Watching the TT/Mich game and they mentioned TT lost 5 seniors from an elite 8 team last year and the coach basically rebuilt the team in one year with transfers. Not saying that's the answer for us but has Fran ever signed a transfer? I'm drawing a blank... other than Uthoff… kind of...

Uthoff was just a transfer. He came after his freshman year at Wisconsin.

Fran himself was a transfer. He won’t take a low character guy though and some coaches don’t really care about that. I believe he took a transfer in his first class at Iowa, but I could be mistaken.

He’s tried on a handful his main fear with a transfer is having a guy like Bryce Dejan Jones that ISU had.

Uthoff is the only true transfer. Cartwright and Dickerson were both JUCO's.

The only other transfer I remember Fran pursuing at Iowa prior to this year was Cole Huff who ended up at Creighton.

Fran recruits pretty well so we will never be in a position to need a bunch of grad transfers. Kids get better year over year.

Next years roster will have the most talent 1-13 that we’ve had in decades. There is zero dead weight. Our “worst” players were all Rivals150 with multiple HM offers.

i heard that too. that's insanely good coaching, imho.

remember when Iowa lost that many (or around that many) seniors? the next year we were led by a senior, Jok, and a bunch of freshman and we struggled that season AND the next season.

Kilroy is that you.........you forgot to put up star ratings next to misspelled names.:)

Just kidding L. I agree with both points. I think some underestimate Fran's recruiting, because they forget all the lean years that took us off the map in BBall. On paper it's the best talent since the Davis heyday.

Fran has said he's willing to bring in transfers, but he's selective. Uthoff was one that worked out. I think he's reached out to a few (like Huff, and a player from Pepperdine IIRC), he just hasn't had that much bad attrition (knock on wood).

We were the first team left out of the tournament that season. Struggle?
This, we should have been in the tournament Jok’s senior year. The Minnesota game, when the refs refused to grant Ellingson a timeout, is the only reason we didn’t make it in. Cheating mother ****ers. That play still pisses me off. The refs were the only ones in the building who “couldn’t hear” Ellingson screaming for a timeout. Bull shit, they heard him, and just decided not to grant the timeout. Never mind the fact that when they called the jump ball the Minnesota player was standing with both feet out of bounds.

Is this a serious post? I can’t tell.

We haven't needed grad transfers? So what exactly did we get out of Connor this year other being better than Ellingson or nobody? Kid was put in a tough spot and Fran should have brought a grad transfer 1 or 2 in knowing that Dailey is very limited, Moss is wildly inconsistent and Connor would be a freshman with limited / no offense. The whole "lesson learned" last year allegedly was that Bohannon needed to get off the ball. While Connor did contribute in areas he did nothing to free up Bohannon and is like playing 5 on 4 on offense.

The "dead weight" you refer to are all big misses by Fran that I would think a coach of his tenure wouldn't make or at least not have them represent 2.5 recruiting classes. Dailey is another who occupied a scholarship for 3 years, showed 0 improvement and is now leaving. I get that not every recruit is going to pan out but Fran is working on his PhD in Bad Offerology. Ellingson, Fleming, Williams, Dailey.= 4 misses at the most critical position of need. Give me a couple grad transfers capable of helping the team in some capacity over these 4.

TT is now in the elite 8 two years in a row. We haven't been since before the internet was invented.

Iowa played Virginia (Bennet) and Oregon (Altman) in NIT--this was early in Fran's 9 year run at Iowa. Iowa program was at pretty much same level as those two schools in rebuild process. I think Oregon has now been to NCAA 6 times now under Altman and a Final 4 appearance. Virginia has choked in NCAA tourney play, but they have conference and conference tourney success that Iowa has never seen under Fran. Fran has gotten Iowa to average level in B1G--wins around 50% of his B1G games. Next year is his chance to win more than 1 game in BTT and to do more than round of 32 in NCAA.

Let's at least give Chris Beard the credit he is due for being an excellent coach.

The potentially significant downside to playing the transfer game is that once you commit fully to it, it becomes hard to recruit high school players. Nobody wants to be recruited over. Maybe Beard can make the transition to high school recruits. But I think it is more likely that he moves on to a higher profile school.

Agree. Far too many in here associate transfers with thug / low character guys. You don't get thugs and low character guys to play team ball and defend like TT does. Beard does not suffer fools and he sure as hell doesn't waste scholarships on guys who don't have a certain level of athleticism like Fran has. Minimally Fran should be all over these kids from NDSU, SDSU, and other mid majors who are looking to grad transfer. There hasn't been a Fran team that wouldn't have benefited from some mature, tough-minded play from a grad transfer. I mean it's not like the minutes haven't been there given all of the guys who ride the pine and transfer.

Well, Bennett is a top 5 coach in the country surrounded by talent, and Oregon cheats.

you’ll be saying this after next season too. i have 10 years of evidence. what do you have to think Fran can take any team to S16? hope i guess?

If Fran does take them to Sweet 16 will you leave? Your hatred and jealousy of Kirk and Fran is unbearable, as is your hatred of any white player for the football and basketball teams. You are either the most miserable Hawkeye fan I have ever seen or you are just a full-time troll who doesn’t really like Iowa.

You make up BS constantly with nothing to back it up. You bag on the coaches all the time as having these sinister ulterior agendas but can’t prove it. Being an extreme negative Hawkeye fan who has no objective thinking is no better then an extreme tube who blindly backs up everything Iowa does with no objective thinking.

I believe the 2020 class will be another class of large numbers, if there was any time to pull in a few Grad Transfers that would be the year; 1. To bring some experience to the team 2. To smooth out the scholarship distribution as these classes of 5-6 recruits just creates peaks and valleys in performance (understandbly).

Agree 100% ... This is where Iowa differs from many coaches and programs who don't care too much about what the player does off the court/field ... As long as they produce come game time.

This is a good post and the part I bolded is an excellent question. If you think about Connor in terms of "wins above replacement" I can't imagine he adds a thing.

Connor was slightly below average when it comes to win shares per 40 minutes.

It must be the lack of offense. He's fine handling the ball and I have seen a lot of his fans posting assist to turnover ratios that are fine. But he simply doesn't look to score enough. When he does drive to the hoop it is somewhat unexpected and usually turns out well. He seems afraid to shoot from the outside though. Truly, when he's on the court, teams sag and count on him not doing anything. It was even worse when Fran would put Dailey out there with him.

Firing a coach who was one possession away from the sweet 16 in order to hire a coach we hope can make the sweet 16 seems like a lopsided wager.

If there are any serious looks at transfer options for PG or combo guard I will be pleasantly surprised. He's had multiple years now in which that would have been a good move and we've seen zip. Why would it happen now?

It is ridiculous to think that we don’t look. The bottom line is that we have a proven, multi year all conference returning PG and grad transfers want guaranteed playing time. Jordan may not be good enough for you but other players see him and know that there isn’t a lot of PT to be had.

Connor fulfilled an important role on this team. His role was NOT to be a scorer as we had other better options for that. Did a fantastic job of staying within the system. Players like that can be very valuable. Kid is a winner.
