I guess we will see on Tuesday!

At the beginning of the season, who would have thought that Moss, JoBo AND Wagner would be starting?

I thought it was interesting that the first substitution on Saturday vs Ohio State was for one player of the starting 5: Pemsl in for Cook. Otherwise, JoBo, Moss, Baer and Wagner remained on the floor when Fran made his FIRST substitution.

The next round of subs came at the 1st TV time out (15:27 mark) with Iowa leading just 5-4. ***Brady, Uhl and Kriener came in with JoBo and Pemsl staying on the floor. Moss left with 2 fouls.

At the next TV time out (11:01 mark), Iowa led 21-18: Brady, CW, Baer, Kriener and Pemsl came back into the game

At the 8:20 mark, Cook came in for Kriener; JoBo in for CW.

At next TV Time out (7:37 mark): it was JoBo, Brady, Baer, Cook and Wagner

At 4:20 mark, Kriener came in for Cook

At the final TV time out of 1st half (3:55): it was JoBo, Brady, Baer, Wagner, Kriener

At 2 minute mark, Uhl came in for Baer, with JoBo, Brady, Wagner and Kriener

The above starting line up and substitutions gave Iowa a 40-29 half time lead.

Brady (11 pts) and JoBo (9 pts) combined were 6-11 from 3, 20 total points (of the team's 40).

Moss, JoBo, Baer, Cook & Wagner then started the 2nd half.

I hope so. That lineup broke the streak of weak starts and set the pace for a nice win. Stick with it, and keep using the casual press the first few minutes to help get the energy going and prevent the opponent from settling in.

Agree, the 3/4 court is used to disrupt and slow down the opponent. Even more effective when they aren't in rhythm, yet.

One thing that tends to get overlooked is the amount that we change defenses. I've seen several times this year the 3-2 zone which I believe is a departure from previous seasons (usually only saw that in token stretches to confuse opponents). I like that our team full of freshman and sophomores seem to be able to communicate what defense to be in, even if the execution isn't always great. They'll figure out how to make each set more effective with more practice and experience, but it seems like either teams are able to change up consistently or they aren't.

I love that Fran has appeared to accept that Cook and Pemsl just don't work together right now. It's tough when they both excel so close to the basket, but they'll have years to figure that out and can each play approximately 20 minutes this year.

I would love to see Fran iron out a few other combinations (like which tandems make Uhl and Moss most effective). If we can crack those two, I think this team becomes a whole different animal more akin to what we saw against Purdue in Iowa City.

I thought Fran did the best job all year of substituting. After Brady got hot at the next timeout, I expected him to come out; as that is what Fran has done all year. But he left most of the guys on the floor and only subbed in one guy. If things are going well, why sub most of the 'hot' guys out?? MAybe Fran has learned.

I would love to see the same starters and rotations Tuesday that we saw on Saturday

Jok will probably sit out the Rutgers game due to his
back. Bohannon, Moss, Baer, Cook, Wagner should
start. Wagner and Baer are the energy guys and their
hustle spreads to their team mates. Fran is making an
attempt to figure out the best combos.

So based on these numbers, maybe the starting 5 should be (assuming Jok is still hurt):
JoBo
Brady
Uhl
Pemsl
Kreiner

No sir . Need Baer and possibly Wagner on the floor at the opening tip. Energy to start the game is where it's at. Not after we get down by 10.

I agree with this lineup. Let's give Pete another day off.

the starting 5 scored just 5 points in the 1st 4 minutes of the game

Brady, Uhl, Kriener, JoBo and Pemsl scored 16 points in the next 4 minutes

that's a huge difference in production

All I am saying is we were down by 8-10 points right out of the gates the 3 straight losses we had. Baer didn't start. We didn't get behind to start the OSU game....

We need his tenacity & leadership on the floor to start the game. Especially on the road. And without Jok.

But 5 points in the first 4 and a half minutes is not very good right out of the gates. We were lucky that Ohio State was just as bad as us.

I don't know what the answers are. Fran is trying to figure it out too. Its fun to speculate, and as fans, that is all we can do, and hope for wins.

I love Wagner's energy; I just don't know about his scoring skills. He is getting better, however. But remember that air ball he threw up? We were lucky that Cook was there to catch it and dunk it.

Here are some conference stats on two of our Starters.

Cook 19 turnovers. 6 assists.
Miss. 11 turnovers 2 assists.

This along with many of Cooks wild spinning missed shots in the lane have led to our early deficits. Fran changed the lineup against Ohio State and we only scored 5 points in the first 4 minutes. We were simply fortunate that Ohio State only scored 4. Our first four minutes were still plagued by turnovers and rushed shots. Our early game issues have a lot to do with Joks injury along with the above mentioned stats more then anything else. If cook and Moss continue this trend it won't matter who starts along side of them. The offense will struggle and we will get behind no matter how hard Wagner and Baer play.

So, who should start?

I, personally, would like to see
Bohannon
Ellingson
Jok
Uhl
Kriener

Uhl Kriener Pemsl Cook and Baer are all interchangeable imo...
but I really like what I'm seeing from Bohannon and Ellingson...
and of course.... Peter Jok is the greatest basketball player to ever live.

JoBo
Jok
Moss
Wagner
Cook

Baer first off bench. Though it's getting tougher and tougher to keep him there...

Thought Cook played a good game tonight. Played under control and let things come to him. It's a process for all the young guys. Definitely a nice step in the right direction tonight. Great team win!

Baer is the perfect 6th man, when you have a solid consistent starting 5. We are not there yet with the Hawks starters but the players and team are improving so we'll see what the future brings.
