Drew Ott - Medical Redshirt?

That would be outstanding! Everytime Calhoun ran up the gut last night, I thought that Ott should be doing the same.

I thought these things took quite a while........however, I suppose Drew needs to hear soon; as he would need to make decision about staying at Iowa, or playing on Sundays?

What exactly was otts injury? Was it as severe as duzeys? Just wondering if ott could even be healthy enough to make an impact when duzey hasn't been able to.

He had knee and elbow surgery. Watching the replay, Ott was wearing a brace on his elboe during coin flip.

Ott had an ACL tear and an elbow ligament/tendon issue that required Tommy John surgery. Considering MLB pitchers have had the elbow surgery and have gone on to continue to earn a pro salary ... I'm not worried, especially considering that Ott is a DE (and not a pitcher). As for an ACL tear - it is what it is. Besides, his injury occurred back in October and he's already had surgery.

Duzey had a knee surgery - but his injury occurred right at the end of spring camp ... and he probably got the surgery shortly thereafter. Given that Duzey was a TE with great explosiveness and pretty high-end speed for a TE - any sort of knee injury is going to take away that sort of explosiveness in the short term. It can sometimes take well over a year to regain those attributes ... and Duzey did the best he could in around 6 months. And, mind you, his contributions were surprising to most ... because his rehab was ahead of schedule.

Also, different knee surgeries. Duzey's was a patellar tendon, I believe. Ott's is an ACL. From what I understand, the recovery from Ott's is more straight-forward. It's still possible he wouldn't be 100% at the start of the year, though.

I remember seeing the replay of when Ott hurt his elbow. Had his arm fully extended and planted into the ground when an ISU guy fell into it diving for a fumble. Ott immediately got up and ran to the sideline.

I'm not getting my hopes up either. I think he just had too much of an impact on Iowa's games and that is something that goes into the consideration. I would feel a lot better about the games early in the season if he's back. ISU and ND State both have potential to get rolling and gather some momentum. But neither has any chance of slowing a guy like Ott down

I know it is based on % of games played but if they look at his overall career how much he actually played his freshmen after they burned his redshirt and how much he actually played this year...I think if the NCAA does what is in the best interest of the athlete like they say they do then he has a chance to get the hardship. It's not like he is trying to get a 6th year out of it. He had no impact on the team his freshmen year. But I understand the rule and it doesn't look good!

Heard from a player's parent that the coaches think the odds are 50-60%.

My fingas are crossed tight!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if the committee will consider that Ott has a future in the NFL. That's certainly in the players best interest. I would say no, they won't.

Having him on the field Saturday would have made a huge difference. I guarantee they don’t run that option play on 4th down.
That said, I fear he’s played his last game as a Hawkeye.

A few years ago Christian Bryant was in a very similar position for Ohio State. He played in 5 games his senior year before breaking his ankle and therefore participated in 38% of OSU's games. He also missed almost half of his true freshman season due to injury and never took a redshirt year.

Bryant was denied a medical redshirt which would have granted him a 5th season. There are a few circumstances in Ott's appeal that make his argument somewhat stronger (Ott missed most of his freshman season, he was injured earlier in his senior season, and he will no be healthy enough to participate at the NFL combine this spring), but given the similarities in their cases, I don't think it likely that he is granted a 5th year.

I think he's done. They get very particular in these circumstances. Have seen some cases that seemed like a lock get thrown out. Would be huge if he did get it! Good luck to Drew.

He better get it. Never had a redshirt year after they burned it his freshman year. He's played the equivalent of 3 years of football in a 4 year period and he's asking for a 5th year which the majority of players get with a redshirt. I'll be pissed if they don't give it to him. If you're acting in the best interest of the kid, he gets another year. Period.
I think he gets it personally.

I have also seem some cases where I wonder why they are even trying, and they are granted.

Really makes you wish we hadn't burned his redshirt late his freshman year. Life is so unpredictable.

Oh man it would be awesome if he could suit up again, our DL depth would be so nice with him.....DE rotation of Hesse, Ott, and Nelson....with Bazata, Johnson, and Ekatakie in the inside....Top 4 LBs back too, good luck running the ball on us next year

Jared Reiner seemed like he had good chance for 5th year, and that didn't work out. I don't think NCAA is predictable.

Yep, the only thing predictable is that the NCAA is unpredictable.
I'll never understand how Jon Beutjer got a 6th year.

If you believe the NCAA operates with a sense of fairness...he has a good chance.

Not true. Iowa will be losing a starter in Cole Fisher.

Imagine if Meier hadn't played three games on kick off coverage his freshman year.

I'm not a big fan of burning a red-shirt for minimal time. I think Keenan Davis had like 4 catches as a true freshman. They red-shirt Willies in favor of playing Vandeberg. Lots of head-scratchers over the years.

First the elbow and then the knee. Heard he had surgery on the knee, but he also had a, I believe, Tommy John type surgery on his elbow. Didn't realize that until I saw him @ the coin flip for the B10 championship game.

I heard somewhere that Colin Cowherd and Paul Finebaum are on the NCAA committee that decides these medical hardship cases so we should be good.
