They have absolutely dropped off, and it's tough in a 1 bid league, attrition hurts too. Covid year was super promising with Green, but I will say IMO I think Iowa would be in a better position with Jacobson at the helm in comparison to Fran.
I think Jacobsen is a really good coach. He’s been a great fit in Cedar Falls. Just making a sweet 16 once and should have made another one before blowing that A & M game is a really good accomplishment for a Valley school. Still a really good coach just can’t quite get the horses anymore. But I’m guessing they could win the Valley tournament this year, will probably need to beat both Bradley and Drake.

UNI’s magical run was 15 years ago. Last tournament was 9 years ago where they pulled the biggest choke job in tournament history, blowing a 9 pt lead with a minute to go.
The changing landscape of college sports ( nil, portal, etc) and the corresponding destruction of the MVC are major factors in the last 9 years. The MVC is absolutely a one bid league now, but that wasn't always the case. In my opinion, UNI should have left when Creighton and Wichita State left. Things have totally changed as far as players secured and retained for mid-major programs. Seems like Jacobsen has been slow to react somewhat...but being a Drake supporter for many years, I definitely feel uni had a 5 or 6 year run where they had best program in state ( thanks Lick!). Watched many mvc tourneys that really made me appreciate Jacobsen....thier defense was ridiculous back then. Just ask KU!

Wichita State made a big mistake moving. No rivalries and not a way better conference. And they’re still in a 1 bid league playing teams from Florida that nobody in Wichita cares about. Creighton of course hit the mothership. But where was UNI going to go? They’re not getting invited to the Big East. Valley whole not what it was is still a top 10 league.

True on WSU and Creighton. My point was 2 of the top 3 programs in the conference left in quick succession. And the hit to the conferences perception was extreme...but to be fair, who could have imagined what things in college sports would look like 15 years later.
Where to go,? Definitely courted by MAC ( more due to football success at the time) and Ohio Valley. I understand still one bid leagues, but overall the athletic dept might not be as " trapped" as they seem to be now. Of course, as original poster said; easy to say now looking back. Who foresaw things then...not me I know

Valley is the 9th rated bball conference. MAC is 18th and Ohio Valley 28th out of 31. Leaving for either of those conferences would have been a terrible move. To be fair after the top 5 leagues almost every other league is a 1 bid league.
