while both coaches have been mentioned i don't believe i've seen a thread comparing the two on who would be the better coach at iowa. so money aside (ie if they cost the same) which is the guy who will win more (and why)?

I think its McCollum. And not only because it'd be the cheaper alternative.

Guy brought over some of his D2 players and still won his conference's regular season and conference tourney trophies. Also has won (at least!) 30 games in his very first season as a D1 coach. Mid-major or not, that's hella impressive.

Add that to everything he did at the D2 level, and its hard to find a downside on this guy.

Everyone brings up that its an unknown about what his recruiting will be like, which is true, but as long as he gets guys who buy in to his system, he doesn't need 15 5*s to fill out his roster to be really successful.

Its McCollum 1A and DeVries 1B, imho.

Will Wade and Chris Jans should be viable candidates. I'm not sold on "we have to have the last Drake guy" as the be all end all.

i just ran into the other (mcc/ferentz) thread that makes the points you did about mcc, also that he brings toughness. so devries is in the mccaf mold?

yeah not intended to suggest it will be one of these two but since they have been mentioned as the two most likely candidates, i was looking to compare them up front (and later embrace the disappointment of getting the lesser option) :)

The last time (that I can remember) Iowa hired someone that everyone was clamoring for was Matt Gatens. Iowa usually surprises us. And while Matt seems to be a fine fellow and a great Hawkeye, it didn't seem to make much of a difference on the court.

I think everyone is going to be surprised - and not in a good way.

If You need a coach at Iowa who can do more with less then McCollum is probably your guy.
Wouldn't it be nice to go into every game knowing you have a chance because of your defense and rebounding.

I would prefer DD, but BMc would still get me excited and back in Carver.

Wade or Jans are very much “blah” hires in my book, and I won’t be back in CHA until they can prove me wrong.

Yup, back when Bo Ryan had a 7 point lead on us, it may as well been 27….😉
