Dikembe Mutombo RIP

Always liked Dikembe. Seemed like a good dude and was always wanting to help the struggling people from his country and always seemed to have a smile on his face.
I guess the only people that might not like him are SuperSonics fans. RIP

Sad stuff, he was one of the guys that got me hooked on the game of basketball when I was little. RIP

I'm still pissed he and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf beat the Sean Kemp/Gary Payton Seattle Supersonics in the 94' playoff series. I remember Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf had Tourette syndrome. He'd tick while bringing the ball up the court. He was crazy in that series.

This is true, the body isn't really meant to be that large. However, it was cancer that killed him.
So, yes. It was cancer, which many studies have shown that tall people are more likely to incur than shorter people. Whether it was a contributing factor in his case will never be known, but the link between height and many cancers is well documented.

He died of a brain tumor. Not height related issues.
So, as I replied to another poster, the causal link between height and many cancers is well documented. Whether it was a contributing factor in his case can't be ascertained.

For brain cancer? You got a paper?

One could do a heck of a lot worse than to have a child with Dikembe's ethics. RIP big man. Hoya saxa.

Unfortunately very tall people have a propensity to live pretty short lives.
Bill Russell was 6’9” and lived well into his eighties. Kareem’s 7’1” and still kicking in his late seventies. Super-tall actors Richard Kiel and Peter Mayhew (both in the neighborhood of 7’2”) hit their mid seventies.

That being said, there is a fairly strong correlation between extreme height and decreased lifespans. I’d have to imagine cardiovascular issues would be the main culprit as there’s a lot more stress on a 6’10” persons heart than there is on someone who’s 5’10”.

there are also stresses that we dont think about in that the world is not built for 7 footers. when we were at the beach at Wm Bennett's house (he went about 6'3) all of the utility tables, sink, toilets, etc were tall.

Being fat, as Joe correctly said, can cause cancer.

I didn't say it.

It was the actual conclusion of the study he posted. Being tall was not a risk factor; either because there is no actual correlation, or there could be, but the study did not have a large enough sample size to be properly statistically powered to show it.

And, because BMI did correlate, any other study ignoring that as a co-factor in their height/brain cancer analysis could find a false correlation due to taller people in their study simply being fatter. Ergo, if he does find such a study, it'd be important that it included that as a covariate.

Kareem also had prostate cancer and leukemia though.
