Bonus points for the driver having the last name "Slaughter"
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The driver of a car who hit and killed a teenager on Jacksonville's Northside tweeted about the accident just after it happened.
Trevius Williams, 16, died after being hit by a car as he was crossing the street around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Police have identified the driver as 19-year-old Keenan Mikel Slaughter. Shortly after the accident, Slaughter tweeted a photo of Williams' body and wrote, "I jus killed a man." The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office confirmed that the tweet came from the driver.
Police say the driver cooperated with police and has not been charged with a crime.
"There are a lot of issues that get folded up into this one act," said Jeffrey Goldhagen, Chief of Pediatrics at University of Florida Health.
Goldhagen said posting the shocking tweets suggests nothing more than the not-uncommon impulsive acts of a teenage boy.
"We see this type of behavior, risk taking behavior, behavior that results in impulsive acts so I would put this in that same category," Goldhagen said.
Williams' mother, Connie Coles, says she can't understand why the man who hit and killed her son has not been arrested and charged with his death.
Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesperson Melissa Bujeda says the investigation into Williams' death is ongoing.
Hours before the accident, the 19-year-old driver sent out a tweet that read: "I drunk so much ** lean I feel like I'm off a NyQuil."
"I'm angry because detectives told me that there's no alcohol or drugs involved," said Coles. "Well how would you know if he wasn't tested?"
Bujeda said the words Slaughter tweeted are song lyrics. The driver was not tested for drugs or alcohol at the scene. According to police, there were no signs of impairment and he cooperated with officers.
Still, it doesn't sit well with Coles, a mother of three, who on her middle's child's 22nd birthday, had to break the news that her youngest son was dead.
"He'll never see his brother again," said Coles. "None of us will once we lay him to rest. I don't even want to go back home. I don't want to think about having to pack up his clothes. I have to give away his shoes. My son is never coming back."
