Drake Ayala

Wrote about the 2 piece Bullshit before, guess it is worth saying again. Was at a local HS tournament and had my wrestler on the mat when I saw his opponent coming onto the mat and said to the coach he forgot to take his shorts off. Coach said, "no thats our new uniform."

I was like he can not wrestle a match wearing those baggy shorts! Called the Ref over said to him this can not be league? Was some discussion but eventual the match was wrestled. I do understand that most are Wrestling with tight fitting uniforms, but this example showed that it was open to interpretation.

Once more, as the tournament went on and the kids had several matches. Now these shirts and shorts are soaked in sweat and hanging down past the kids knees in some cases. The shirts are also all stretched out.

Tell you what. If you are facing a Leg Rider, wear a pair of these!!!! Try to jam a leg in from top when the bottom guys shorts are hanging down past his knees. Might be a new defense!

Kids do it in practice, daily. Not that big of a deal.

I’ve trained BJJ/ submission wrestling for about 20 years now. Never trained or competed in these sports in a singlet. Guys get into the leg riding position in sub wrestling more often than not and the fight shorts offer 0 protection from a guy trying to get his legs in on you. Brown belt matches are 8 minutes long and black belts go for 10. Never seen an issue come up with the shorts or rash guards getting stretched out or hanging to their knees.

Where is the picture where it looks like the word 'joke' is going over someone's head?

Noticed he's listed at 133/141. Most seemed to think he is the future at 125. Very interesting.

Ran across an article(below) that mentioned this. Drake's response:

"nothing is set in stone there,” and “we’ll just have to see how it goes.”

“We’ll figure that out down the road,” Ayala said. “I don’t know (which weight) I’ll end up at. There are a lot of moving parts to that (decision).”

So when I said he looked plenty big to me at 126 for super 32, how wrong was I? No less than 4 of you said I was an idiot and should get my eye sight checked! was he small at 126? I get he may have not been the biggest 126# there but he was big enough to win the tournament. now 6-7 weeks later he's wrestling good competition and winning at 132 I'll be surprised to see him at 125# in college. I guess we'll all have to wait and see how much weight he wants to cut. For the record, sometimes I'm an idiot but my eye sight is fine. I only use the 2.0 readers

He could run into the #1 kid in Nebraska and ISU commit Connor Knopick this weekend too. Fairly certain Knopick is going 126

I put together a list of ranked wrestlers from both states (hey now that their are HWC subscribers on here I can post Rokfin links right?)

While I appreciate the attention to this tournament, IAwrestle's rankings are out of touch with correct weights for the ranked kids. I remember seeing quite a few of them, for this tournament, there are 2 that come to mind...

Ty Koedam has been wrestling and will be wrestling 126
Ethan DeLeon is wrestling 145

When are you/they going to do a 3rd set with correct placements? For the record, I know it is mostly a shot in the dark guessing which weights kids will wrestle in the preseason, so give some grace if this comes off to harsh, but I am curious all the same

Our rankings our a couple of weeks old now, and I believe the plan is to release a new set next week. The main obstacle is schools that haven't been competing due to being fully online. This set was supposed to be the set we introduce freshmen to the rankings, but some freshmen haven't had a match yet (or maybe just getting their first).

I also know that the rankers do speak with a lot of the coaches to find out where wrestlers will be at for the season, and sometimes a kid just changes their mind. Easy example is Brandon O'Brien from Independence. He looked like a lock to go 120 but at the last minute decided not to certify at 120 and is planning on going 132 for the team.

I don't take it as a criticism. Sometimes a wrestler and coach aren't on the same page in the preaseason. Sometimes a wrestler decides they don't want to certify at a certain weight. And then sometimes you will see a wrestler change weights after he sees where the rest of the field is at.

Fair. I thought it was a bit odd when you see Reed Abbas, who placed 7th at 145, come in ranked at 138, but weirder things have happened. Conor Knopick from Millard South was 132 last year and dropped to 126? Like actually competing at 126....and that baffles me, unless he is making room for another team member.

Millard South is pretty solid in their class from 126 - 160 so that probably does give the team the optimum lineup. You also have to consider the club factor. Knopick is a MWC guy and Garrett Grice (the top ranked guy at 132) is also a MWC guy. That could have factored into the decision as well.

Early season rankings are a crap shoot for the most part. A lot of kids start at one weight and go down after the holidays. IA Wrestle does a pretty good job with the data available. The Predicament does as well.

My nephew is a big 182 lb but will start out at 195 and go down to 182. A lot of 215 lb will cut to 195 and there is a stark strength difference between a big 182 lb moving up to 195 and a small 215 lb cutting to 195.

We are lucky to have any wrestling at all.
