losing the title game. Let's see how he feels after the Rose Bowl. Or maybe he has been told by some scouts that he is projected to be as high as he wants.
